  1. I've always wondered about this building. It is in Elmsford (Town of Greenburgh), and marked as "Greenburgh Civil Defense Heaquarters". Greenburgh Civil Defense is a divison of Greenburgh Police. I'm not sure how it operates, it s perplexing, I know there is one or two very active members, but I know they maintain a mobile communicaitions truck, a casacade truck, and a lighting truck. Anyways, I wondered if this building is still actively used, and what it was in its former life (if it was used as something prior to CD)
  2. What's the big secret here? Someone must know something they can post.....
  3. Awesome Duane! I like the new Pierce's! Is the new Tiller (I forget the manufacturer) been delivered yet? Or have I lost track?
  4. Can our brothers in Mount Vernon ever catch a break? When will we start seeing the stories in the news about increased staffing, like the story yesterday about Mount Vernon hiring 21 new Police Officers, and announced it at a big press conference on the steps of City Hall. Or that they are increasing pay? Or building NEW fire stations (they're touting a new "downtown development plan tonight, in fact), or even purchasing new equipment. The Mount Vernon FD is full of great guys and great firefighters. They deserve more funding, and better working conditions. Mount Vernon has the money, they just don't appropriate it right. How is it that one of the busiest FD's in Westchester, in terms of OSW's, is also the most neglected? Especially when the Cities next door are like night and day. It's sad, but it all comes down to politics- Mount Vernon politics, as usual.
  5. Why does Stony Hill have to raise funds themselves by holding a car show, etc to buy an ambulance in this day and age? And believe me, from seeing it firsthand they need a new one. Bethel's growing, and I would hope EMS would keep up. http://emtbravo.net/index.php?act=calendar...mp;event_id=149 Anyone know the politics of why the town refused to buy them an ambulance?
  6. This bus is part (or was, with the arrival of the new 132 2007 Freightliner/LDV Mobile Command/Comm Center) of GPD's Civil Defense. I was able to photograph this bus actually yesterday. To my recollection, it's never been used much. Communications Unit 448:http://x635photos.com/displayimage.php?pos=-1037 (Which I think was converted by BOCES Southern Westchester Auto Tech Program and donated to GPD CD) Cascade Unit 446: (Which replaces the old,old big blue truck- anyone remember or have photos of that?) http://x635photos.com/displayimage.php?pos=-1039 Light/Generator Truck 445 (Think this used to be ex-Fairview R-3/U7: http://x635photos.com/displayimage.php?pos=-1040 And I don't know....is C.E.R.T. the modern day version of "Civil Defense"???? http://x635photos.com/displayimage.php?pos=-1035
  7. That's actually a brilliant idea, IMO. It makes sense, people are coming home later and later from work nowadays, and 5'oclock is usually a very busy hour in most households. I remember when Channel 5 used to have the 7PM news. It always made sense, and I was just wondering last week why they dropped it.
  8. ALS A LUXURY???? Are you kidding me? ALS is needed more in Putnam then some areas of Westchester, considering hospital transport times! This should be a signal to Putnam to step up and run their own ALS system, like how they run their own Sherriff's Department, 911, etc. Just another reason EMS shouldn't be handled by "For Profit" companies. We wouldn't contract out for FD or PD, so why EMS???? I don't blame Empire at all, they are just trying to do business. They're not to blame if this venture is losing them money due to the practices in PC, obviously, the county doesn't want to spend the money on ALS that it should, or doesn't use it properly.
  9. According to the Ferrara website, Fairield CT has a 107' RM Ferrara Inferno Ladder under construction. If I'm not mistaken, they recently had a Ferrara engine delivered. Must like it. Anyone have any further?
  10. The new Orion 2007 2nd Generation Hybrid bus: http://www.cptdb.ca/jboic/mtaorion7ng.jpg The one in the photo is for NYC MTA Bus. I guess if Bee-Line decides to expand their hybrid fleet, then we'll be seeing these on the streets of Westchester.
  11. Anyone know if these buses have been delivered or hit the streets of NYC yet?
  12. I guess R.I. State Trooper, err, I mean State Cowboys use Crown Vic's instead of horses, and Air horns instead of lassos. Never know what you're going to enocunter on I-95!
  13. So, I was watching TV Land (cable channel) today, and apparently beginning August 11th they will be airing the reruns of ABC's "Extreme Home Makeover" In the promo ad (that I saw a couple of times today), they use scenes exclusively from the Arena family episode, prominetly featuring Jim and Gina. Neat.
