  5. Does any department around the NYC metro area monitor cyanide levels of firefighters during rehab? And do any EMS agencies carry Cynokits?
  6. I never knew that NBC's Winter Olympic coverage is produced in Stamford via feeds from Sochi and in house anchor spots. Seems like a pretty massive facility, and employs 600 people. Stamford seems to have quite a few TV productions in town, and growing. WWE also has their corporate headquarters and a separate TV production facility in Stamford that produce TV shows worldwide, the YES Network is produced in Stamford, and further away in Bristol, is ESPN's headquarters. Hopefully, even with tax credits, we'll continue to see KME's being delivered to Stamford. http://www.ctnow.com/business/hc-haar-nbc-sports-olympics-production-20140214,0,4530221.column
  7. Interesting study. Does any department around here have a portable radio placement policy? Read the study at: http://www.vententersearch.com/supplemental/fairfaxradioreport.pdf
  8. They chose. Trust me. LAFD is not going to do business with anyone who's not going to deliver a quality piece. With this contract, if they didn't like the product they have the option to go out to bid again. Both Seagrave and Pierce come in A LOT higher, because they know the departments that really want them will pay the price, so they bid high. And the city's been financially turbulent when this was awarded, so of course they want to get the best price for the best apparatus that will meet their needs. Also, KME has a KME-owned factory sales and service center just outside LA, and they provide excellent service. They also did their homework, and looked closely at the over at the KME's of Los Angeles County. TLAFD is very specific in what they want, and KME fit the bill. They could have chose who they wanted, low bid or not.

  11. I agree. I don't understand why the mall WOULDN'T install CO Detectors on their own. Now, they're probably going to be the subject of many multi-million dollar lawsuits, instead of installing comparatively inexpensive CO detectors which may have prevented this situation altogether. I see this incident changing the game. Also, can't local municipal code require CO Detectors as well?

  14. In regards to the loss of Rescue 24, it seems it just went back into service last year after the cab was almost totaled by a ladder truck that struck and smooshed the front upper portion near the center of the cab while it was parked after a parade. After extensive repair, it was placed back into service. And now this. Doesn't Goldens Bridge have a new tanker on order from Spartan ERV or 4 Guys?

  17. I lived in Austin, TX for several years. It was awesome. I loved it. TX is a MUCH cheaper place to live, and the stereotype that TX has I found to be very untrue in a lot of aspects. Houston is a great city with a lot to offer anyone. Emergency Services in TX are very progressive in many fashions. It's a great FD to work for, very busy. Do you have an EMS certification as well? That will be a BIG part of your job, as Houston FD runs BLS, ALS, and transporting units. I found that FF certifications vary from department by department. The State may recognize some certifications, but there's always conflict because NY wants to do things their way and differently, so it's really a toss up when trying to transfer to any state. Most TX departments want you to learn other things that apply in TX, but not in NY, such as wildland firefighting. Also to note, one of the best firefighter training schools in the country is located just north of Houston: http://www.teex.com/esti/ Any questions , feel free to post here or PM me. I have several friends who work for Houston FD, and I can try and find out what I can for you. I also am familiar with a lot of things about moving from NY to TX, so again any questions let me know. Also, several members on here are native Texans that can help as well

  20. A "Plow trailer", in theory, cuts down the number of trucks needed to clear a multiple lane highway. They are catching on quickly, as it reduces the need for more trucks. Check out the video. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh6vhzVT3Zc]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh6vhzVT3Zc
