  2. Can't you put a performance bond in the bid in case of situations like this? And I wonder if there's any company that will buy the truck "as is" and finish it up? Or would it be seized in the bankruptcy case? It's an interesting side note that the same investment group, Patriarch Parters, owns Transcare as well, amongst other companies.
  3. Just curious, who do you select to place on your fire apparatus committee, and why? Also, do you formally (written, etc) survey department members to see what they want on the next generation of their apparatus?

  5. I'm not saying let them speak a foreign language and not any English. Get them to a level of proficiency before letting them take classes or join a department. If they have the want and will, they'll want to learn the language so they can help Then have them change bottles, pack hose, etc until confident they cant communicate at a proficient level. And, when they do learn English, I've found having a bilingual partner is an asset. They can often translate, which can affect care greatly. It's often a relief to the family, who, during a crisis, can have a better idea of what's going on. You can't work EMS if you can't speak English, even with an interpreter. To begin with, you need to be able to communicate with medical control and write in English. And most, if not all, agencies require that you are able to speak, read, and write English. Also, sick is sick.. If someone speaks a little English, and is taking English classes, I'd have no problem with them riding third until they are proficient in speaking english. Bagging and doing compressions doesn't require much. Carrying patients or equipment doesn't require much. When you need extra hands and those hands are not there can have a great affect on care. This has nothing to do with "illegals", this has to do with the fact they are already here, many have skillsets not being used from their home countries, and volunteer departments, especially in areas with a high concentration of immigrants, shouldn't be turning people away.
  6. Beautiful! I'd love to know who the buyer is, and if he has any other pieces of fire apparatus in his collection.
  7. Heck, we have guys on the fireground nowadays that speak perfect English and can't communicate! In the history of the fire service, there were a lot of immigrants recruited who couldn't speak English. If this current population wants to bolster the ranks, I'm sure they'd have the desire to learn English as well. And just like we send people to all different kinds of fire courses, why not send them to an ESL class at the local community college? Are we really in the position to turn away people who want to help? And can their language skills benefit the community when a firefighter can communicate with citizens in their native language, therefore improving fireground communication?
  8. Didn't they recently repair Yonkers Rescue 1 under warranty? Did they do that in house as one of their last acts, or did they farm it out?
  9. How will the assets be disposed of? Like the building, ambulances, and equipment?
  10. What a shattered success story. It's sad that they bought all these great brands (LTI, etc) to bring into their portfolio, and then ruined them as well. It was going so well for them, I wonder who exactly started them down the wrong path? And it doesn't even look like they even tried to sell the company. I wonder what plans they have for departments that have warranties and/or need parts and service?

  12. I really like this idea. Takes a lot of the effort and danger of climbing over a hose bed to pack hose away. What does everyone else think?
  13. I hope this is an interesting topic. What ONE thing do you think rookies should know, and why?
  14. Why is it that Firefighters and Police Officers in NYS can retire after 20 years under civil service laws, yet 911 Dispatchers that fall under civil service laws can't until what, 30 years?
  15. Does any department have a policy in which, when there is a high likelihood a taser will be deployed, or if a taser is actually deployed, that it automatically generates an EMS ALS level response? And, do the medics, once they get there, have standing orders?

  17. Does anyone know where Eastchester TL-17 is? Did Eastchester get rid of it? Heard it was sitting outside at "Station 6", the temporary warehouse the North End Firehouse was running out of for two years while their floors were repaired, and took a little beating from the weather since it didn't fit in it. I've heard they are running Ladder 15 (ex L-17), but I heard that failed it's UL test? But Eastchester is a community that really needs a Tower Ladder, given all the multi-story apartment buildings, especially some that are filled with senior citizens, so it doesn't make sense that TL-17 would be replaced by L-15? Just confused and hope someone can straighten me out. Also, what's the staffing on Engine 31 and TL-17 nowadays?

  21. New episode airs tonight 10PM Eastern on NBC. The spinoff, "Chicago Police", airs tomorrow night 10PM Eastern on NBC. As I said earlier, if you liked "Third Watch", these shows are much like them. I'm looking forward to the premiere of Chicago Police tomorrow night, they've already done a lot of crossovers and really set it up for the new show. The shows will work together nicely.
