I happened upon this idea twice this morning, once on another forum and another website, and I found it to be pretty unique. The idea (as I said before, not mine I picked it up off another site) is called "Tuesday Night Pizza" You get a local pizzeria to donate pizzas (or purchase them if you have to). Between 1700-1900 hours, you either take a pizza thats going out for delivery or randomly deliver a pizza to a random residence on your fire apparatus. The trick is this- If they have working smoke detectors (or carbon monoxide detectors),WITH working batteries, in proper locations, the pizza is free. If they don't, they pay for the pizza and the fire crew installs detectors. Another part of the idea is to get the local hardware store or insurance agent involved to donate the detectors. I think it's a great idea, not only does it promote the use of smoke detectors, but it's great public relations.

I found this website very interesting. Has tons of information regarding local highways and roads, and even exit lists, history, planning maps, and classic photos of those roads. http://www.nycroads.com

Take a look at this: http://hometown.aol.com/brg86/otherfires.html 1. Did they back up onto the sign, which lifted the car up? If so, that's a darn strong post! 2. Are they using the ESU Bumper to stabilize the front of the vehicle? That's a pretty decent idea, it's not going to roll foward anywhere. Those heavy duty bumpers rock. (That's also a interesting bumper with the siren speakers and I can't tell what else, lol) 3. That's gotta be a pain for a wrecker to get down.

Ask the weatherman, but even they don't know. I just watched/read three different reports, and got three different forecasts. My only prediction is, as Truck4 mentioned, is that you'll be in school 'till July!

I just would like to point out something here. A grant should be something that is earned and something that is supplemental. You should work hard to get the grant, and demonstrate the need, for example Bedford Hills worked to get theirs. Fire departments should depend on a supportive goverment (Don't complain unless you are politically active and vote!, Make the politicians know they have to give us the money. This goes for "Commisioners" too), wise spending (dont say you need money if you're spending $$ on BS, CUT THE FAT!!!), and innovative solutions as their primary source of money to aqquire/upgrade equipment. A grant should be an added bonus. Their are many department's out there who have nothing, many rural communities with inaquate fire protection, that would love to have what the poorest (if their is even such a thing) department in WC has. It's my opinion that most department's in WC dont even really NEED the grant (How many fire safety trailers that are used once a year does the county have? Hasn't anybody heard of sharing, and maybe buying different pieces to have a more diverse arsenal of FP tools?!) Nobody shares, and everybody has to have their own do-dah whatever that may be, and by doing that in particular, you're taking away "food from the hungry". I'm not saying nobody should get grants, but nobody should depend on them. There is so much fat to be cut and so many solutions to make things affordable in the fire service in WC, nobody should have to depend (key word:depend) on grants to purchase anything that is critical. Anybody who is is basically gambling with peoples lives.

Just my opinion, but it doesn't matter if their was a test in this situation. The pagers should have been shut off before entering the facility where they were visiting to show respect to the deceased and their family. To have pagers go off and FF's rush out during a wake is just rude and disrespectful to me. If the answer is "who will respond to calls?" than either have somebody outside to monitor the radio and quietly and politely alert those inside, or better yet, send people in at various times as to not deplete your staff.

This can, and will, be a major problem in the near future for us too.

It's good to hear they went to that system. I remember when I worked there, to activate C and O, you had to individually numeric page each member, which was a very time consuming and manual proccess, especially if you had to repage or needed more members.Often, a member didn't get the page due to a malfunction with the paging company's network, and the pager phone number lists were ever changing and difficult to keep up with. I'm thinking they didn't go with UHF pagers becuase they don't have a system to transmit it from Valhalla to countywide on a UHF frequency yet.

My thoughts and prayers go out to DC Kiernan's Family. I heard the news early this AM, and was shocked. From www.new12.com

Truck4 submitted an excellent photo of DC Kiernan doing his thing. It's now posted on the front page of EMTBravo.com...Thanks for sharing that photo. Those who knew and worked have expressed appreciation. I met DC Kiernan first when TL-71 was first delivered to YFD. He took the time to show us around the truck, and was extremly proud of it being an ALF. He truly knew, loved and was proud of his job, that of being a firefighter more than he was of being a DC IMO, and there will be a tremndous gap in YFD that won't be replacable. He was responsible personally for many of the Special operations equipment that YFD has aqquired. I saw the funeral events on News 12, and I was unable to make the service this AM, but it is always uplifiting to see such a turnout. It's good to know that his wife will always have that huge extended family.Tradgedy strikes often in the Fire service, and if anything can be taken from this, it should serve as a reminder to us all how abrupt life can be, to live each day to it's fullest, and put all the petty differences, hatred, and other issues that we spend so much time getting aggravated about aside, and enjoy and learn from one another. May the DC rest in peace.
