I am originally from the area born and raised on a near by dairy farm myself. I wish they the best of luck in rebuilding.

shadow12083 liked a post in a topic by T. John in Colo. shooting: Police pleaded for ambulances
This event is a reminder of how our jobs as emergency responders is changing. Hats off to all of the responders - police, fire and ems - in Aurora for the courageous acts that day, including that of the dispatchers. I am sure there will be lessons learned from our brother and sister responders that we all can take home. Until such time, I won't comment on the events there but rather some of the lessons we have learned from other events.
Post analysis of the Columbine shooting and other high profile attacks revealed that first responders need to respond and react differently to hostile events. Hence new active shooter policies for police departments (i.e. rapid entry of patrol officers and not waiting for SWAT). One area that has been historically overlooked is how to treat/evacuate a mass number of victims from the "hot" zone. How do you reach and quickly extricate dozens, if not hundreds, of injured victims?
Fire and EMS need to be included as part of a coordinated response to a hostile event. Police quickly become overwhelmed. We (non law-enforcement) have been trained to wait for an "all clear" or to know the scene is completely "safe." Post incident analysis' has showed that this approach doesn't work. In Columbine, victims were bleeding out but were unable to be reached. Realistically, it can take upwards of a few hours for an area to be deemed safe (by our traditional definition).
There are efforts popping up across the county to address this issue. In Minnesota, for example, a program called 3E (3 Echo) is being rolled out that incorporates fire/ems into a coordinated response to a hostile event. The program is based on extensive research of past events both within the United States and across the world, taking best practices deploying in many countries (i.e. Israel) that see active terrorist activity, as well as research coming from the Iraq war. The program integrates police, fire and EMS into a coordinated, initial response with a goal to rapidly treat/evacuate massive numbers of patents within minutes (15-20 minutes or less) of a hostile event. From a fire/EMS perspective, it is a fairly significant shift in the paradigm of waiting blocks away for an "all clear" or for the scene to be 100% "safe." A collaborative approach will allow first responders to evaluate the risk/benefit, realizing that some risk will need to be taken. The key in this program is training, exercise and collaboration between first response agencies prior to an incident happening. Due to the sensitive and mission critical nature of the program, its training and policies, I can't go into much further detail online.
Our jobs are changing. The fire service isn't what it used to be 30-40 years ago. While we can only hope that events such as Columbine, Virginia Tech and now Aurora will not happen in our own community, we cannot ignore the reality that, in 2012, we need to take a better look at how we (police, fire and ems) will respond to a hostile event. Its our job.

From the trailer it looks like another BS show, Can't have a nose cup in the mask it blocks their face, why have rope protection on the hand rail, I know our drivers always yell some motavating comment. Guys with no shirts, drama, BS. They should show what it is really like. Practical jokes off set by conversations on how the city is laying guys off and taking away benifits. I agree bring back emergency.

Here's the deal:
http://www.statesman.com/news/local/current-drought-could-become-worst-ever-state-climatologist-1887398.html
In modern times, this is a potential disaster. Actually, it's currently a disaster, and many disasters waiting to happen.
With all the flooding in the midwest, would it be too wacky to build a water pipeline to Texas? What about a desalinization plant on the Gulf Coast (why are they so expensive, and could the cost be reduced) and water sent to various parts of Texas.
I mean, NY built the Aqeducts from the Catskill's into the City underground in the early 1900's. They built the Alaskan pipeline.
We do have active water conservation iniatives, but those will only go so far....
I hope this lady is wrong.

Some photos from Schoharie...
Fuel tanks that were overturned by the force of the water. This created a serious haz-mat condition that will require long-term remediation.
This is actually a pick-up truck not just a roof that is buried in rock/gravel from the water.
You can see how high the water got above this field. Hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland were destroyed.
Road undermined by the adjacent "creek".
House pushed off its foundation.

