  2. I think it is when the other guys on the crew or the officer don't think of you as a probie and know you can handle yourself in a variety of situations. You can have all the training in the world but not the brains to act responsibility. For me personally it was when the offices would trust me to get assign tasks done with out having to have someone baby sit me, they trust me to get things done when they tell me to do them. I still have a lot more training to be as knowledgeable as the other guys, but I remember what it was like when I started about three years ago and I think that I have come pretty far in that time.
  3. I have seen in on Channel 10 which for me is the ABC station out of Albany, it was sponsored by the Massachusetts Call/Volunteer Firefighters Association. I think it is a great ad and would love to see one sponsored by FASNY do something like that.

  5. I was wondering for anyone who might be a little bit more experience with this software if you know how to create mailing labels from it. I was going through the options and I could not find a report option to generate mailing labels for everyone in the dept, I might be able to do it by creating some type of custom report. But I was wondering if someone else I run into this problem and solved it? if you did create a custom report for labels would you be willing to share it?
  6. When I try to explain what twitter is I refer them to this video which I think does a good job explaining what it is and how it works.

  9. I am posting this for Jack Papapietro, from the Avon VFD in Avon. CT. I came across him another place on the internet and I thought he had an interesting idea. Plus since the day he is looking to write about was very active for many on this forum due to the ice storm I figure, a few people might have a few stories to share with him. I am looking to put together a 'day in the life' book about volunteer firefighters. I have picked Thursday Dec. 11, 2008. I would like to hear from anyone who had a call that day. What you were doing, where you were when the tone dropped, what the call was and what the assignment was and as detailed account of the call as possible, including time of dispatch. What I am looking to do is to put together a mosaic of volunteer firefighters from across the country -and from across the world as well- on one particular day. I think that, if successful it will show an amazing picture of what we, as volunteer firefighters do on a daily basis. Obviously those calls that are 'dramatic' would be of interest, but many calls that we get daily that are not working fires can still be interesting; MVA's, Search and Rescue, entrapment, false alarms and brush/wildland fires as examples. Successful rescues, resuscitation wins and loses, all the things we see on a daily basis can be included. This is not meant to be a book with all 'happy' endings but should include all that we see and deal with. Also, it isn't just the call, but where you were and what you were doing that is also of interest. I want to show how we as volunteers put our personal life on hold while we respond to calls. If you want to participate, please email me your story at 1jack@drhgon.com. Don't worry about spelling, etc. I will correct as necessary. I will acknowledge all contributions I receive. For those that are selected, I will get in touch with you for more information; to clear up any questions on your contribution and for more information on you. If chosen (and published) each contribution will include your name, town/state, fire department and a short bio (age, sex, years in service, rank, etc) and possibly a picture. Cheers, and stay safe, Jack Papapietro
  10. http://www.dailyfreeman.com/site/news.cfm?...74969&rfi=6 Something I thought interesting from the story is local officials starting to exam mutual aid and question who is the person who decides that.
  11. I don't think they have many contracts left in the Kingston area, Mobile Life has seem to have taken over the areas that use to be covered by Empire.
  12. I like it as a possible future option, at the moment I have benefits with my day job, but with this economy who knows what will happen in the future. I wish there were some more specific details like what the actual cost will be and how does one apply for it.
  13. I will probably be taking firefighter 1 next spring and would like to get a copy of the text that is used. Does any one know is there one book that is used state wide or do instructors pick different text's? and what the title of the book is .
  14. This site goes over some of the history of this email and how it started. http://www.snopes.com/rumors/firemen.asp Last September the US senate did do a National First Responder Appreciation day, but it not a yearly holiday. http://allard.senate.gov/_files/AllardFirs...lution_2007.pdf What is preventing this from happening is all of us, for a holiday to happen all of us in the region and nation wide need to voice this to our elected representatives and let them know we want this.
  15. My understanding is that there is no state law to act, but in some areas there our town laws in regards to duty to act. But if your organization has a duty shift and you our on that assign duty shift you get treated like a commercial provider legally.

  19. Maybe if the college were willing to form a volunteer EMS similar to what Bard College has in place (Bard EMS Site). I am not really sure how well that works out in realty, but in theory I can seeing that help relieve alot burden from the districts. From the college's point of view it would be just like any other extra curricular activity, and give there students a little something to add on to their resume.
  20. With my dept it is usually bunker pants, boots, and gloves. But I personaly would love to see us move to more traditional Wildland PPE, because wearing bunker gear to fight a 15 or 30 acre brush fire tires you our quickly.
  21. Date: 4/12/08 Time: 05:30 Location: Clarks Ln Frequency: 46.460 (Fire Dispatch) Units Operating: Milton, Highland, Marlboro, Esopus (may be a few more, that I didn't catch) Description Of Incident: Structure Fire Writer: shadow12083
  22. Not sure if this has been posed yet, but I saw this today and thought it was the funnies thing I ever heard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EykZnm_VgU
  23. I found these picture of a student fire dept at Bard College that I thought was interesting, the site describe the collection with the following statement. "The photographs in this collection document the existence of a student-run volunteer fire department at Bard College. Initially organized in 1942, the Bard College Fire Brigade (later called simply the Bard College Fire Department) became a central campus organization when founder George Blackstone returned from military service in 1946. Intended to protect the Bard community and to provide student members with fire fighting skills, the company fought fires as far away as Rhinecliff and Clermont during its active years. As years passed, however, leadership faltered. Suffering from lack of funds and dwindling membership, President Kline closed the department on May 3, 1960. 24. I am not aware of a NY law but one similar to CT would be nice. I would actually add some restrictions to prevent abuse and protect the employer as well. Maybe the protection would only be good for a certin number of hours of volunteer service during your workday like 40 or 80. Maybe a tax break can be given to employers that allow employees to respond from work.
  25. Maybe looking at doing something flickr and have people upload photos there and tagging them for EMTBRAVO. There might be a few flickr tools that you can also use to intergrate something into .com page.
