  1. Yes... Hartsdale ordered a 4 Guys 2000 GPM pumper they from what i am told the are a good solid company thats been around awhile although not suppling many apparatus to this area. i hear they are very willing to work with a department when working on spec's and having been in and around their rigs at varrious trade shows it seems to be a good product.. but the best way to get that info would be some one who already has one or see how ours works out for us. Note this engine is replacing a 30 year old engine... also yes i do believe they will be the 1st 4 guys rigs in westchester county. Homer J. Knows Best...
  2. Attack with in 2 minutes off arrival shouldn't be an issue you should arrive in full PPE with SCBA all u need to do is pull a line and flake out the kinks and mask up. I have seen 2 FF's accomplish this in less then 2 minutes and is defiantly attainable. Most rigs have 500 gallons or more that is immediately available that in most cases when response times are low should allow for quick knock downs with just tank water. If you read on 4.2.2.3 initial attack can and begin immediately upon arrival when there is life hazard or the risk of serious injury that can be prevented. This must be in accordance with NFPA 1500. Lets face it common sense is if you pull up and people are trapped putting a line in operation immediately between the trapped persons and the fire could save their lives nothing leads to improved interior conditions then a quick effective knock down of the fire.

  7. My question based on a recent hospital fire seeing that 2 m/a Departments sent all 3 chiefs officers to this incident. Is do any departments have any rules on all 3 chief officers responding out of their district? I mean granted any one could just clear and respond from a further distance, but why would you want or allow all 3 Chiefs out of your district thus leaving less man power (due to a rig and man power with the rig and the chiefs out of town) and no Chief officer at home to protect your own 1st due should something arise. This is in no way to insult any dept after all each has reasoning behind what is done. It is merely to examine an incident that may happen any where....
  8. Once again I stated that it meant no offense to any department... 2ndly this happens many times and many places so don't look to get defensive this is not the only incident where it has happened. (also I was not there I don't know who was there, but as the IA says maybe they were, maybe they were not at this incident, the bottom line is it happens, the point is not to pick on this incident its a general fact that does happen a lot of places) I have seen it happen and will continue the bottom line is protect your citizens first don’t put them at risk for every one to run off to a fire, I know we all want to go but some one needs to stay back and protect the district. Lastly I would like to see people not get defensive.. look at a topic that we all know does happen and try to learn from it... no one seeks to attack any department because hell we all have our short comings, but you can try to learn from facts to better us all
  9. good point, sounds like Prince George County MD..... they seam very far ahead when it comes to something so basic i usually hear Elmsford Fd do this but thats about it... it would be nice to see Westchester County have all rigs report their staffing when responding, this is so a understaffed unit can be supplimented by adding an additional engine or truck, due to the under staffed company just as they do down south... also only interior FF's should count as staffing every one else is just support...
  10. Rockland County Fire Training Center has one...
  11. a member of NHFD told me probably 20 openings for seen as soon as the list is established. apparently they are working short that many FF's

  14. just a side note codes in the academy is only 2 days so about 14-16 hours and counts for nothing to be a code enforcement official its 6 class 3 days each 8 hours a day.. Also there is code compliance tech which is what is required to do fire inspections or inspections of existing structures which is 3 classes 3 days each 8 hours a day The academy codes is basic and only counts for the state requirement of 229 hours even though most academies are over 400 hours of training.
  15. all great classes i agree with GFD538, Rescue Tech Basic is also pretty good but only after all those listed above are done... also look at hazmat tech or decon... Also certain counties give Fire attack 1 and Fire attack 2 still both are good with regards to the types on nozzles, various flows as well as GPM.. It helps you understand how your nozzle choice affects you as a nozzle men or pump operator. Also provides a lot more work with handling hand lines and advancing and stretching hand lines.. I feel this is very important in the fire service and nothing helps to stabilize an incident more then a well placed hand line…
  16. It appears those ladders will be a little harder to deploy with one person rather then the normal ladders that are stored on top of the rig and drop down to a horizontal position. They also when being deployed go up on the top side higher then the rig it self so you have to watch out for over head wires. other then that general observation looks like a nice rig. best of luck with it.
  17. I think Homer J. put it best well though out and written reply. I totally agree 78 hour isn't sufficient. More detailed instruction on building construction, search and rescue, stretching of hose lines and probably some basic thermal imaging as well as survival should be included. The hour or so spent or cutting roofs or search's isn't sufficient. Trust me as some one who took the classes before attending the career academy it’s much different and you learn and cover so much more information and skills. the bottom line is were all going into the same burning buildings and in some cases together so why should they guy next to you have any less training. I know I would want they guy next me to be equal or have even more training. "Question? How many departments allow their "newly trained" FF1 Probie into a working fire?" The answer is some do... and they should be eased into things not thrown into an out of control fire. I have seen and heard from friends who’s departments roll a engine with all probies fresh out of FF1 or in some cases just to get a rig out 1 interior FF who is the chauffeur and the rest exterior FF's that is unacceptable what if you pull up to a job, the crew and engine is useless. "Do departments require their probie to stay out of "working" jobs or are they allowed to follow a more "qualified"(aka senior, trained, experienced) firefighter in? Or are they allowed in on overhaul only?" Over hawl only is not a bad intro as is a secondary search. and pairing up with a more senior member is a very good idea. new personal can learn a lot from their senior members and should try to follow them closely.. Also hopefully this member has experience and more then just FF1. "And even if you take all the training you can, let's be honest it does not make you immediately the most qualified or better person. On paper it may appear that way, but how much of your training did you retain and did you take too much too fast and had no idea what the instructor was talking about because you had never experienced any situation that was discussed." also true, but the bottom line is the more live burn time, the more instruction the more hands on practice the better you should be. Granted nothing is better then real life fire experience but the more and more training and drilling is the next best thing because after all you can schedule the real thing... the main goal of all this isn't to make getting members harder its to keep more firefighters safer we can't continue to kill over 100 firefighters a year... training for both career and volunteer doesn’t end after FF1 or the Career academy it continues over your fire service career. * note I also stated in a previous discussion on this topic that maybe some sort of continuing education program be established where you take FF1 and then survival and FF2 in some sort of spread out but yet scheduled time frame and require certain classes over a period of time to gain interior status. Similar to how the state gives their building code classes it’s 6 classes 3 days each but when you sign up for one you’re registered into the next 5 as well. Its 3 days 8 hours a day once a month.. So 18 days over a 6 month period totaling 144 hours... now maybe that could be edited some how for the fire service...

  19. Not totally Correct. Yonkers FD has a Hazmat Team, Montrose VA has a Hazmat team as well as Westchester County Has 6 Squad Companies that are assigned Hazmat trailers amoung the other roles that these Squads play. the trailers contain varrious amounts of equipment including meters, suits, computers, decon, sensors and so on. Mabe some on has a full inventory of theirs. SQ1- Yonkers SQ2- New Ro SQ3- FDMV SQ4- White Plains SQ5- Scarsdale/ Eastchester SQ6- Fairview/Greenville/Hartsdale SQ7-will be goin to Mohegan i don;t know if they have it yet. There are also mass decon trailers that are being assigned if not already to Port chester Katonah/Bedford Cortland

  24. The back side of the axe, a sledge and a pitch fork or work, the 1st 2 means require a lot of energy to smash or break the slate shingles. I found it much easier that day to use a haligan, a pitch fork or even a pike pole. take the tool and slide it under the shingles just tapping the back side of the tool or in the case of the other day just pushing it a little was enough force to pull the nails and shingles right off the roof, it was much easier then smashing and required less work while being much quicker especially considering how much of the roof we had to remove that day.
