Tragic. Not a very nice neighborhood at all. RIP. FULL STORY: http://www.whec.com/news/stories/S3551047.shtml Partial radio transcript. I can only imagine how scary the scene must have been.....especially when they say officer involved shooting and "large crowd gathering".

Is it just me, or does it seem that residential natural gas incidents are on the rise? http://news.yahoo.com/four-dead-paris-suburb-building-explosion-200657554.html It seems like natural gas incidents are on par with the amount of calls for residential or commercial alarms nowadays. And it seems we've had building explosions like the one linked above more frequently. Maybe one of our members who's been in the fire service for a while can tell me whether natural gas calls are on the rise?

Very cool to hear stories like this. I love when departments realize that sharing services works. And when it actually goes past the "thinking about it" stages too.

We, of course, all know the answer to this one. Still an interesting piece on the "Today Show" on NBC this morning. Especially with the GoPro footage they collected. VIDEO: http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/what-slows-down-emergency-responders-when-every-second-counts-n194126

How important is it to you that your dispatch agency maintain consistency when giving the intial dispatch? Different dispatchers will phrase and format the same incidents several different ways. Is it important that every dispatcher in the same agency dispatch in the same format using the same concise terminology and format? Or should every dispatcher be able to dispatch in their own "style"?

By the book in my eyes. These officers showed great professionalism and restraint with this subject, who was given every opportunity to comply before it escalated to the next level.

That's what I thought as well. Doesn't Con Ed have a more stringent protocol of calling for the FD sooner as a result of that incident?

Coming together nicely, Steve! In your estimate, how many hours have you put in and expect to put in building this?

I've always wondered when looking at antique apparatus. Why were there so many open cabs with no roofs? You'd think that the fire apparatus would be responding in all weather, and they would want some protection. This trend lasted from when motorized fire apparatus was invented, until about the 1970's. Was there some sort of practical reason for not having a roog?

OK, so we all know about the 2 in/2 out rule. However, surveying some local agencies surprised me. Some consider 2 certified interior firefighters with 2 exterior-only firefighters as sufficient. Some considered the IC and having three interior firefighters. And some consider the pump operator as an interior firefighter, all used to get around the policy (law?). Is it correct for me to consider it to means 2 (or more) interior qualified inside, and 2 (or equivalent) qualified interior firefighters ready to go outside? Also, can you factor in units that are enroute to count towards this and go in assuming they will make it to the scene? This obviously wouldn't be prudent. How is adherence to this policy monitored and enforced, on both the local, state, and federal levels?

I read a book (still available in e-Book format) called "The Jump Out Boys". It's about being a "COPS" cameraman, and the risks they knowingly take. I think it is one of the few "media" outlets these days that really does law enforcement justice and reflects them in a good light. (No pun intended). It shows what LEO's go through on a day to day basis. There is a reason it's one of the first, and still the most pure of the "reality" genre out there. It's also one of the longest shows on television, first on FOX and now on SPIKE. We should be lucky that these agencies still let the "media" ride along, it is one of the best types of transparency there is.

One of the coolest Police Special Operations trucks I've ever seen. ( I know it's old news to some, but it's the first time I've seen it.....I didn't even know it existed actually) Westchester County Police Special Response Team 9097 2014 Freightliner/Hackney Photo by me.

I think STAT213's post is a good way to end this discussion. He gives some good advice and hopefully some will listen. For the record, EMTBravo and me supports Westchester County Police Department and it's mission based on numerous years experience and familiarization with the agency.. It's one of the very few agencies in Westchester that truly understands and utilizes the "shared services" concept. I'm dismayed that there are some people who forget this equipment is there to protect us all who are in Westchester, resident or not. We're very lucky to have these relatively standard (to most major metropolitan areas PDs across the country) resources available to us. And lucky enough to have officers brave enough to man these type of units. It's unacceptable to bicker for bickering's sake and cause misconceptions on issues like this. To anyone STILL questioning the need, please re-read my post below:

Doesn't the president travel with his own armored Type III ambulance painted black like the other Secret Service vehicles? Can't the Feds supersede local and state jurisdictions? It would probably be logistically impossible to have one ambulance if traveling through multiple jurisdictions. I'm surprised that it wasn't Empress. The Pope uses Empress when he's in town. I'm interested to find out the facts, hopefully from someone as MLSS. It is a pretty cool honor to have!

I heard Croton FD dispatched to a commercial alarm at the Metro North Croton-Harmon Locomotive repair facilty. I wasn't paying attention to the first Engine sign on, but I think it was Engine 119 and they said "Engine 119 responding code three".... Rescue 18 then signed on and stated "Rescue 18 responding code 1". A few minutes later, Tower Ladder 44 stated they were responding "Code 2". Is this related to the typical use of warning light and sirens, or do the codes mean something else?
