  1. If you look at JetPhoto's photo it is a great example of what is missing in high school sports and soon to be collegiate. About 2 months ago, or a bit more when it was still snowing out. One of the athletes asks, what is one way outside of the gym to get stronger? I went on to ask him about the rest and recovery he was doing, as well as the fluids and foods he was consuming. After all checked out. I then asked, are you shovelling? He said no, Ok do you rake your yard? Once again no. The remote is replacing the tool, and for younger generations to continue to get stronger, they need a little manual labor in their life. The strongest athletes I have are the ones that also rake, shovel, mow the lawn when needed. Secondly, NSCA which is one of the most respected organizations in the strength and conditioning field, has implemetned a new strength and conditioning certification to improve conditioning for all tactical occupations, such as police, fire, ems and esu. They just had a national conference last week, and from the sound of it, it is progressing well. So, if any one in the exercise science field, who has either a phys. ed, exercise science or exercise physiology degree and a passion for emergency servies, you may want to look into this
  2. Crossfit, In my opinion from a strength and conditioning stand point, coaching at the high school and collegiate level, is a bit out there. It gets results, but not in a strength. The more concerning thing in my opinion to crossfit is the reps per exercise. A common exercise performed in Crossfit is the Olympic Clean. From a strength and conditioning viewpoint, the clean needs to be a dynamic and explosive exercise, focusing on several phases of the lift in order to complete properly, which can take sometime in order to truly understand, and years to master. With the cleans being an explosive exercise the reps should be low anywhere from 1-5, with rest time incorporated accordingly to the workload. Crossfit, combines 12 reps of cleans following 12 pulls ups or muscle ups, and a round of burpees, or any other exercise that you can name. In my opinion again, and other strength and conditioning coaches I work with, is that the programming of crossfit, though great since it is getting people moving and creating a buzz, is flawed since injuries can increase and the values of the individual lifts are missed. Though I am negative about Crossfit, it may serve a purpose with this line of work, high intensity training and round after round, similar to some of the demands in the emergency service field. It also creates team work and togetherness, so there is some great points to crossfit. Just be careful, do what is right for you. And my opinions are from getting atheltes stronger, so my views are a bit different, but hope any information can be helpful.
  3. Crossfit, is more of a team effort. It promotes completing the task and no one is done until the last person is done. You are timed with max reps, workout completion. The team concept I feel is what is the real driving factor behind crossfit.
  4. That sure is a big surprise to come upon.
  5. This topic and new drug was just on this evenings "Spike TV" show "1000 ways to die". Pretty crazy substance
  6. No affiliation either, but why not contact an officer through email? I feel it would be the best way to get your answers

  8. No problem, they did a better job with coverage and information compared to the recent Croton incident
  9. http://www.lohud.com/article/20100816/NEWS04/8160367/Steamroller-breaks-worker-s-leg-in-Mahopac Hopefully that can help
  10. Call was south of the Arcadian Shopping Center, and South of Sparta Cemetery
  11. I will have to agree with Chris, the Pleasantville Vac rehab was excellent, an amazing resource for a day like yesterday. Thank you for being there and very professional and proactive!
  12. NY10570 sounds like a very good rebuttal, because no volley FD pays for alcohol, However, I for one don't think drinking should be an expense for either volunteer or paid. I feel that if we are going to go off topic as you have, that both groups should be held to represent themselves in a positive demeanor and be fit for duty
  13. Saints, but probably will hold with the colts till the 4th quarter, with the Colts winning 41-24
  14. Three separate incidences at work. At my job it is only paid ems in the vicinity, and I had to wait 20 minutes for the ambulance. So it is not a paid vs. vollie thing, it is about public education. Everyone takes the ambulance instead of the cab. It strains every department no matter where ya look
  15. nice truck positioning. thanks for sharing the pics. Very useful
  16. No problem, no feelings hurt. I am sure Bill has a lot of advice and time in the service, which are appreciated. But my comment was made about the positive portrayal of this incident. I even stated that the number of personnel and equipment were high, many others also reelected that fact as well in their posts. So by saying good job and you put an fd in a positive light, it gets a reply of "I hope you never become an officer." So now when it comes time to shut down a fire station, the LAFD has something else to use, positive publicity, which is the only thing I had intentions of stating. I remember when Yonkers were facing cuts, that department does an excellent job in their community, and I remember watching on News12 the numerous citizens of Yonkers, coming out in support of their fire department.
  17. Chris192 summed up more elaborately and better than what I did, but my thoughts were along those lines. " Any advice you have I would love to hear. Thanks for the suggestion! I personally wouldn't have deployed such resources, but who knows maybe that is their SOP's, secondly it was an officer's decision. My main thought is that it shows the kind, human side of fire fighters, instead of a picture of a hose through some saps car since he parked it in front of the hydrant, and than everyone will be complaining about the FD about how thoughtless they were.
  18. Sure the number of personnel and equipment was large, but now look at the publicity and the positive light that the department is portrayed as. It may get a person to may make a donation or so to that department. Good job
  19. Excellent save, and good work Schenectady. I used to work one block over from that street at the local elementary school, tough neighborhood and city, but that fire department is spot on. Training all the time, and you can see how it paid off. Excellent job.
  20. Excellent job Croton Falls, seems like a quick knockdown, and use of the tankers, could you elaborate, on the use of the tankers, since many Northern Communities rely on them. Excellent job.
  21. BNechis: Thanks for the info!
  22. JFlynn I agree that the training differences are there, as I am not part of the Technical Rescue Team, so I am outsider looking in. Do you do in house training as a refresher, as I can imagine some of the calls that you go on would require skills that are similar to those needed for this team on a daily and/or weekly basis. And the academy plus job standard in house training covers much, however, I guess I am asking is how is it handle and some suggestions that you seem fit, that your department does, to improve upon if needed of the technical rescue team. Also I am not aware of the resources of Southern Westchester, but from your post if I am correct, there are district or zone teams? If so do they train often together, and how would they be called upon if such team does exist?
  23. Does New Rochelle have a technical rescue team, and if so how often do they train per month and respond per month? This knowledge could be helpful with developing a protocol for training in the future of this County Team. If New Rochelle does not have a technical rescue team, than what department in the Westchester area, does have it, and is trained more than twice a month with drills and such? This is a good topic and maybe both sides can get answers they would like, as what does the county team consist of, and than how can the team better themselves by following the examples of established staffed technical rescue teams.
  24. Frantic 911 cell call gets no action for 15 minutes as three die in house fire http://www.buffalonews.com/home/story/903742.html This is unfortunate right before the holidays.
