  1. Who's responsibility is it to dig out hydrants in your community? I know many FD's take on the task. But, if the water department is responsible for maintaining the hydrants, are they also responsible for maintaining access to the hydrant. especially during snowstorms?

  11. From Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner's email list. What role or void will this position replace or fill? Will another FF have to be fired, and another promoted as well? Will this affect the much needed firehouse expansions and renovations they really need?
  12. FDNY has hydrant dethawing units, which use steam to de-thaw hydrants. How does this work, exactly, and would there ever be a need to unthaw a hydrant usually?
  13. This comment recently appeared in an online publication regarding a recent fire, which brought me to thinking. Should having no hydrants nearby be a "complication"? If the area does not have a hydrant system, and the FD is preplanned for that area, shouldn't the water supply (tankers) be the norm? Should residents in non-hydranted areas be advised that, hey, there are no hydrants near your house. This may delay putting water on your fire. Would that prompt funding for hydrants or modern technology dry hydrants for areas that used to be rural farmland, but now contain million dollar homes? Just another idiotic thought of mine.
  14. Absolutely horrible. These interchanges and "flyovers" are very scary, and ice up in a flash.. And Texas barely has any sanders or spreaders, so people need to stay off the road if they don't need to be somewhere important and/or drive on the ice. http://www.dallasnews.com/weather/20140210-more-drizzle-moves-in-after-slick-roads-leave-4-dead-across-dallas-fort-worth.ece

  17. There are the Nolan Carts, and then there's the Subway vehicle, but that's so compact and fits in a trailer (it's in the background of the shot below) I think the above would be overkill. Could be used for tons of things. The rear axle placement has me wondering what type of load it will handle. And usually FDNY vehicles come fully lettered and outfitted with lights. Sure is sharp looking though whatever it's function!

  19. I really wish I could be a 45-Medic (and that skinny) again. The grass wasn't greener on the other side. Only the trucks in the department that changed the course of my life were. Being a 45-Medic was an awesome job, I loved the people I worked with and the area I served, and I miss it. I wish I knew and appreciated then how good I had it there. I hope everyday that that opportunity, the chance, to work there again would present itself, but so far, it hasn't. :-)
  20. Regarding "On The Homefront "Online Get Well Cards, take the minute to post and show your support.......many members over time have told me what a support thread has meant to them. Family members have also written stating these "Online Get Well Soon" meant a lot to them, and were comforted by how many people cared about that member, and enjoyed reading reflection posted. Anyone can post an agency patch with a candle on Facebook and have their words scattered about, but show your support with meaningful words in a central place here on EMTBravo to sign an "Online Get Well Card" So take a moment and show support..
  21. I forgot to mention. We print out these cards and give them to our members while they are still in the hospital. It's an uplifting read when you're recovering in a hospital bed.
  22. LOL. I've had more diabetics attack me then heroin overdoses. The overdoses most often seem to be happy. I'm sure 4 firefighters can restrain the patient until I get there with another magic drug...Versed! Also, I forgot to mention on my post above. ALWAYS BE CAREFUL-THE PATIENT MAY STILL HAVE NEEDLES ON THEIR PERSONS, SUCH AS POCKETS. Use caution and ask PD if there's there to pat them down, as they are trained in this.
  23. I've just been told he is still critically ill and intubated, but is slowly making positive progress each and every day The next few days as he is weaned off the vent, some of the meds, and gets an MRI and other testing, we will know more. OVAC and our EMS family from all over has been there holding vigil 24/7 and supporting his family, but that goes without saying. He needs our continued prayers now more then ever. I know he's going to come out of this, but it's going to be a long battle that we're all going to be there for to help him through.
