  1. This was posted on Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner's blog. It's interesting this was brought up, as I've noticed several departments not just in Greenburgh that do this.
  2. I managed to stop by Yonkers FD Columbus Day Parade, and get a few quick photos, including their beautifully restored 1952 ALF midmount. Photos are posted on http://www.emtbravo.com Special thanks to RedTruck75!
  3. If you're near a TV right now, turn on COPS (NY WNYW Channel 5 or your local Fox affiliate). It's the 20th anniversary special, and they are showing clips of the most action packed and unique moments of the past twenty years. So far, great episode!! Tune in!
  4. And I have to find out about it by going to PL Customs website?!?!?! Of all the people on here from Briarcliff and the area, no one shared???? Briarcliff's New PL Custom @ PL Custom's Website Any word on what will be done with the old one?
  5. Just curious, does anyone track the stats of aerial ladder deployment vs. structural responses? Say, for example, your Truck company responded to 300 structural alarms in the past 12 months. Of those responses, how many times was the aerial ladder set up and deployed? Do you feel that it's important, even on smoke investigations, etc, to set up the aerial ladder, not only to be proactive, but to keep operators proficient in placing and setting up the aerial at actual incidents, not just drills? I think it would be really interesting to see how many times a truck company actually deploys the aerial for an incident each year.
  6. As many already know, The Concord Hotel in Sullivan County used to be the epicenter of the New York firefighting universe each June for many years as it hosted the annual New York State Chiefs Association Conference and Expo. I was just wondering about it's fate, so I looked it up on Wikipedia, and found this interesting tidbit: Do training oppurtunities like the article below still exist at the hotel? Although it seems like an awful waste of a huge hotel with a great heritage, the large complex must make for some awesome training.
  7. Any chance that it could be saved? I'm sure it's still a useful Engine with life still left in her. There are departments in this Country that would consider it a blessing to be able to obtain this engine at a low/no cost, especially in the Hurricane Katrina/Hurricane Rita affected areas. These areas have been very negelected by the goverment, and lack the proper tools to serve their communties. We here in Westchester are very fortunate to have what we have, and going to these areas is like going to a third world country, IN OUR OWN COUNTRY! Everyone was so quick to want to help immediately after these horrific storms, but it seems many have already forgotten while these communities are still, to this day, completly devastated. To turn this Engine into a dump truck, IMO, is a tremdous waste. It could be used to potentially save more lives in the future. Now, I love Banksville FD and am friends with many of their members, and I don't know anything about the disposition of this engine other then what was mentioned on this thread, but I really hope that this Engine can be saved from all things, a fate as a dump truck, and given to a needy community, or maybe someone else reading this is getting ready to replace apparatus and will think how fortunate they are and how their "old" or "obsolete" piece could once again become very valuable to another community. I know my department is going to be disposing of an Engine soon, that with some minor TLC, would still be very useful for many years. I hope they donate it to a needy community here in the USA, and I will push for that when the time comes.
  8. Thank YOU, Joe! I wish the photos had come out better, I was a little off today as my mind was somewhere else. I'm becoming a lighting snob of sorts. But I'll be back up for a visit when it goes into service, so I'll make it up then. I should mention if it hasn't already that Engine 1 is first due to the Norwalk section of the Merrit Parkway. So, it will have extrication equipment in the rear compartment so they can begin extrication at a pin job until the Rescue can get there. It's also interesting to note that Norwalk Hospital has changed their paint/lettering scheme with the delivery of their fifth Lifeline ambulance, a 2007 Ford E-450 SD/Lifeline Superliner. And I'm a fan of the bell too....I believe Yonkers has bells on their ALF engines if I'm not mistaken......it is a unique sound, and it is good for when going through a crowd or anywhere there is a lot of people where a siren would be overkill.
