Since I don't have to uga today, I was bored, and yes pathetically googling myself. I came up with a great little blast from the past....my Northeastern University medic class website, containing our class nicknames. I thought you would all get a kick out of my class nickname: http://www.dac.neu.edu/uc/j.king/medic/class47.html There's a story behind every name. I had the best medic class ever and am still close with everybody in that class and extemly proud to have gone, suceeded, and graduated from NU Class 47.

New sandwich shop coming to Mohegan. Blimpies will open a store when they renovate Wal-Mart in the Cortlandt Town Center. On a sperate note, the renovation is to make Wal-Mart appear "more upscale" I've only had Blimpies a couple times, it's like Subway, only much bigger and higher quality ingredients. This is their first store in Westchester, I believe. The only other one was in White Plains, which I believe is now closed. It also marks the explosion of quick service sandwich shops in this county, with Subway and Quiznos both multiplying by the day. Now if we could only get a "Firehouse Subs": http://www.firehousesubs.com/ And a Panera Bread and Arbys wouldn't hurt either....

Just like lime green fire apparatus, tan (or yellowish) gear not only looks better, it's more visible.

What do you say here? I don't even know what to say......although we all knew to expect this after Jimmy's long and valiant fight was unfairly thrown another curve, it still comes as a shock and a suprise. I was convinced there was going to be a miracle to save Jimmy, I don't accept or understand this, I think it is just a physical change in being. As Jim said, "God Loaned Us An Angel" and that couldn't be truer. You have gone through one of the most difficult and drawn out things life can throw at you and come out stronger for it. I'm currently reflecting on the first time I met you and Jimmy a couple of years back, before or just when this all started I think. What a long road it's been, but a lot of good has been accomplished, and thats what Jimmy was sent here to do. I feel horrible for not being able to visit more the past couple of weeks, usually I was there on Wednesday nights with our Weds night tour. I don't want to say anything else stupid, that's just whats on my mind. Jim, Gina, and all....you know where I stand with you....my prayer and thoughts always. Now to see what JimmyBoy can do from up above............

Among the knowledge that was shared, our instructors/officers in class shared with us this awesome story today, and I got to thinking how much it applies to the fire service. So I wanted to share it with you all, and see if you can relate it to this business like I did. Amazing story.

I apologize for forgetting to thank Capt. Ferguson and Lt. Van Voorhies for sharing that awesome story!!

So I wonder what this means for us? A new frequency to put in our radio systems, or is the city going to purchase something for us to use? I wonder how this will work operationally as well? What and how will it be used?
-
Personally, I don't feel any community is completly "prepared". What does that word even mean exactly? I think when we say "OK, we're prepared, we're ready" is when we have problems. We should always be improving equipment, training, and looking at different angles and possibilities. We should always be able to handle ANYTHING that comes our way, but should never be complacent about it. Another angle, mentioned by another member earlier in this thread, is that we need to learn to work together at everyday bread and butter type situations before we can succesfully work together at an incident of the described magnitude. The radio system alone in this county is a disaster in itself.....46.26 could not handle such a large scale event, and radio/telephone/communications centerS (notice the plural) interoperability....fugghedaboutit! On another note, who knows what methods this reporter may have used to gain access to the dam. "Hooks", etc.

As many of you know, I am a big fan of Boston FD. So I just wanted to share with you their new deliveries, two 2005 Pierce Dash 100' Midmount Tower ladders. These midmount TL's are a first for Boston....up until a couple of years ago, with the addition of TL-10, a 2002 Pierce Dash RM Tower, and before that a 1995 E-One RM Tower, the TL was a special call unit. These additions bring the TL count in the city up to 3, and they will each now cover their own special and first in districts. Just to note, they are Dash's, just with the Enforcer front grill and turn signal assembiles as per Boston spec's so they match the Enforcer engines. The only thing I wish is that they were Pierce Arrow XT's! I think the towers look awesome! Another nice product put out by Pierce. If Seagrave loses FDNY, I wonder if that would be the end of the long financial problem-plagued Seagrave???

About the title..."Jake" is the term for a firefighter in Boston Newton, MA is a fairly wealthy suburb of Boston, actually butts right up against the Brookline section of the city. Commonwealth Ave, I-95 (Rte 128) and the Mass Pike (I-90), and the and the Boston marathon, runs right through the city, and the city also includes Boston College and Lasell College, as well as numerous other office buildings, schools, plazas, etc. The city, which is very old, has numerous sttructures dating back to the 1800's and even before that, and many close together. The firefighters were protesting the closing of Engine 6, other staffing cuts throughout the city, and impending layoffs. Apparently, the way they went about it has made them Public Enemy #1 in Boston. For some added history, the firefighters have had a long-running contract dispute with the city, and picketed the Democratic National Convention in Boston in 2004. In 1993, 11 Newton FF's were critically burned in a sodium explosion at a metals-processing plant in the city. The city has also had several fatal fires over the past decade. To read the guestbook comments talked about in the article below, click here: http://www.efreeguestbooks.com/mg/multi.pl?8313:9:0 Definelty worth a read, there are several interesting comments on there.

What a horrible story. Every time each story comes out, it gets worse and worse and you wonder how stuff like this happens. I guess when resources are strained and traffic is gridlocked.....if anything, hopefully lessons are being learned from this.

Firehouse USA: Boston will premiere it's next episode September 20th (next Tuesday) on the Discovery Channel. If you remember, there was a sneak preview of this show in July. The show will repeat at 11pm, and again sometime during the following weekend. It should be a regularly scheduled series, every Tuesday night, but for some reason it's only showing one episode listed at this time.."Huntington Ave Express".

It looks like Rita is fierce and heading to the Gulf Coast. Not again. What's with these massive hurricanes every year?

Having witnessed and worked with Boston FD, and being a Boston FD fan, despite what may be portrayed on the show (DONT FORGET CREATIVE EDITIING!!!) they get the job done quite effectively and safely a majority of the time...however they are a very traditonal, very deeply rooted, and very old department with a lot of issues. As far as the next "Firehouse USA"....I'd love to see LA City!!!