Saw it and thought it was a very well put together documentary. With that said I think everyone in their heart wants someone to say that it was something medical that occurred but the facts keep pointing otherwise. Something went very wrong that day and unfortunately the only ones that know what truly happened all perished on that day. The only one is the boy and all he can remember is that she was in some sort of pain. Who knows what actually happened to cause the events that did.
Now in regard to some of the other comments.
1. I love how everyone blames him for taking out lawsuits when he wasn't driving or in the car but yet is getting sued via the "estate" of his deceased wife. He has been found liable in a couple lawsuits already and from what I have read elsewhere and others who stay up on that case...he is flat broke. He is suing the very brother in law whom sued the estate and from what I understand either has won or word is that the lawsuit is going to go through as appropriate. Like him or not he still has his son to care for both physically and emotionally.
2. Some of you say they were trying to "sugar coat" her as a person. How many of you actually knew Diane Schuler personally? If you don't..you can't make any comments on what she was as a person. You want to paint her with a broad brush because of one day that was extremely horrendous. ONe that I have no respect for either...that's fine. But for all extensive purposes she probably was an excellent loving mother who did something unexplainable and extremely grossly negligent in our eyes.
3. If they wanted to the pictures in there..maybe its to remind people that despite the actions that caused the incident..she was a human being in the end, just like the kids who lost their lives way to early and with such loss of potential. How can some of you even say it was in bad taste when persons from your own agencies take pictures of others in similar circumstances. And for what? To keep them on a computer or to show other buffs carnage? Ever watch european and latino news stations, they show much of the same. Don't let your predisposed tight a** puritan american press and censorship guide your feelings. I can see eve worse in make up on CSI or NCIS. Like someone said this was not TV...it was HBO and as with everything else you can just turn the channel. They've showed similar pictures on Dr. Baden's autopsy shows they did of crime scene/environment photos of cases he re-did.
I feel bad for the rest of the family who is left to pick up the pieces following this tragedy. And what the family is doing is an extreme form of denial during the mourning phase. Its sad..but no matter what is sent their way they can't accept what the facts in front of them are. That's their mindset and choice and I'm not going to judge them as I'm not in that situation. I'm sure what they are not letting on is that somewhere in their mind they doubt what their feelings are and I'm sure they are battling the anger they feel with that towards her. That I can understand and have dealt with on a personal level with a loss in my close family. The bottom line is 8 people died in a horrific manner which defies much of the logic we know. But she was also a human who just might not have been all that bad of a person...other then one singular moment in time. One with cost 7 other people their lives and left several families in shambles. That I can't forgive...that I won't forget. But I hope somewhere the kids are rested in peace...and that just perhaps she did enough in her normal life to get there with them when she repents for the actions of that day.

I was very surprised at those close up photos. I have seen it all so it was not that bad for me, except, I did not realize they were that close up. Since her family had a big hand in this show, I am pretty curious on why they would allow or want those photos in it. Seems "odd" to me. Bottom line, no matter why she did it, and I have no thoughts, and I am pretty confident my thoughts are pretty close to the truth, she was driving drunk and high and killed 8 people. 100% to blame, no matter what or how she go to that point.

I didn't see the documentary but the husband's attitude is indicative of what is one of the most prevalent wrongs with society today...the litigious epidemic stemming from the belief that everthing bad that happens to someone is someone else fault. While I wouldn't go so far as to call the wife a murderer, as I highly doubt she intended to do harm, she was clearly and irrevocably impaired by her own doing and therefrore she is at fault...period. But like any sensational case the circling vultures...er lawyers...are after notoriety and big $$$ and are using a family's tragedy to try and cash in on both. Winning a case like this would put a lawyer on the cover of the Law Review (or whatever their trade mag is) and probably Time magazine as well...just think of all the clients one would get then.
For his part the husband is probably self deluded and tired of carrying the burden of being "her" husband so he's after anything to relieve that pressure. Plus like most of his generation he finds it easier and far more palatable to blame others. Personal responsibility is fast becoming an antiquated concept as everything is somebody else fault. Why bother taking responsibility when it can be hoisted onto someone else with the help of a good lawyer and the bleeding heart liberal media.
"Oh boo hoo hoo Jimmy killed his neighbor's entire family because his mommy was mean to him when he was a child" or better yet "let's give this rocket scientist lady $1,000,000 because she spilled hot coffee on herself. Why?...Because it was McDonald's fault for giving her hot coffee without telling her it was hot in the first place" You just can't make this stuff up.
There has been enough pain and anguish for all involved (even the husband) stemming from this tragedy and as far as I'm concerned any attempts to take some kind of cockamamie legal action or make money or fame from it should be squashed immediately by a judge. I hope for all the best for the mother and father of the 3 little ones that perished as they welcome a new child into their lives.
And to Mr. Shuler, your wife killed those kids and herself, now it's time for you to buck up and accept that fact and her guilt and move on.

