EFDCapt115...you are right I should not have used the word hate. I am not saying staffing issues are not a problem. Consolidation and automatic mutual aid is the answer for many departments in this day and age. I agree with all this. As far as "calling out", I am sorry for derailing this topic. I was only replying with my feelings, towards a series of posts made awhile back, by the individual who offered up a "challenge" to anyone who felt he was not a friend of the volunteer fire service. Those are my feelings. I feel he has made many many posts in the past that are truly "mean spirited", taking a dig whenever he can besides trying to just make a point. And I know all about the qtip crap, he issued the "challenge". I accepted. We will agree to disagree in the end I'm sure.

I'll take your challenge Chief Flynn. I do not think you are a friend of the volunteer fire service. Nor do I think you truly believe in the "Brotherhood" that is suppose to exsist between all firefighters in this country and around the world for that matter. I'm sure that when you meet a firefighter and find out he is a volunteer you think of him on a different level. What makes me think this is true was due to a series of posts you made a few years back.... where you said something to the effect of "volunteer firefighters are not the same as career firefighters, save all the that talk for your wives and girlfreinds who will believe it" Again not exact but something along those lines. There may be some differences between the 2, but when firefighters respond to a working fire and the crews are stretching lines, throwing ladders making the push with the line to put the fire out WE ARE THE SAME. DOING THE SAME JOB at that point. The meat and potatoes of a firefighters job is the same volunteer or career. You still refused to hear that and made posts against anyone trying to suggest this was the case. Those posts were filled with an underlying hate and despise for the volunteer fire service. Maybe you were having a really bad day and those post were an impulsive error in judgement. I really hope so.

If the Somers FD dispatch procedure for a co alarm calls for a Chief only then they "covered" the alarm. If the response procedure calls for an single Engine or Ladder response or a "general" alarm, then I dont think this could be considered a "covered" alarm. If they were on scene over an hour then they were using fans and venting the structure while searching for the source. A Chief response would not cover this task.

$50 for the whole set? Thats a great deal. I have seen #1 go for as much as $200. I'm only missing Volume 3 #1 from 86. Keep missing it when it comes up on EBay.

There are a few things as a Fire Chief you simply cannot condone, nor try to defend. Alcohol in the firehouse is one of them. The troops should also know you cannot go to "bat" for them on this one. Let it go, and go along with whatever rules will be in effect. There are enough problems and headaches you will need to deal with without the 3 am phone call from the dispatcher looking for a Chief to call them because the Father of one of your 18 year old members wants to know why he came home from the firehouse drunk at 2:45am.

Thank you Cap. Your many posts about the ISO over the last year or so came in handy. Two thumbs up! Thanks again and Be Safe.
-
We just finished a review from ISO 2 months ago. We went from a 4 rating to a 2. Anyone with questions on what went on can send me a PM. One thing I can say is if your Dept. is not good at keeping records..on everything your going to have a real hard time.

Nassau County hears fire 16 5x5 on 46.20.

ok thanks for the info!

I to searched it out to add a new post on it. I think all threads should stay open, unless there is a technical issue behind why it cnt remain open. I posted a thread on this in the EMTBravo section. Anyway Good Job 58 on the transport of the rigs to Orange County!

There were a few old threads I searched out to post on in recent days but discovered that they were closed to new postings. ( Port Chester 's old Mack CF for one) What is the harm in keeping them open. Rather then start a topic up again you can just add to something that has already been discussed at various degrees, or mods can redirect your topic to an older thread to add upon if one is out there. Im on a few sites and sometimes revisit a thread I may have started years ago to see if there were any updates or changes in what was discussed. Just a thought. keep up the good work and be SAFE ALL!

This is a problem that happens whenever you try and "force" a system where a single call taker will answer for all 3 agencies Police, EMS and Fire. Fire is usually the last one added into this group and is given the least traininig. Think about this..in most cases, not all, but in many cases Fire and EMS emergencies are happening in the "now", maybe 90% of all calls. "My house is on fire", "my car is on fire", "something just blew up", "my co-worker just colapsed", "I cant breath" and so on..... On the other hand most Police emergencies have "already happened". "My purse was stolen", "someone just hit my car" "I came home and my house was robbed", and so on. Speed and accuracy is very important to fire and ems calltaking. This skill takes some time to develop. There is an art to just listening. Many callers give you everything you need to dispatch units within the first sentence spoken. As is the case many times the calltakers do not hve the training nor do they understand the differences and nuances of fire dispatching and call taking. I recall a situation in MD I think a few years back where some firefighters were almost killed. When the investigation ended, the calltaker was disciplined because She took to long on the phone call. The neighbor was calling in a working house fire next door to their home. The caller clearly stated their address and thet the house next door was on fire. The calltaker, a PD cross over, started to ask can you get me the house address, what color is the house, what are the owners names, are you sure it is on fire and a host of other non important information needed to dispatch the FD. She did not have the proper training or knowledge in FD call taking. FDNY dispatch is a great organization with a long history. It's a shame this situation is giving them an unwanted black eye at times.

More fire duty then the entire Yonkers FD doubt it, more then some YFD companies, thats possible. Hempstead has 17 transmitted working fires so far this year. Worker gets retransmitted and a FAST to the scene. They always rank #1 in workers each year in Nassau County. The last 15 years a low of 20 in 2003 and a high of 42 in 2008.

Garden City is a combo Dept. Mostly Volunteer. Also to note the career men DO NOT leave the district. Mutual aide is handled by the volunteers with the spare tower ladder or engine, whatever is called for. In this case the tower ladder responded on the 3rd alarm to standby, then was relocated to the scene.

The truth about unions were that no one gave a crap about them and the blue collar civil service jobs for the most part because the pay was not great. Paid medical and pensions were the lure and appeal to get people to take these jobs. They were and are for the most part secure ways to make a living. Years later the pay has now risen to a decent level. But now that the White collar workers world has been downsized the last decade are now looking over the fence at their Blue Collar neighbor who, if escapes layoffs, has a pretty secure future. They have to blame someone for this, and the politicians are jumping on the bandwagon looking to blame the unions for all the financial woes of this country. By the way Unions were created to protect the average worker from the White collar owner who did not give a crap about them but would enjoy the fruit of their labor. Whats the truth Bro please do tell us.

Now...did FDNY rate lower when the Fire Patrol was in service? I know they were not part of the FDNY, but would they have been rated as part of the total ISO grade? Thanks for the info.
-
Thanks for the info..very interesting the whole ISO concept. I read somewhere that some states and insurance companies are not using the ISO grade anymore and are going to a fire loss per zip code to make rates. Any info on this?

An Ex Chief from my Dept and retired City firefighter told me a few stories about a detail He did there years ago. He got to the station and noticed they were 1 man short for the ladder. He started to ask around and the other guys told him "no we are good, Fred (forgot the name He told me) is working" He then let it go but half way through the shift He asked again who and where was Fred. They told him Fred lived across the street. He then asked how do you know he's working? They then told him look across the street. See the front porch, well look by the stairs...there was his boots and gear. When there was a run he would hear the bells or they would honk the horn and this old timer would come out for the call. He was like the senior guy in the house and never really stayed at the firehouse! Another story was that years and years ago the bridge operator would ring the firehouse when He would see a Chief come across the bridge, giving them a heads up. Good stuff.
