Anyone hear of Ferrara winnning bids to supply FDNY with Engines and Tower Ladders?
-
Maybe the FDNY or FDNY Fire Alarm Dispatchers can give them some bonus points if they take those tests in the future.....
-
I think thats what they are doing.......trying to solve the problem...and before hiring career guys see if they can attract or retain the volunteers with an incentive...if it does not work then by all means bring in the career guys as you say...one step at a time.

Yes Rockland has a few...Haverstraw still has them as well. In Nyack when the box is pulled the horns and sirens sound in town.....at Empire I think the box # is sounded by the old bell still on top of the firehouse...is this correct??? The bell and tape punches in all the firehouses still...now thats old school !!!

Can someone list the Departments who had gamewell or similar street alarm boxes in service in their districts. Also are there any still in use in Westchester? (Mamoroneck village maybe? ) Thanks be safe.......

it's like the quantum squared off....... and I can see those mirrors getting bent, shifted and knocked off by the tree branches in the back streets....what are they thinking with those things!!! Side view mirrors work fine where they are.

Nassau?

At first I hated them...but then after time....I strated to like them just for being different.......years ago each manufacturer had a distinct look it seemed....now adays most are just square cabs.....the grilles and warning lights are really the only things different....to the average person they all look the same...except for the paint....so for that reason I have grown to somewhat like them......also it kind of reminds me of what a Young crusader "6" would have evolved into if they were still in business...........

Not to stir it up but to make a point, the rig in question is an 80's truck with a larger tail board, built to ride on......anyway...... Like all the older guys here we all did it, even put gear on while riding crazy like that, but then again thats the way we were brought up, and at the time I felt comfortable doing it. I have to be honest and say not to long ago we did this for some other reason (riding the side and ladder bed) and I remeber thinking to myself, woah I DON"T feel to comfortable doing this any more, and hung on a lot tighter then I ever had.......it was not to far but I did think of it...was it stupid YES. It would take another paragragh to explain why it was done (not to an alarm), at the very least the OIC did not allow any of the younger members who had never done this before to do it....again IM NOT SAYING IT WAS RIGHT......but it happened.

I think the topic started off on a bad note...with the word hazing, maybe just asking if anybody had any funny pranks pulled on probies it would not have started with all that legal mumbo jumbo, I think most of the older guys here 20+ years all agree with what was stated many times here....if you have thin skin a firehouse, a REAL firehouse is not for you......times change I know, and I see it in my firehouse....unless you were brought up around the firehouse, and see what goes on, sometimes you get attitudes from guys when they have to mop up and sweep up before they can sit down. New guys "tend" bar...meaning get behind the bar and serve drinks or whatever (soda coffee..I hope this does not start a "bar" thing) But you get my meaning. We sit new guys down and explain to them whats going to happen, and if they have thin skin and want to throw down and fight becasue of it then move on. In my years I have seen some wild stuff, and myself was the only "young" kid in my company for about 2 years till we started getting younger. I put up with some crazy stuff...but again nothing to make me want to get a lawyer and sue COME ON, boy have times changed, but again I was around this prior to joining and feel it made me a stronger person and view things a different way. Most younger kids never had any military experience, I didnt as well, but my Capt. at the time was an ex. Marine....to many traditions are being attacked...sorry for my ramble and rant...but, I think the meaning of the thread has turned into some legal crap.

Not to stir it up but...how about riding the back step in a funeral procession? This is done many times.......
-
It 's even cheaper if a few Dept.s get together and order on state bid...
-
On Long Island Dept.s that dispatch themselves have 1 person working.....some places have whats called a deadman, it's a buzzer that goes off every hour....the dispatcher on duty has to push the button to recycle it....if he does not......the phone starts to ring....then a loud alarm in the office sounds...then the tones are transmitted over the radios and in some places the audibles sound......at this point the dept. is responding to qtrs. and the chiefs and/or commisioners calling the office and responding to the office. Also if someone is asleep in between the hour...and the alarm phone rings, if it is not picked up in 6 rings or so, the same series of events happens also the alarm line rolls over to the county dispatch center which will then take the alarm and tone out the call. This has happened before.

And in case some of you guys don't know all Fire related magazine subscriptions can be tax write offs........I get them all, and x635 is right Fire Apparatus Journal is the best buff magazine. One of a kind.

Here is a true story from years ago, whenever this subject is brought up I use this example of it being a bad idea to bring your own vehicle anywhere near the fire scene.........one snowy winter night a Dept. near me who runs 1 or 2 guys in the rig and everyone else storms the scene in their own cars had a working house fire, ripping, now picture a residential side street after a good snowfall....if a plow gets down the street once or twice it's alot, in this particular case the plow did make it down the street, but because of the snowbanks caused by the plow the width of the street was even smaller then normal. The rigs getting to the scene made it in ok, and even the mutual aide. But when the utility gas and electric made it to the scene about an hour later, between all the members cars and buffs they could not make it anywhere near the scene. It was that congested. They needed to get the electric truck closer to the scene so 3 or 4 members had to move their cars, what a mess it was...backing out, getting stuck, having to help push 1 car that got stuck spinning the wheels, now of course this is a worst case example but it shows what can happen.

Time and time again you hear of these type of stories, you would think the dispatchers involved would think of these incidents and send someone....now I can see how it can get "routine" when you think of the 1000's and 1000's of calls that each dispatcher handles in a year at a busy center, and maybe can get careless or lazy...but thats where a really good dispatcher or supervisor rises above the rest and will take action, maybe even thinking of one of these times as his/her motivation to take action.........in Nassau we have a similar policy as Rockland even 911 hang ups get a squad car to check. I look at it as a game of hot potato...you do not want to be the one holding the potato so to speak....the chain of events should never end at the dispatch center whats that old saying...when in doubt blow em' out?
