I would just like to see more then FFI's 78 hour class as the requirement to be an interior firefighter in New York State. It is not sufficient. (Granted some departments require more) but New York state should require more lets face it were loosing about 90 to 100 firefighters a year both career and volunteer country wide that is unacceptable. career and volunteers both need to have a minimum physical standard there are a lot of guys walking around that are potential heart problems or even worse, so lets get a medical and physical standard that must be met by both career and volunteer every year. (Also many depts. have medical exams yearly but some don’t, let’s enforce it.) Let’s get a CPAT or agility of some sort this is all aimed at our safety of both u and me and those we will be going to emergencies along side. Let’s get more then 78 hours to be interior as a volunteer, require FF2. Require survival, require agility, and if u can’t pass the agility and be a volunteer then be fire police or a pump operator or EMS not every one needs to be interior. develop a continuing education program require FF1 and FF2 and survival to be interior then have some sort of rule that requires like one or 2 additional classes a year of the volunteers granted its not their job but spacing it out over time should help fit peoples schedule say maybe truck ops and building construction in year two and so on it will add up in due time and be something more then this state has now. 78 hours doesn't make you qualified... I am sorry and you all know there are many people who this FF1 class is their 1st last and only, and this is all meant as no disrespect to those who do more, because there are plenty on each side that continue taking classes. lastly the WCFTC runs a 2 week FF1 for college kids great its a great idea and helps fit their schedule but 10 days and your a interior FF who may end up on a engine 3 days after finishing this class maybe along side a senior guy who is the MPO and maybe one other younger member who took this class 3 days ago with you are you really ready for that? A crash course of 10 days isn’t enough and no dept should sign you off as interior after only that... lets all get better standards state wide its for your safety..... i would like to hear any reasons that can make a argument saying that 78 hour FF1 is enough..

"WESTCHESTER EMERGENCY VOLUNTEER RESERVES-MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS (WEVR-MRC) The Volunteer Center, in coordination with Westchester County’s Department of Emergency Services, is recruiting and training volunteers in emergency preparedness and response. These volunteers may be called into action should a large-scale disaster or public health emergency occur in Westchester. Training volunteers and coordinating the response effort before a disaster occurs will result in a safer and more efficient response. Anyone age 18 or older who is a resident of Westchester County can apply to join WEVR-MRC. Volunteers receive free training (6 hours of in-class training and 10 hours of on-line training) in emergency preparedness and response including Disaster Preparedness, Fire Safety, Fire Suppression, Overview of Terrorism, The Incident Command System, Light Search and Rescue, Isolation and Quarantine, Inoculation Procedures, and Overview of Smallpox. " as per DES website any one know if this is related to the old CERT eams..

Yes it was Hartsdale Eng 170, Fairview Eng 175, White Plains Eng 66, L-32, and Scarsdale Tl-29 training with FDNY Eng 72/ sat-2, Eng 89, and TL-50 at their quarters and at the Whitestone movie theater, along with field comm. and county car 2. this was part of a large Westchester / FDNY drill on relocations and various hydrants, standpipes, box alarms ,adapters, how the city operates, this was designed to help prepare interoperability incase of another large scale incident that requires Westchester County Units to relocate to FDNY. Also note that Greenville Eng 150, Eastchester Eng 31, Yonkers engine and truck spares i believe and Mt. Vernon Truck 1 (the new tower) were operating in the Bronx with other companies.

what if you have mutiple ems calls do you take mutiple engines out of service? is there a limit to what point the engine would role instead of the utility? and if there is a structural call in that utilites 1st due area there must be a delay in having to clear the scene return to quarters and respond or send the next closest company? just wondering how it works. it seems mabe there are advantages and disadvanages but could work in some areas depending on staffing and the size of the responce area.

the working end of tools should be kept clean, free of rust and not painted. painting hides any defects or normal visable damage. refer to your essentials book with regards to varrious care of hand tools.

Best advice is take classes now as a volunteer learn as much as you can. and if your not 18 once you are start taking all the tests, Westchester towns n villages will be this spring, look for Yonkers Mt Vernon, white plains New Ro and even look at the Ct jobs take them all regardless of residency you may not get hired but you will get a lot of test taking experience and probably score better each time as you become more comfortable with the tests and the types of questions asked. Also note I know many of those cities I just mentioned tests were just given but the point is take everything and anything even the PD test or dispatching tests they all are based upon the same principles.

