  4. Jim was a legend in FDNY, where he retired as a Lt. from Rescue 1. Before his retirment in 1995, he was involved in many high profile rescues and incidents. In his off time, he spent countless hours raising money for the NY Burn foundation, including money that went to both victims and towards enabling progressive treatment modalties at area burn centers, including Weill-Cornell's Burn Center. I hope other firefighters are able to continue the trend he started 25 years ago, as burns are a horrible inury that could happen to any one of us at anytime...something that could be devastating, and we should never neglect the attention this issue deserves.....remember how firefighters have fought to open and keep open many burn centers that are sorely needed across this country. RIP Jim. Funeral Arrangements for Jimmy Curran are as follows: RIP
  5. I'm sorry Orlando, I mean "Tower"
  6. That's it! What is it?
  7. LOL. I think we all have 1000 nicknames.....Forcible Phil will like his new one! And check out the new hats we got today....so now all our hats match, and show class pride
  8. Nope. To the right of the new electric vault simulator....the object I'm wondering about has been there since the Groden era at least.
  9. Next week sounds awesome! Thanks for the preview! I'll be sure to get my rest this weekend! As far as Doc goes, I think he is transferring to Peekskill....ALSFirefighter has him under contract now, lol! I sit next to Phil, thanks for giving me that name! I will put it to good use! And thanks for the caps Capt....photos should be posted shortly!
  10. I had quite possibly one of the most unique and greatest slices of Pizza ever last night. It was from Gerardos, at 444 E. Main St. in Mount Kisco, opposite Friendlys. It was their "Special Of The Day", which is a rotating fest of pizza toppings. The slice yesterday was a regular, thin pizza crust, topped plentifully with mashed potatoes with a hint of sour cream, interlaced with melted cheddar cheese and large chewy pieces of bacon. This slice was really, really GOOD! I hope it becomes a regular on the menu! If you have the chance, try it!
  11. Photos from Probie Class 03-2005's trip last Tuesday to the NYS Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Albany have been posted. Scroll to the bottom of the page for the newest photos: http://www.westchestergov.com/emergserv/academy/probpics.htm (Photos by Lt. Van Voorhies, WPFD) I will be posting about the trip there when time permits And if we look cold...that's because it was cold! Photos from Capt. Burk's visit and from our FF Safety and Survival Evolutions are also up, newest photos are always at the bottom of the page.
  12. LMAO! That's a great photo of Chris!
  13. The Stryker Autolifts work off a Dewalt Battery pack, same as you'd use in your cordless drill.
  14. What a unique non-conventional training oppurtunity! I wish I could attend.
  15. I was wondering if anybody else on this board noticed the new Journal News layout and dislike it ? Before the redesign, on a busy day when I just wanted to read the local news...which is the main reason I would read the Journal News, I could just pull out the local section, and read what's going on in the county, the editorials, and the obits, etc. Now, the Local news is mixed vaguely and unexplainably into two sections of the paper, the front section and a new section entitled "Your World", making it hard to navigate to the news I want to read in a quick fashion. Now, on very busy days, instead of reading one section, I have to read two. The dedicated, central local news section is gone. The paper is also loaded with what seems to be even more ads then before. The increased intergration of local current events seems to be a ploy to get readers to read more of the paper...and subsequently more of the ads. Although I understand why advertising is important, I think a newspaper should sometimes realize why readers are important, and how you shouldn't have to consume all your time hunting for the stories you read the paper for. Maybe it will take some time to get used to. There also seems to be a focus on more national stories, and a new theme "LoHud.com". In this redesign, they also redid their website....I miss their old, familiar simple website, but this new one seems decent. As someone who is an avid newspaper reader, and has and still reads many different dailys from across the country, most have dedicated local sections. I wish we could have the LOCAL news section back. I'm going to start my own local daily newspaper. I wonder how I would recruit Frank Beccera from the Journal News, lol. And hopefully I'd already have Truck4, an experienced news photographer in addition to the many other members of this site who get great photos. And yes, I have submitted my comments to them.
  16. I remember when my father got me my first scanner at like 8 or 9 years old, I got this book with it. This was before the internet, before the Scanner Master book, a companion to PC of sorts which made understanding the frequencies and what was going on easier, and before I had friends who shared the same interest. With frequencies from this book, I discovered 60 Control, the NYS Thruway Authorities very disciplined operations channel, and many of my other favrorite frequencies. I never realized the history of the book until now, never knew how it grew out of the LA buff culture. I always thought it was just a book sold in Radio Shack. Despite not having read it in years, I have several older copies, I will miss the memories this book brings. I understand with the advent of the internet, email etc.....this book is becoming obsolete. Additionally, with all the new radio systems coming out, and the internet, I wonder if traditional scanning is becoming obsolete?
  17. I didnt think it got any worse, but over the past couple days I too have noticed a significant decrease in my Central Westchester area news, and a increase in Putnam and Rockland stuff. NOT WHY I READ THE JN!!! Not like you can find any of the news anyway with the scattered layout and ads all over....and the JN STILL has not replied in any way to my email. I'm thinking now about cancelling my subscription.
  18. The new Stryker Autolift Stretchers are hot! When used properly, they really save you a lot of work. As far as Ferno goes, I have used many models. It seems many of their newer models are a direct response to Stryker....the ProFlexx is theoratically a nice model...but the quality and durabilty is HORRIBLE.
  19. Wow! That is one awesome Pierce!! It's too bad nobody from that area has a camera and will submit photos so the rig can be shared with everybody around here!!!
  20. Awesome! I love the way it is broken down! Here's a direct link to the page at LAFirePhotos.com Stats Page: http://www.lafirephotos.com/lafdhistoricallist/lafdstats.htm
  21. I was just wondering, it seems like every area of this country has their own unique fire service lingo. I was wondering if there were any terms completly unique to the area, excluding FDNY terms. Like does Westchester, Stamford, Putnam etc have their own words for something firematic that no one else uses?
  22. Gee, I sense people are still sore that the Red Sox kicked the Yankees out of the playoffs last year. Just to remind everybody, the Yanks aren't there yet. Yes, I'm a Red Sox fan.
  23. I think you have me confused with the other me.....that is my other personality that is a member of Probie Class 03-2005 Eeek! Being that it is quite hard for me to shut my mouth or stop typing sometimes.... Up the homework, and take us to Aruba with you! Just don't up the homework of my classmates or I am not going to make it back from the road run!!! I'll even do a paper!! - Probie 1-3 This message paid for by the Comittee for a Demerit-Free Probie Class And on a related note: We had a very inspirational visit from a good friend of Capt. Ferguson -Capt. George Burk (USAF-Ret) this week, which I will share with you all later this week, and we are traveling to the NYS Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Albany on Tuesday, both thanks to Capt. Ferguson and associates, who are not just teaching us how to fight fires, but teaching us how to have the spirit to be true firefighters. Now, for all those who think I may be brown nosing, I really could care less. I really don't hold back with my feelings. I am passionate about anything I believe in, whether it be myself, LAFD, jetBlue, etc....many of you who know me know this well. Therefore, I love my class, I love the fellow probies that I am experiencing this class with, and I love my instructors....who I hope to be half as good as they are at some point. So, me saying these things shouldn't be percieved as sucking up, just me saying how I feel about everything. I wish I had kept a blog of my experiences starting with Day 1 so I could have elaborated more on my highs...and lows during class and during a time where I am living my dream, overcoming challenges, and becoming a firefighter.