  9. Video clip of the incident is on YouTube. Insane. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrbFyH4vFWE
  10. I had a chance to photograph this engine this morning, with special thanks to Joe, Scott, and Alan for hooking me up. Photos can be seen on http://www.emtbravo.com Although I am a Norwalk White fan, I must say that this engine looks good in red!! For those who don't know: Norwalk is appox. 45 minutes from NYC, on the Long Island Sound off I-95 in Southern Fairfield County, CT. They serve a very diverse city, with a large mix of income levels. Also, a very large area of diverse residential, commerical, industrial and institutional facilities, as well as several major roadways. They have a really, really great and talented apparatus maintainence staff, that has built several custom apparatus for the department using a mix of aqquired chasis and bodies. They operate from a former transit bus garage opposite the Volk Central Fire Station (Sta 2) across I-95. The spacious facilty houses a large, well equipped shop as well as housing for Norwalk's antiques, and special operations vehicles. As far as the lightbar for the light buffs who noticed, the Federal Signal Aerodynic lightbar is preffered by NFD because, quite frankly, LED's can be a little too bright, and at night can cause vision problems. It's also hard to see the LED's in sunlight, and the combination of LED flashers on the front, rear, and sides with the halogen lightbar has proven effective for them. That's what I am told. And it can be proven, just drive by a new CT State Trooper car with an Whelen LED lightbar, and it's blinding- almost contradicting what a lightbar is supposed to do. Works for them.
  11. According to an article "Westchester Superlatives" in the October 2007 issue of Westchester Magazine: I believe he's been Chief since 1971, and still going strong at the helm of my department. He's hired every career Hartsdale firefighter serving today....some have even retired already!!
  12. So, my wife's cousins, ages 7, 14, and 17 came to town from Colorado with their mother to watch NY Baseball as their combined birthday gifts. After a nighttime Yankees game, they catch a cab back to their hotel room in Manhattan. During the trip, the cab becomes involved in an accident in a sketchy dark neighborhood in the Bronx. The cab driver gets into an intense verbal altercation with the other driver, and eventually, after several minutes, a cop shows up. With the cab being undriveable, the cabbie informs my family that he's unable to get them to their destination. So, here they are, in the middle of some scary South Bronx neighboorhod, and no other cabs are coming by. So, my aunt asks the cop on scene how she could safely get her and her boys back to their hotel room. The cops has major attitude and sounds annoyed and says "It's not my problem". So she asks where she can get another cab. He points and directs her three blocks in another direction, but cautions her that she'll probaly get mugged on the way and might not get a cab for a while. She asks about a bus or subway, but the cop says he doesn't ride the bus or subway, so he doesn't know. So she asks if the cop can take her to a safer location or to the hotel, which wasn't too far away. He again states that it's not his problem, gets into the car, and leaves. The other driver of the vehicle that hit the cab leaves. So, finally, the cab driver calls his cousin, who doesn't speak a word of english, and he comes in his own personal, beaten down station wagon and drives them back to the hotel. I mean, what was wrong with that cop? I know complaints are often filed agasint Police Officers because of bogus things, but this guy definetly deserves some discipline and training on what being a police officer is all about. Leaving 3 kids and a woman from out of town alone in the middle of the Bronx. Real nice guy. Just wondering what others thoughts are on this situation?

  14. Very well done! Suprising the case wasn't solved though. But I guess it truly reflects that not all cases get solved, and some are very tough. Anyways, great job Alicia!

  19. As we all know, Yonkers FD is very fortunate and has and is developing one of the premier Fire-Department USAR operations on the East coast. This is a new delivery to Los Angeles County FD. It's called "Heavy Lift Rescue 36". When put into service, it will be manned by 1 specially trained FF-Apparatus Operator and supplemented by 2 specially trained Engine Company personel where it is quarters. This is a 2006 Western Star/Century 60 Ton Rotating Lift boom. There is a variety of situations this could be used in, and it could also be used to tow apparatus when needed (although Yonkers fleet is brand new!) I think it would be a great supplemental addition for YFD, as well as benefit the surrounding communties. (Los Angeles CITY FD has been running a similar unit, Heavy Rescue 56, for numerous years. The specs on LACoFD's is similar.)
  20. It's a funny coincidence that Ocala is E-One's hometown. I'll be curious to see what exactly happened there.
  21. Found this video for FDNY's Class 01 of 2007. Nicely done! It's 9 minutes long, but gives great insight as to what goes on in FDNY's Probie school. ~LONGER and STRONGER~ The First and ONLY 18 Week Academy Class (After the respectful narration, the video really kicks with video from the class set to Metallica !)