I really don't care to get involved in the argument but I do want to ask all of you so far who have express opinions the following questions. How do you decide which volunteers get the housing? How cheap is it? How do they keep it what if they leave the Dept. or what if the 20 year old kid who gets the cheaper house or tax break now is out of college working full time and can’t meet the minimum number of calls or drills? Do you kick them out? Just how much cheaper can you make it? Houses around here cost anywhere from 450,000 up to over 900,000, There are also depts. that have affordable housing with members who live there and are making a pretty decent amount of money will the member’s income be evaluated every year and if they make to much they are out? The point is once you start giving these incentives there are a lot of rules to work out. Maybe a minimum number of years with the dept to prevent people who just want a tax break or a cheaper house.. A lot to consider I would like to here some suggestions on these. caz there is no way every one can get cheaper housing

Thank you ALS and great point mabe some FD's need to look at The St. Louis Fire Department (SLFD). "(SLFD) has implemented the quiet dispatch (responding with no lights or sirens) for the following incidents: automatic alarms, sprinkler alarms, natural gas leaks, wires down, calls for manpower, flush jobs, lockouts, carbon monoxide detector alarms, rubbish, weeds, and dumpster fires. If a call is dispatched as a quiet response and Central Dispatch receives additional information indicating that life is in danger, persons are injured, or there is a working fire, dispatch will upgrade the call to "urgent" and the responding apparatus’ lights and sirens will be activated. Since SLFD has implemented the silent alarm policy for non-emergency response, the department has reduced the number of intersection vehicle crashes greatly." while this sort of dispatch needs to be relative to the nature of the alarm and staffing on the apparatus its something to explore maybe send the 1st due in a responce mode and all other units non-emergency. espically because isn;t purchase Fd under a mile down andersonhill road from SUNY Purchase.

1st of all no where did I take a side or make a statement about that topic all agencies evaluate them selves and the bottom line is as I said they are currently handling the calls them selves. secondly as a chief you set the policy for your department so if you’re not getting the alarms that’s a problem and your responsibility to correct. (also Fact) "In the past, whenever an alarm went off, campus police would check it out first, then call us if it turned out to be a real fire," That is a major hazard to the students that go there due to the delay, if it is a real fire, that gives a fire precious time to extend. also as I stated purchase "response numbers and times where they are now with a 4 minute response time are, ok as is now but one never knows what the future entails." this is a compliment to these men and women so don’t read any where into me taking one side or another. Also as stated before the media twist words and yes this article seems to show a concerned chief worried about his depts. future ability to respond if the alarm numbers continue and I merely stated a few options. No where did that take a side and I believe your remarks were uncalled for... the check and advise B.S. has to go... that was my main point along with learning from Automatic alarms.... also "Yes, the local volunteer Chief recognizes this will strain his dept somewhat, but he also said that they'll readily adapt." as u said adapt that means changes maybe a SUNY FD... some colleges have them volunteers who are in college and live at the station and are given free board in order to respond when not in class.. All available options... no where did any one get bashed your all a little too jumpy and jump to conclusion. I my self having been a volunteer for many years know what its all about so it is perfectly justifiable to say "regardless of how may times the alarm comes in that is your job (to respond) you choose to be a firefighter whether your career or volunteer you have made a commitment to your community to be a firefighter and have taken a oath of your free will, that is fact....." NO Where does this Take a side….
-
there should be no check and advise you should receive all fire alarms in your response area and respond regardless of how may times the alarm comes in that is your job that you choose whether your career or volunteer you have made a commitment to your community to be a firefighter. Departments should want to do as many runs a year as they can, and the more runs you do the better you justify the tax revenue and or donations you receive. What ever way you interpret the quote of the chief is one thing the bottom line is the media often twist words so who knows what he really said. yes it did sound like they don’t want to go on all these B.S. alarms but that is what the fire departments job is its not the job of the cops to check and advise they should provide scene safety and stay out of the buildings not run in to check something and become a 2nd victim due to being unequipped to handle a fire. if the call volume keeps going up maybe purchase will need to hire career drivers or paid on call members to keep the response numbers and times where they are it seems with a 4 minute response time to be ok as is now but one never knows what the future entails. Also maybe suny as a state school needs to look into its own fire dept even just an engine staffed with 3 or 4 men 24-7 to respond initially and purchase can supplement and support them. This is not any attempt to start an argument it looks at both sides and says keep up the work keep responding those automatic alarms helps you learn the buildings and the knowledge of the layouts and other lessons learned help you to be more prepared for the real thing. The bottom line is when the alarms go off no matter what it’s our jobs to go check them out and be professional every time.