The documentary offers nothing new - she was intox and high. They sought the opinion of a leading ME and he said the County's coroner's office did everything by the book. The private investigator they hired had the samples re-tested and it was her DNA and the THC and BAC #s came back the same. Rather than accept the facts the Schulers seem to be hell bent on trying to prove that it was a tooth abscess that led to a stroke that lead to her drinking a handle of vodka mistaking it for water.

shadow12083 liked a post in a topic in City of Poughkeepsie from the Hudson River Walkway.
I took this shot of the City of Poughkeepsie this past August from the Hudson River Walkway...... It was taken at dusk just before the walkway closes (Which BTW, also happens to be the optimal time for photography) and I almost didn't finish it... I had a few minutes to go and then I had a less that pleasurable encounter with a NYSPP officer who apparently was having an off day  ......... They put in and make a big deal about all this LED energy efficient lighting and yet the walkway closes at dusk.....Go figure...
I have printed this out on my printer at a size of 24" high by 120" wide and it is highly detailed...... I have a friend who has as a 24" H x ~80" W version and his kids had it framed for him as a Christmas gift.... It now occupies his living room and it looks gorgeous..... I have many other landscape panoramas that I have done and my intent is to try to sell these as a means to pay some of my photography expenses...... Doing the fire photography has put me in the hole as far as expenses go and hopefully I can use photos such as this to offset some of my expenses.....
If you have yet to go to the walkway, you should do it...... It really is a great place to go .....

My comments are not in relation to the reasearch. I caution against advising people to disregard the protocol. It's one thing if you are going to do it your self but there may be some impressionable people on here that can apply your advice in a wrong matter. Plus in any event their treatment was quetioned they are much better off having followed the protocol over advice they recieved on a bulletin board. If you feel strongly make your thoughts know to those who make the protocols.

shadow12083 liked a post in a topic by Stench60 in Looking for info on Vol Fireman's Assoc NYC - 1890's...
Thanks Ang,
To answer your question, the Volunteer Firemen's Assoc. was one of several organizations (Veteran Fireman’s, Exempt Fireman's etc.) made up of former members of the original (pre 1866) Fire Department of the City of New York (solely NY County at that time) who after the establishment of the Metropolitan Fire Department organized themselves into these groups to maintain their social and fraternal ties. This not only included dinners, outings, parades and the like, but also the good and welfare of their old time comrades. This originally bore fruit in the first firmens home located on Staten Island, which was exclusively for former members of NYC.
Eventually it was realized that a statewide home was preferable to one strictly for NYC and FASNY took on the responsibility of establishing and operating a home for indigent volunteer firemen from around the state. Harry Howard (Chief Engineer 1857-1860) aside from being the "Beau Ideal" of the mid-19th century fire service was also a lifelong advocate for the fire service in the State of New York. At the time of FASNY taking on the building of the home in Hudson, Harry Howard donated what for that time was a huge amount of money from his life savings for its construction. Everyone was so appreciative of his donation that to this day the home sits on Harry Howard Ave. in the City of Hudson.

You got my vote, but keep the pressure on your local town board especially when it comes time to get that franchise agreement renewed.
You might want to tell the state about this issue and see if they can do anything. I doubt it they can do anything but it can hurt to make some noise at the state level.
NYS Broadband
I would also run the state broadband test and get yourself listed as not having broadband.
