  3. According to a photo on LoHud.com, Mt. Pleasant PD has a hovercraft that they were using last night to rescue people in Mamaroneck. When did they obtain this, and what are the specs? Where is it stored and how is it transported?
  4. Growing up, "American Gladiator" used to be one of my favorite shows on TV. Recently, I browsed through the show on Wikipedia, and found out that on April 2nd, 2007, ESPN Classic has been airing reruns of the show weeknights at 7PM and 1AM, and weekends at 9AM and 10AM. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Gladiators for more information about the show. I Tivo'd the one tonight which I will watch tommorow. Was a very cool and unique show. I remember having the "American Gladiator" playsets and going to "American Gladiator Live" at Nassau Colliseum when I was a kid.
  5. An ambulance that's not able to talk to the fire engine in the SAME town is my issue, especially when these agencies work together routinely.
  6. With the events of last night, I'm interested to see how many people that responded to the incident had swiftwater training? I know some of my brothers in Hartsdale and Fairview have taken the course, but has anyone from the Sound Shore departments? In light of this incident, I think this is a course that should be reuired, and maybe even a formation of a swiftwater rescue team.

  11. I'm curious as to departments that spec their straight sticks without a ladderpipe. I know many cities that do it, and I always see photos of "the big one" where a manual ladder pipe (hose, hose straps, and large nozzle) has to be put in place. Why don't departments spend a couple of thousand dollars extra to have prepiped waterways to save time and energy. I know the cons include added ladder weight ,maintenance and operational issues- plus cost. I know in this area we have plenty of tower ladders, but sometimes the straight stick is able to get where those monstrosities can't.
  12. Dispatcher ID at 60 Control. x since I am no longer working there. Could be HFD30 or x700 (my old Empress Shield #), but x635's more established, lol.
  13. Wow, looks like Lennox Hill Hospital got one too. Is this Lennox Hill in NYC? [attachmentid=2470]
  14. Eeek! Good thing I have PeaPod on the way to make sure we have rations! We're going to bunker in here!
  15. I know there's many members of this site unfamiliar with "kitbashing". And there are those who are. Regardless, this (Roadblockers) is an awesome page to explain it: http://www.roadblockers.net/kitbash.htm And let's not forget some kitbash examples from our own Stepjam, who has done kitbashes of Yonkers apparatus: http://public.fotki.com/Stepjam/
  16. For print-at-home, I use an HP Photosmart 8450 that's about 2 years old now, used exclusively for photo printing, and it produces very high quality photo prints. However, I use a professional lab for most of my prints. http://www.mpix.com produces outstandiong prints on great paper, and very quick turnaround. They make my photos look amazing, and you can tell the difference between professional photographer lab and print at home. MPix is designed for the serious photographer, BTW. Getting your prints at CVS, etc is no comparison at all.
  17. I haven't heard this. I believe EMS should be it's own entity, except in such systems being part of the FD is beneficial (like LA). Also, the new VAC would be able to bill? And if lack of members, they would hire?

  19. Awhile back, I'm talking 1997ish, Mount Vernon FD used to have a old Type II Van ambulance in MVFD colors. I was told that in the late 70's/early 80's that Mount Vernon FD used to run the ambulance for the city? Truth or fiction?
  20. Photos of said unit by hfdr19 can be found here: http://www.emtbravophotos.com/SpecFeat/FleetDemoDay.html (From last year's Fleet Demo Day at Playland)
  21. Does anyone know what type/brand this chasis is? I'm torn between a Mack or Peterbilt, both of which have built custom cabs exlcusively for NYC. I've only seen a few on this chasis, most seem to be on a standard Mack MR. [attachmentid=2448]
  22. I'm curious, does the low bid process really exist in the apparatus world? It seems to me that departments get what they want, and that there are tons of loopholes in the process that allow that to happen. Also, another issue I see is salesmen who write specs for FD's that ony their company can meet and/or build. Of course, there are departments that are strictly low bid, but I don't know of many.
  23. Thanks everybody for the responses. Never heard of this company before, learn something new everyday. Wonder why the city used them? Are there any others in our area?
  24. [attachmentid=2447] Here's something I've never understood. I've seen these signs in numerous Metro North stations. I have only seen them display the date. What is the purpose or point? I'm curious why they don't display the time as well, something that would be very useful especially to the travler, especially when traveling by train. If I want to take it a step further, what about a platform advisory and train ETA?
