Thanks for your vigilance, I truly appreciate. However, that photo was used with permission. As far as this situation goes, their is NYS Municipal Law regarding the disposal of municipal equipment. If it is "donated", the City must pass a reolution. If it is put up for sale, then it must be done so at public auction. Think about all the FDNY vehicles that are disposed of, many of which are in far worse shape then this rescue. They are sold at auction, and many are refurbished and continue to serve other departments. This Rescue, if they felt the need to dispose of it, could have made the city a few bucks. This apparatus is worth money in parts taken from the chasis and motor, plus scrap. Not to mention, I'm sure there are some rural departments with no budgets out there that could have put some TLC into this rig and made good use of it. Also, it could have very well been refurbished and put to other use within the city or offered to another department that might have had the money to refurbish it.

Anyone looking foward to seeing the newest installment of the Batman series, "Dark Knight", which opens Friday. I hear Heath Ledger's performance is AMAZING and even described as "frightening" by Jack Nicholson, who played the original Joker. It's very sad that it's one of his last performances...he had a lot of talent.

Found this in my photo collection. I believe Radnor FD in PA posts this in a visible location in the officers areas of the apparatus. Thought others would find it cool...

I, like many on this forum, am an ex-Empress EMS alumni. I still take an interest in their operations to this day, as they are one of the largest EMS providers in the area. Does anyone know what the future holds for their fleet? I know they've gotten a couple of Wheeled Coach vans in the recent past, I know those are used by the "Tac" (BLS-911) and BLS transport units. Do Medics still run out of the 50 series boxes? Are there any plans to order new Type III's??? Also, what is the EMS Supervisor using, and is there any plans for a replacement there?

BEAUTIFUL PHOTO! I loved Ardsley's old Engine 164, and the Young Crusader brand. To build on what mstrang was saying, Ardsley used to have a t-shirt with the theme of the engine going to Monseratt. If anyone has a photo of the back, please post! I know these shirts are hard to find if any still even exist. TR54, do you have that photo of the cover of Firehouse Magazine in 1985 with the Young on the front. And if anyone goes to Monseratt, please bring your camera!

PA Firefighter, looking at it from a civilian standpoint, do you see the show giving the profession a positive image? I mean, many people think tow truck drivers are just that. I think the narration with the emphasis on safety, and professionlism, shows the recovery industry in a good light? stiltow, would love to hear your thoughts.....

Great shots, Tim! Some unique apparatus you caught, especially that Somerville Rescue Squad. One question, is Sleepy Hollow holding onto that ALF Century as an antique? I surely hope so, that really is a beautiful engine that deserces its place in history.

Great shots as always, Mike! My favorite is this shot. You can see the scene, the heavy wrecker, and the helicopter in on shot. http://onthejobny.com/gallery/The-Latest/n...G_0572.jpg.html

As stated above, Hawthorne is selling the current Engine 156, and replacing it with this Quint. A think a Quint in a department that has the traditional daytime manpower shortages many departments face coupled with the increase in daytime population is an excellent idea, if the SOP's are written properly. Let's not forget Hawthorne has numerous high-rise, high risk buildings within their jurisdiction. Westchester Medical Center, IBM, Rosary Hill Hospice, numerous group homes, numerous retail stores, Route 9A, etc etc. They decided to replace 156 with a Quint so that they'd have a tactical advantage of a short wheelbase rearmount straightstick that no one around them really has. Elmsford has a RM Straightstick quint, but it is a bit larger. At the same time, they are able to get a great "trade-in" value for Engine 156 since it really isn't that old, and keep their TL which is in excellent shape. They have made some smart choices. Apparatus choices aren't made by whether a department is career or volunteer, apparatus choices are (ideally) made by what works best for the department and the community they serve.

What is PVAC going to use a mini-attack for? It seems like the pump and tank can be removed real easy. Seems like it would make a nice tactical support/MCI/first response unit.

My bad, the list above is incorrect according to the info below. Here's the official list from FDNY's site: Also, FDNY Dispatchers have it worse. I believe they are limited to living WITHIN the 5 boros. FDNY*EMS does not have any residency requirment that I know of.

Hs anyone been watching this show? I love it. I've always found wreckers and recovery fascinating, and this show clearly demonstrates why. O'Hare Towing is a very impressive operation, kind of like Chicago's version of Stiloski's. Maybe for the next season they could shoot with Stiloski's as well?

Thanks all! 28 was great, it had some downs but mostly provided a foundation for what will be a great 29th year. I can't believe in one year I will be 30 though, lol! Time sure does fly!! BTW, where's "GOYANKEES"? He's always been one of the first to post since the inception of this forum

I read in the thread about the MCI in Port Chester a couple of days ago. It mentioned an "MCI Trailer from Greenburgh PD". I didn't even know Greenburgh PD has an MCI trailer? When did they get this, what are it's capablities, and where is it stored?

AWESOME! I didn't know that Hawthorne was getting a Quint..well I had heard something, but I thought it was going to be an ALF? Was it originally, until ALF hit those financial problems and several month shutdown? I guess this is the new "Ladder 56"? Is it replacing Engine 156? If so, this is the perfect way to do it, IMO. Looks to be very versatile for a first-out structural vehicle, especially with limited crews and in tight areas. I really like the single axle and short wheelbase. This truck appears to be a workhorse, with no uneccesary "frills". I love the LED compartment lighting as well....it really makes things easier to find at night. Is TL-12 going to be replaced as well? I wouldn't think so, since every community and then some that borders Hawthorne already has a TL. Anyways, thanks for the photos!!

Thanks for the photos! I'm sure John will put it to good use...I'm waiting to hear back from him on his exact plans. I know they have several Kenworth's in their fleet. I was wondering why PVFD got rid of what appears to be a tanker in very good condition, but then I realized that their new tanker carries 3,000 gallons, as opposed to the old one above, which only carries 2,000. That extra 1,000 does make a difference, as do the new side chutes. Also, I wonder how much they sold it to Stiloski's for? I'm assuming there must have been some sort of catasatrophic defect with the tank or body, because it seems like it would have been of great use as a backup tanker or even as a tanker for another department. Seems like it was very well maintained and still had some good years left....

There's a new show on the Investigation Discovery Channel (ID) called "Call 911". It's very reminiscent of the old "Rescue 911", except it's major focus is on those who are the true first responders.....the men and women who make sure the right people get to the right place at the right time....dispatchers. Tivo it or make sure you catch an episode....it's an awesome show. http://investigation.discovery.com/tv/call-911/call-911.html

EMS is never going to improve in Westchester anytime soon. There are too many factors holding EMS down, with some being.... -Egos -Pride -"Tradition" -Commercial services with dollar signs in their eyes -Municpalities that aren't even aware where the ambulance comes from when they call 911 -Band aid solutions that cover up the problems, preventing real solutions -Westchester County (County AND REMSCO) not taking steps to lay down the law, or do something to force change and improvement Oh, did I mention egos?

So, if they're not able to repair it, then what would be the plan? Given that Pleasantville is now completly surrounded by TL's, would a regular rear mount stick be an option? Considering the apparatus is past 15 years old, would repairing it be cost effective compared to purchasing a new aerial? Hartsdale's TL-15 is of about the same era that TL-5 was manufactured in. I know a ton of money has been continually dumped into major repairs. Aerialscope's a great product, but it's apparent they have some severe quality control issues.

I'm sure many of you saw this in Baltimore: http://legeros.com/ralwake/photos/2008-07-...t-1-03-mjl.html Photo Credit: Mike Legeros How much and what is the practical application?
