So, I'm hearing rumors that Greenburgh PD has finally hired civilian EMT's to fill out the staffing in their ambulances. Apparently, they will be starting in the next copuple of weeks. If this rumor is true, this is an awesome move by GPD...this has been needed for a long, long time. Greenburgh EMS, which is a division of Greenburgh Police, is a very busy EMS system and call volume increases each day. Currently, the civilian Paramedic responds alone in an ambulance, and depends on a patrol sector officer or firefighter to drive the ambulance to the hospital. The Police Officer operates the PD BLS ambulance, and usually meets up with the Police Officer-Paramedic Flycar and that makes a complete ambulance. Having an EMT on the civilian ambulances will free up a police officer, make care quicker, more independent, and efficient, and improve response times. I hope this rumor is true, especially given all the other extragvagent expenditures of this town, such as a $50,000 a year "personal aide" to the town board.

Well, after mulling it over and more specifically, putting it off, for a year now, I've decided to jump into the blogging world and start a blog, that I will try and update several times a week. Previously, I've used this blog to detail some of my travels, of which you can read about somewhere on this blog. Now, not only will I use it to detail my travels, but to give a general insight into my life and going ons, and maybe post some photos as I get them along the way. I regret that I didn't begin this blog when I started probie school last year, as this has been an awesome year to write about. But, I guess starting now is better then never starting at all. Anyways, stay tuned.... http://x635.blogspot.com/ (You will be able to find the link on the front page of EMTBravo.com shortly)

The members of the Empress EMS family have endured many hard tragedies over the past few years, and here is yet another untimely and especially sad one. I am proud to have been a member of that family, and take comfort in knowing her son and her eternal needs will be tended to always by members of the Empress EMS family. Prayers and condolences to Jessica, her son, her family, friends and co-workers. RIP.

I also heard these mystery dispatches at about 2AM Friday morning 8-17-06 on 46.26. At first, I thought New Rochelle had something serious on I-95, because I heard something about "Rescue 4" being a ground contact, but they kept saying stuff about "Triple 1" and the locations they were giving didn't make sense....plus New Rochelle typically doesn't operate on 46.26. Wierd it was from Maryland, it makes sense now...

Definetly a great cause, and the money goes to a legitamate cause. I find it admirable and inspiring that the Arenas, after all they've been through, continue to make life better for anyone they can and I love how they keep the message Jimmy Boy has taught us alive. What big hearts they have.

I didn't even have to hear who it was, I somehow had a feeling it was Martin.......Yorktown's own version of Superman.

Newark's new Rescue (the photos can be seen on EMTBravo.com) is certainly one of the hottest deliveries of the year. I know a few members on this forum are assigned to the rescue, and hopefully they can fill us in more on how they like it. Newark is also a great EMS system. It is hospital based, technically a state agency since it is run by a state hospital, University Of Medicine And Dentistry New Jersey (UMDNJ) I did most of my medic school ride time at UMDNJ*EMS Newark/East Orange. Newark itself is an interesting city, very inner urban with very heavily industrialized areas, including a major airport and seaport, and numerous highways, railroads, and other commercial routes interesecting the city. Crime and violence is high, as is poverty both of which bring numerous problems into the city. Gang violence is a major problem, and it causes a lot of runs for the EMS, as well as a lot of safety issues. It's a VERY busy system, seeing lots of diverse and serious medical and trauma incidents. They operate both ALS and BLS ambulances. It's not uncommon for a single unit to run anywhere between 12-20 calls in a 12 hour shift. A rather unique part of the system is that they operate their own, very talented heavy rescue. It is staffed by two senior EMT's who have done their time on the bus in Newark, who must go through rigurous steps, internship, and training to work the rescue (It's considered a promotion). They specialize (and are primary response in Newark) for automotive extrication, bariatric rescue, and technical rescue. They work very closely with the FD Rescue and PD ESU units, but they are often the lead agency on rescue incidents and are often requested into neighboring muncipalties due to their expertise, experience, and top notch equipment. You can cleary see how a rescue company fits into patient care by observing them in action on a daily basis. UMDNJ*EMS Newark also runs a very efficient communications center, as well as the Northstar Helicopter. They have a lot of special units, including dignitary protection and bioterrorism response. They also have a BLS division that's seperate that covers the City Of Camden in South Jersey. There's a ton more to the system then this short synopsis. Also, there's a great book on the UMDNJ EMS. It was written by an author who spent 1 year riding along. It's entitled "Into The Breach", and available from Barnes and Noble, BN.com http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearc...312306172&itm=1 I HIGHLY reccomend the book, it's a great glimpse into Newark EMS, and a very hardcore city to work in......... BTW, very special thanks to BCBill for the photos!

The test contains several different tasks used to assess your ability to be trained as a dispatcher. This is how the parts of the test are described on the exam announcment. There are numerous ways to practice for this exam and sharpen your skills, so I suggest anyone who seriously wants to attempt to get on 60 Control or WCPD Commo read through this and practice. If anyone needs clarification or ways to practice these skills, feel free to ask me on this thread. If you dismiss some of these skills "oh it'll be easy" as I've heard from some out in the field, then you should stay home that day. Remember, you are COMPETING for this job.

Norwalk, CT is a large mixed city in Fairfield County, CT on the Long Island Sound, generally exits 13-21 off I95 and 20-30 minutes from most places in Westchester. The city has its very high crime areas, some industry, as well as a lot of commercial and residential premises. There is no residency requirment, preference is given first to Norwalk residents. Once you are hired you must live in the State Of Connecticut, within 40 miles of Police Headquarters. They are currently accepting applications until September 21st for their next Police Officer exam, which will be given on October 21st 2006. More information: http://www.norwalkpd.com/recruit.htm

The Westchester County exam is for both County Police AND 60 Control- they hire off the same list. County Police Dispatchers work rotating 8 hours shifts, and the 60 Control dispatchers work a nice rotating pattern of 12 hour shifts. Both are great jobs, with more importantly, great people in agencies that definetly will be expanding the future.

Looks like Turn Of River (Stamford, CT) has taken delivery of a 2006 Seagrave for Engine 64. Looks good. http://www.nefirenews.org/ne/TurnOfRiverCTE64new.jpg (Photo by Dick Bartlett, posted on www.firenews.org) Hopefully someone from up there will send in detail photos for posting on EMTBravo.com. Or maybe I'll have to take a trip up to shoot it myself, and time it to get Stamford FD's new rearmount truck.
