Recently, I've learned of the high levels of CO that can remain inside a structure after overhaul, even with ventilation. I'm wondering how many departments routinely require SCBA during overhaul, and how many departments monitor air quality inside a structure after the fire is put out???

Thoughts and prayers are with the Malone family. Billy was my union's president (Greenburgh Firefighters- IAFF Local 1586) and had just sworn myself and HFD23 in to the union a few weeks ago. Billy was also a frequent longtime visitor to this site, and thats how I got to know him at first. His last log in was last night around 2200hrs. He had strong convictions and fought and stood up for what he believed in, and loved his job. He will be missed by many. RIP Billy. Fate strikes again. Another untimely tragedy to remind us how precious life is.

As a Dodge fan, that's awesome news! I'm pretty sure that it will do well in NYC, and hope it catches on locally as well. Would love to see some for WCPD, NYSP and Greenburgh PD's!!!! This car is a real police package...no wimpy front wheel drive, engine or anything. I'm just suprised the regular radio cars will have the V-6's. I thought the V-8 was standard in the police package...but maybe they are looking for fuel economy. But I'm sure they will be happy, as will the Highway Patrol with the V-8's!

Here's a photo of White Plains FD Robertson Ave. Firehouse, located in the Chatterton/Battle Hill neighborhood at the corner of Robertson and Harding Ave's. I took this photo this past Sunday, 1-29-06. I guess this firehouse was closed when the new Station 2 opened. It appears that the station is still used for storage and training. This was neat for me, I always knew this firehouse existed, but never saw it in person. It's right off Central Ave. by the City Limits Diner....I like the way this firehouse looks, very traditonal and community based. Anyone have any more information or history on this firehouse, and what used to respond from here? Is this the one where the volunteer engine was stored, or is there another one I'm missing in the Chatterton/Battle Hill area?

So it seems like it's been real slow lately with apparatus orders in the area, or maybe I haven't heard anything. Has anybody heard of any RECENT apparatus ORDERS for the areas? If so, please share the details!

I was thinking. Rare, I know, but still. Is our safety when it comes to our helmets impeded by fashion and tradition? It seems to me that traditional firefighting helmets are more suited for protecting firefighters from falling debris then injuries sustained from falling, such as a motorcycle helmet would. I would think, let's say if a firefighter was to fall from an aerial ladder, that the traditional helmet, such as a New Yorkers, would complicate the injuries. The large brim could get snagged on something, or push/twist the firefighters neck when he lands in such a position to do considerable damage to the cervical spine. Additionally, with all the new materials out there today, is the weight neccesary, and does that do long term neck damage? There's got to be a better medium out there. I've seen new helmet concepts, but they never seem to catch on or are discarded as "ugly" and "not a New Yorker". Don't get me wrong, I love the look of the New York style helmet. But personally, my favorite helmet is the type used by LA City and California firefighters, the "Phoenix". It's lightweight, and designed in such a way as to offer fall protection as well. http://www.thefirestore.com/store/product.cfm?pID=95

It sounds like you are on the right track and making good moves, all you can really do now is continue what you are doing, stay clean and wait. It's a slow process. One piece of advice.....don't just focus and settle in on one department....you never know what's going to happen. Take every test you can. It's not only good for practice, but good for a backup plan. And the CFR class is a good idea, but EMT is better.......

Interesting story. There are some seriously wacky people out there.

Wow, that really sucks! The insurance industry are greedy morons for making this decision! Having the Fire Patrol saves millions of dollars! I'm hoping for a good outcome for all of the Fire Patrol's members jobs.

It used to be that going to these shows were awesome when I was younger. Seeing, and hearing about the new products was great. I think the internet, and the vendors sites, has dulled the "shock" of seeing some things at these shows. When I started going to these around 1996, the internet wasn't as big as it is now. When you went to shows, you'd see stuff for the first time. Nowadays, I see and hear a lot of information before I even go to the shows. As far as this show went, it wasn't much. I would think, given the crowd this show attracts, it would have more potential and try to expand a little, maybe even offer some more training. It's not even much of a trade show, it's more like a buff fest. My favorite part about going was getting to see and spend time with some of my friends. Otherwise, not much learned-which is always disspoining. And no great rigs either...it seems in past years, they always had some cool stuff there...whether it be Ladder 10 FDNY, Berwyn Heights MD's tower, etc. Another thing I hate about shows is people that bring their whole families. It's hard to look at things getting bumped or blocked by a stroller, or not being able to check out a firetruck because 20 kids are climbing all over it. As for shows, Harrisburg is THE best...the most apparatus under one roof. That's my favorite part of a show, seeing all the new concepts in apparatus and tools.

Wow, Mount Vernon's new Tower Ladder (57 Truck's City Cousin) looks awesome! This is long-needed in MV, and will definetly see some work and is perfect, will serve them well! Nice job on the design by EWFAC, can't wait to see what the 2 new Engines look like!! Interesting to see a TL on the new Commander II chasis as well. Any idea what the designation will be for this truck, and where it will be housed??? Also, I hope the guys invest in a nice ladderboard for this rig!! Thanks to EWFAC for the spy shots!