  14. In Hawaii, I noticed something interesting. It's very dark there at night, and a lot of the hydrants can be easily missed, even if you do know your district. They have blue reflectors embedded in the pavement in the middle of the lane by the hydrant. This really enhances nighttime hydrant location.
  15. This is just another reason why it should be a Countywide EMS system. So that staffing and equipment can be evenly and appropritely distributed and logistics managed through a central resource. No need for repetive mutual aid to another district, or the same 5 or 6 people being the backbone of an agency, and especially no more delayed responses. By all agencies working together, and agreeing on a standard response and response time of a fully staffed TRANSPORTING AMBULANCE and, if not ALS already, an ALS unit. We're wasting money and time with band-aid patchwork. We need to all come together to realize that the synergy of working together would greatly improve response and transport times, and make more ambulances available to the county. We need to admit our faults, and pressure our legislators into making a system like this happen. A hybrid, Career-Volunteer system status managment system would work well, especially if all EMS Calls and response logistics were managed and prioritized through a central agency like 60 Control. Mutual Aid is for the 1950's. When you have to call for it routinely, that mean's you can't handle your obligation to your community.
  16. Back hurt a lot and was laying on a heating pad, plus I feel wiped out today. Wife is at work :-(
  17. A new, modern, expanded shop would be great for FDNY, as well as possibly increasing training. I know LA City shops are authorized to handle certain warranty work themselves, and get reimbursed by ALF, Pierce, and Seagrave for it. They are also looking at building a new facility, in which all 4 major companies that provide apparatus to the city (ALF, Pierce, Seagrave, Wheeled Coach) would have space to do warranty work in house with the vendor providing the staffing.
  18. Here's a link to the drawings of Yonkers FD's new command post, which is in pre-construction phase. http://www.mbfindustries.com/about/pdf/A-2...-Yonkers-FD.pdf As it progresses, you'll be able to follow it along with photos on the website of the manufacturer http://www.mbfindustries.com/command/mobile.php Yonkers probaly has one of the best, newest, and most modern fleets in the nation now. This command post will make an awesome additon to their arsenal.
  19. I'm sure many of us know this, and the many other hazards at a fire scene, but this building reminded me. I saw an A/C fall out of a window right in front of my eyes, but by the time I turned around after photographing something else, it was gone. Every A/C unit nowadays comes with a cheap plastic window mounting kit. And many people mount them themselves, and often botch the job. Therefore, they become more of a hazard at a fire scene when the plastic mounts become exposed to even the smallest increase in heat. Some of them are falling out, not even at fires! EMS and PD personell need to be cautious as well, as people lean out the window to "see what's going on", they can easily push the A/C out of the window and onto your head.
  20. Awesome! In the coming weeks I'm sure the staff at D.E.S will introduce you all to the capabilities of this well-thought-out vehicle, which will be an asset to any incident commander and command staff at scenes throughout the county and possibly beyond. For now, here are some spy shots to hold you over: http://www.emtbravophotos.com/SpyShots/FieldCom1.html
  21. How would you handle this hazmat situation? And I found my stolen file cabinets: (Note for the humor impaired my comments are in jest and this is a yearly urban art display in Stamford. It started with painted cows, now I'm not sure what the theme is)
  22. Had the oppurtuinity to shoot a truck I've been after for a while, City Of Norwalk Truck 2, which is a unique Spartan Gladiator/Sutphen TL. I'm sure jcoppola or one of our Norwalk guys could give us the full specs on this truck. I know it has a 100' TL, with a pump, tank, and hose. Not sure on the year. Runs with an officer and 3 firefighters. Truck 3 is also pictured. It is a spare and can go into service as an extra truck when needed. It is ex-Truck 2, replaced by the current Truck 2. Here's the link to the photos: http://www.emtbravophotos.com/SpecFeat/NorwalkTruck2.html
  23. What are these ugly cars? (Sitting at DPW on Magee, presumably being disposed of) Stamfords pre-light Blue scheme?
  24. Here's what was sitting in the bay this afternoon. Looks like an awesome 4x4 Rescue pumper, obviously purchased used from the Fire Company mentioned in the other thread. Looks to be in great shape, and a perfect fit for a department such as Pocantico Hills. I wonder why the Dept. they bought it from got rid of it fairly quickly though? Thanks to grumpyff for the heads-up, BTW. Here are the photos: http://www.emtbravophotos.com/SpyShots/Poc...scueEngine.html SOMEONE HERE MUST KNOW SOMETHING THAT THEY CAN SHARE!! (Plans, Unit Designations, Is it going for a repaint, etc)
