  1. Answering my own topic, I think photography is an art form. The rapid invasion of digital photography and easy-to-use photo editing software has made many more people "photographers I do think it is a combination of both, and luck. And I do feel there is a difference between a professional and ameteur photographer. Also, remember that a photo that you take is yours. If you send it in to a magazine or newspaper that makes money, such as a "Citizen Photos" section of a local paper, then you are taking away work from people who make their living as a photographer.
  2. I just got my copy of the just-published "They Also Served- A History Of The Non-Municpal Fire Departments Of New York City" published by Fire Apparatus Journal Publications. This book is very well researched, and contains a ton of information and over 600 photos (both past and current) of those FD's in NYC that aren't part of FDNY. They go into the history and story of the orginization. The photo collection in this book is found no where else Departments covered: -New York Fire Patrol -Port Authority Of New York And New Jersey -Military Base -Federal Agencies -City Agencies -Transportation Agencie -Amusement Facilties -Industrial Faciltieis -Institutuional Facilties -Miscellaneous -Volunteer Fire Companies -Fire Buff Organizationa -Memorial Rigs -Move Rigs Definetly worth adding to a Firematic book collection, especially if you like apparatus or FDNY I must also add, the binding of this book is done quite well. The book is available from: http://www.fire-police-ems.com/books/bt3211.shtml
  3. I'm sitting here in bed, watching the traffic go by on North Central Ave. in Hartsdale. For 4 1/2 hours, the roadway has remained snow covered, with no NYS*DOT truck in sight, despite living near a Dunkin Donuts. Even after the snowfall let up and stopped, they didn't pass by until an hour later/ Just now, a singular Mack Granite NYS*DOT truck came by and sccraped the right southbound lane and put a petty amount of sand down. The rest of the road is packed snow and ice covered. I wonder, since it's a multiple lane road, why they don't work on teams? It seems, from my experience, that Central Ave is always plowed last. Do they purposely keep the road snow and ice covered for some reason? I'd think they'd scrape the heck out of the road, then apply a salt/sand mixture. On a side note, this is the first time I've seen the new Mack Granite's in action, and they're awesome! Maybe a DPW guy on this board could explain things.
  4. What I would give to be there and see the A380 at JFK Better yet, to see it takeoff or land. I wonder what terminal they are going to use, or airstairs?
  5. I found out today that CHiPs-The Complete First Season is being released on DVD on June 5th, 2007. I've already got it preordered on Amazon.com. CHiPs one of my FAVORITE TV shows when I was a kid, and even when they used to replay them on TNT at 7AM and 8AM then moved to overnights a couple of years ago. I had hoped that TV Land would have picked up on this, but they didn't When I casually browsed through Amazon.com today, I came across the AWESOME suprise! I can't wait until I can start watching CHiPs again....I've been hoping that it would be one of the many TV shows being released on DVD. http://www.amazon.com/CHiPs-Complete-Seaso...74321247&sr=8-1
  6. My thoughts and prayers. RIP.
  7. Check out this 1981 Compac Midmount Aerial assinged to Worcester (MA) Ladder 7 Photo is by Dick Bartlett, and comes from the New England Fire website Firenews.org With that said, does anyone know where the Compacs were manufactured???? [attachmentid=2200]
  8. I went to Probie Schol with Brian Hickey. Interesting article. Sounds like a fun and unique oppurtunity. It's also nice to see that the other career departments working together and will be reieving this training.
  9. I loved that engine. I remember sitting in the drivers seat of it at Fairview's open house when I was a child.. Hartsdale still has one, will be sad to see it go. Very fun to drive.
  10. I'm curious to find out what everyone thinks on this topic. I'm reffering to Duty Vehicles such as Fire Shift Commander or Supervisors Cars, EMS lycars and Police Cars that run nonstopand have gasoline engines. Do you feel a gas or diesel engine is more suitable for the above purposes? Also, it seems to me that there's no more options for a diesel SUV on the market. Last I heard, Ford was developing a Diesel for the '07 Expedition XL, but I havn't hear mujch about that. Seems Ford has scaled back a lot in their development. Do you think that diesel engines last longer, or is that just a myth? Is the transfer or use of gasoline vehicles shorten the vehicles lifespan? If Toyota was to develop a full-size SUV with a diesel engine, would your department consider that? How important is it to your fleet to have diesels vs. gas? Lastly, am I missing anything- any diesel SUV coming out?
  11. Another DOT related item On the way to the Doctor's office today, I was being driven by my father-in-law when we passed this NYS*DOT Mack Granite blocking an accident scene on the Sprain Northbound by the I287 Eastbound ramp. [attachmentid=2178]
  12. The snow is really starting to become heavy here in Hartsdale. Around 7AM when I awoke, it was a light snowfall with black roadways on North Central Ave. Now, it's really coming down, there's hardly any traffic compared to a normal day on Central Ave, and it's covering the roadway. DOT is scarce.
  13. A lot of people are hesitant to talk about their salaries, for whatever reason. Westchetser salaries range anywhere from $22,000 starting to $90,00 for a firefighter top grade. This, for the most part, doesn't include overtime, training time, Kelly days, holiday pay, and other things that add into the pay. Also, the benefits in most departments are pretty good. However, the one thing I always tell people- become a firefighter, then worry about the salary. Getting a job here in Westchester is likke winning the lottery. It's the best job in the world. And in most departments, you have time for a B or even C job to supplement your income. I've heard the valid "I've got a family" excuse and a whole bunch of others.....but if you really want something, go for it and figure the rest out later- it may be hard for a while, but when you're behind the wheel of that Lime Pierce Engine- it's all worth it. With that said, the wealthiest town in Westchester and the busiest city pay the least. It's something you have to work through- or you'll regret it the rest of your life.

  20. Here's a question I have for all of you, and I'd love to hear your opinions. Say you live in a Town where you recieve municipal Police and EMS funded by taxes. If you need an ambulance, is it fair to get a bill from that tax-supported agency? My thoughts are- you pay a LOT in taxes for this and other town services- and you use them and get a bill?!?! Also, is this legal to do? I'm not even going to get into the ethics of billing MOS's.
  21. Has anyone upgraded to WIndows Vista yet? How do you ike it- is it worth the upgrade from XP? I'm considering it- my XPS bought last November is "Vista-ready", but the version I should get is perplexing? Also, I'm worried that my software programs that I have now won't be compatible? I guess that I would have to upgrade to Office '07 as well. I've been reading over and over about this, but it just gets me more confused- hopefully some of my fellow techies on this forum could help me out? BTW, I'm LOVING my new Macbook- even though I'm still learning the differences from Windows XP.
  22. THAT is AWESOME! Thanks TR54 for the photos! Was this custom made by that guy upsstate or in CT (Can't remember which)???
  23. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Palmer family, friends, and staff. Gowans-Knight is one of the most respected fire apparatus companies I know of. You never hear a bad word about them....rare in the industry these days. Great job, Craig.
  24. This is great news! I love these guys and these commercials, can't wait to hopefully see the pilot! It's been a while since there's been a new sitcom that I've liked.
