Dave, did you take the pics on the Broomefire website? Got my "little" bro, 35 Capt. in pic #8.

2nd degree burns to hand, wrist, and forearm. Burns apparently covered the entire hand and wrist area (circumfrencial [sp?]).

From today's (3/12) Times Herald Record Firefighters' expo to raise money for anniversary fests MIDDLETOWN - The Middletown Fire Department is hosting a Fire Expo on Friday and Saturday at the Orange County Fairgrounds. The expo is a fundraiser for the Fire Department's 150th anniversary celebrations. The expo, will feature about 60 vendors of fire equipment and apparatus, and the deputy fire chief, Kevin Duggan, anticipates 1,500-2,000 firefighters will attend. Another graduate of a 7 day CDL school. Maybe he used to drive for Sure Wish I'd Finished Training.

We go to the Thruway often. We go through the toll plaza. We don't use crash gates. We don't have EZ-Pass and we don't pay tolls.

I did a quick look at Ebay, and there were some similar ones that were reportedly from the 1970's.

I believe that at one time (around the beginning of 911) Orange County wanted to renumber apparatus but the districts balked at this. For those around us in more modern times, OC uses a 3 digit number starting with the Battalion # (1-9). Each District is given a set of numbers. They can use the number for anything, rescue, engine, tanker, etc. The problem with this is that you are limited to those numbers. If you run out of numbers, what then? Our district is facing this now as the number of pieces of equipment have out-numbered our supply of numbers.

Kind of reminds me of the saying, "I love my country, but I fear my government." And for those who say you have nothing to fear, the quote "You can trust the government, just ask any Indian" (i.e. Native American for you PC type).

And even if CT could pull it off and consolidate services, it would still take another 80 years to see improvement in NY. Unless of course there was a way that they could do it and still maintain #1 tax status. I've believed for years that NY, CT, and NJ are having a contest to see who can have the highest taxes and they do whatever they can to be #1.

In looking at Civil Service exam announcements, I always see the question "Are you an Exempt Fireman?" What, exactly, is an exempt fireman? Exempt from what?
-
I know when I took EVOC, it gives you some of the minimal basic info. The only way to really know how to handle that apparatus is to drive it. Take it to a large open area and see what it will do or not do. Under close, well-trained supervision of course. I would like to see driving simulators for apparatus. When I worked EMS, one of the things that scared me the most was these "kids" who never drove anything bigger than their Honda Accord getting behind the wheel of a type 3, or a top heavy van and screaming down the road lights and sirens. And the road check would undoubtedly be both. Max BAC for a CDL driver, in any type of vehicle, I believe is .02.

Tank (N) Endorsement would be required for any permenently mounted cargo tank with a capacity of 119 gallons or more.
-
Most would require a Class B CDL. You would also have to pass the air brake portion of the test as well as have the tanker endorsement. Class A if you tow a trailer with a manufacturers gross weight rating of 10,000 lbs or more. Also, if you still have any apparatus with manual transmissions, you would have to take your road test on them. If you take the road test on a CMV with an automatic transmission, you will be restricted to automatic only. Class C if the gross weight is under 26,000 but over 18,000 (I think). Cost $$$$$. When I renewed my license two years ago, it was $130 for the license and $153 for the haz-mat endorsement. BTW, once you have your CDL, you are subject to a whole new set of rules and regulations that apply to your POV as well.

Oh goody! Now will the respective fire depts/districts be expected to cough up the money to pay for this or the individual wishing to be a driver? Just because someone has a CDL doesn't make them a truck driver. Just gives them permission to be a steering wheel holder. I can see it now, a whole line of fire apparatus out of service at a DOT check on the Thruway on the way to or from the Hudson Valley parade. Wake up! These types of laws have little-to-nothing to do with safety/security and everything to do with revenue enhancement.

Unchambered ammunition is no more dangerous in a fire than any of the other hazards you might face. Actually, probably less so. Bullets are not flying around as depicted in the movies. One study, which I will see if I can find and post, showed that ammunition stored in cardboard boxes, exposed to fire conditions, did not leave the container. Ammunition that is in the chamber of a firearm, however, is dangerous if exposed to fire conditions as it will act like it is supposed to. That is, to exit the muzzle with high velocity.

Are the shifts 8 or 12 hrs or something different? How much is the shift diff?

After posting on here for a while, I have become my own word police. Instead of "exam announcements", it should have been "exam applications".
-
Before the word police correct me, that should read "Exempt Firefighter ". Thanks for the answers.

I checked with HVPS/Regional EMS today and was told not to expect anything for 6-8 weeks.

I stand corrected. Thank you for bringing the error to my attention.

Not at all. I personally don't have a problem with it. ONE rear facing blue light is permitted by law on police cars in NY. What I have a problem with is the "do as I say, not as I do" attitude of most law enforcement personnel. You know them, the cell phone talking, no seat belt wearing, speeding because they can, police officers. When I was an MP, we were held to a higher standard under the theory that in order to properly enforce the law, we should set the example and obey the law ourselves.
-
You mean like the multiple blue lights on the rear of a police car or even some front facing blue lights on police cars or the blinding lights (red, white, and amber) on the HELP trucks that are so bright you can't see anything when approaching them from the rear?

Cable 6 news reported tonight that the accident occured when the other driver lost control due to excessive speed and bald tires. He apparently spun and ended up across the road just moments before the officer came down the road. He was also apparently driving with a suspended or revoked license and not wearing a seatbelt.
