  1. In Westchester County, when additional alarms are struck for a fire scene, it brings more manpower. Does it bring more ambulances as well?
  2. Looks like Seagrave is reintroducing the Apollo II rear mount platform......and it's a LOT smaller and more reasonable then the previous generation of Apollos. The bucket is almost identical to the Aerialscope bucket. I hope these are a success for departments who want a RM Tower Ladder and a Seagrave. Contact Hudson Valley Fire Equipment if your department is interested in learning more. For those going to FDIC, it will be at booth 5130.
  3. Here is the official apology letter: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/1098403-apology-letter-from-anthony-loguidice.html
  4. Is there a protocol on how long a FAST team should remained assembled and ready on a fire scene? I would think that it would be until every firefighter is out of the building for good, meaning after overhaul, investigation, etc. Is it? Because anything can happen with that compromised structure, even after knockdown.
  5. You'd think that these guys would be exhausted from all the "hands on" (all the multiple alarm fires in NW) training in the past several weeks. I liked the comments. Very descriptive for the layperson. Full article and photos: http://www.themarthablog.com/2014/03/my-neighbors-recycled-a-house-and-the-katonah-fire-department-benefitted.html

  11. Kevin Bristol, an active Peekskill FD Career Firefighter, passed away suddenly today at 48 years old. It is being considered an LODD, no further details at this time. Wake and funeral arrangements to be posted as soon as they are provided to us. Thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and Peekskill FD. Please sign our online condolence card by posting in this thread.
  12. The windows were boarded up during search and rescue exercises to keep the smoke in, just like at the smoke house at the training center. The boards were removed for live burn and other exercises. No accelerant was used, only hay for kindling. There were several back up lines, as well as FAST teams on standby at all times. There were safety officers accounting for everyone. The condition of the structure was dynamically monitored. The drill went successfully. They tend to have 1-2 donated homes a year in northern Westchester for the past several years, and are always very safety conscious and following guidelines, including have certified instructors on site.
  13. A very interesting article about the heroes of this winter.... http://www.autoblog.com/2014/03/27/driven-to-work-snowplow-driver/?a_dgi=aolshare_facebook
  14. Thank you Scott for the factual information presented on here. It is much appreciated. +1
  15. I've never seen construction like this. Steel frame on first floor, with lightweight wood trusses supporting a wood frame on top. Portions (besides the elevator shaft) are also concrete block. And in some portions of the first floor, (not where the cars are parked), lightweight wood trusses and plywood are the base of the first floor. What kind of construction is this when you call a size up? I've never quite seen a mix like this. Seems like you would be forced to go on a lightweight truss roof if you were searching the floor above. When this is built, looks can be deceiving.
  16. I thought Stryker has Ferno pinned for a while, but this new stretcher blows away their "Powerload" system! One the best features, besides assisting going down stairs, is the fact that you don't have to buy special equipment for your ambulance just for it. The "Commercial" video And the "Features" video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBVssnwQCBE
  17. I thought WEMS contract ended in December? The dispatch center sounds different on the radio, and also a lot of new voices. http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php/topic/49735-somers-may-switch-to-60-control-for-dispatching/?hl=somers I've heard about all kinds of conflicts of interest between members of WEMS, Somers, and 60 Control. Like the Commissioner who drew up the WEMS contract got voted out as Commissioner, and when he did, he was made WEMS Communications Supervisor. Or their was a new hire at 60 Control that ended up not finishing probation who was also a Somers FD Commissioner, when he was at 60 he pushed for the switch, when he left 60 he pushed against the switch. Doesn't this contract have to go out to bid for professional services in the first place? I mean, the contract for EMT"s had to go out to bid. I've also been told if there is no one at Lincolndale, there would be no one to watch all the security cameras at all the firehouses. And they need a person at Lincolndale to do other unique tasks only Somers FD Dispatch does. Another piece I've heard was that Somers dispatches on VHF and won't go UHF, and 60 Control doesn't have the compatible equipment nor invest in it. Did they make 60 Control make all the preparations and do all the legwork neccesary, and then Somers told them "just kidding!"? Does Somers FD EMD every caller? So much drama. Is there anyone that can sort the fact from fiction?

  19. I forgot the 105' 1,250lb tipload and 2,000 GPM specs part of the bucket. Also the new I-beam construction of the ladder. Also, compare to the OLD version of the Apollo: http://x635photos.com/displayimage-773.html
  20. And this is the roof/cockloft:
  21. I've wondered, what's the benefit of having a split tilt cab versus a full tilt? Is it for height restrictions during maintenance inside the station, or what?
  22. Pretty interesting way to deal with the shortage. The dispatchers should have systems to not need to make broadcasts like that. Sounds like they need a good CAD system with GPS ambulance locator. Besides adding more ambulances, dispatchers need to be able to optimize with the ambulances they already have. It seems strange that dispatchers wouldn't know where there ambulances are.
