Great shots! Also, the assertive ladder positioning reminds me of Boston......great job by the White Plains FD TL-6 and L-32 apparatus operators!!

I am told that there is a strong possibilty that this may be sold at the next Westchester County surplus auction. 19?? Dodge/Pierce. Appears in excellent condition and would be great for a collector or department in need.....I wish I could!

Since I moved to Round Rock, I've been watching the construction of this modern hybrid apartment/retail/office space and lofts. I was always perplexed by why they would construct this out of wood. The building had fire alarms, and sprinklers, and a standpipe system. The other night, just a few days after it was finished, this brand new complex caught fire. It burned off most of the roof and 4th (top) floor of that section. Firefighters were already in the area when they smelled smoke (on a completly different gas leak call). The fire was in a tough space to get to....between the roofing materials and concealed spaces inside the roof of the structure. Also, the rubber from the roof was melting, and dripping to the floors below, causing additional small fires. Under control in 10 hours, extinguished in 15. About 17 pieces of apparatus, with 72 firefighters from Austin, Georgetown, Pflugerville and Round Rock. Williamson County EMS and Round Rock PD were also on scene. Kudos to the FF's, they had to do a TON of truckwork to get to the fire. Luckily, the building was vacant and, and only some minor injuries to firefighters. It has been determined that sparks from welding caused the fire. I really need to start figuring out how the radio systems work down here, that's the second major fire I could have caught had I known! I'm going to set up the fire alert somehow when I figure it out. Anyways, I did get some aftermath photos.

ny10570, you are absolutely right. They build "disposable" structures nowadays. It was just shocking to me, because I watched this being built since I've been here. I always worried about the wood, but thought that the sprinkers would help to contain everything. There needs to be a code to cover the roof parapet area as well.

Sharp rig, and looks like it will be an excellent addition to the Millwood fleet and district!! I like how it is very compact, and seems to have a lot of storage space. I haven't traditionally been a huge fan of Sutphens, but seeing this Millwood truck and another Sutphen new delivery down here in Texas, I am starting to like some of the things they have to offer, especially this kind of truck. As noted in another thread, Millwood has previously operated a Tele-Squirt. This is their first ladder truck, and Ladder 52 is a brand new, never before assigned designation. Info from "Mfd" From "Millwood VFC New Delivery" thread, Post #7: http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php?showtopic=28327 Millwood Fire District Ladder 52 2008 Sutphen Thanks again to Joe Pinto for keeping my hunger for new apparatus deliveries satisified!! This was the first-due to the call:

From what I understand, everything was functioning correctly. The building was all ready for tenants. The fire alarms did activate, and the sprinklers were below where the fire was.

One of my favorite new deliveries of the year, I'm really excited about this truck....this unit not only looks sharp, but is amazingly equipped. Again, kudos to Yonkers, they are developing USAR resources that not only Yonkers, but the entire region, needs. This unit, as with any Yonkers Special Operations unit, can, and will respond anywhere, anytime they are needed.......keep this resource in mind should you ever need it.....not only do you get the truck and equipment, but highly trained USAR-Firefighters. BTW, the Mack CF/Yonkers Shops Conversion that was the former collapse unit has already been disposed of. I really appreciate all your timely submission, especially this awesome unit. I've been waiting for your photo of this truck since before it was even built...You rock! PHOTO BY AND © OF JOE PINTO

They're building a new gas station/convience store/full service car wash/Subway/breakfast taco place near my house. As many of you know, I always have one of my cameras with me. Today, I noticed this sign posted. You really can't make this stuff up, lol!!!

Because, like all firefighters and police officers, when it comes down to it.....they'll get the job done- no matter where it is.

Wow. This is shocking news to me. And this is also absolutely ridiculous. I remember, a few years back, New Rochelle FD was going to close E-24 and lay off firefighters. I vaguely remember, at the last minute, they were rescued by a grant, politician, or something? Does anyone have details on that, and if a similar rescue could be done for Yonkers FD? And, besides the jobs that are being lost and the demotions, they are basically cutting staff in arson, codes enforcement, safety, and permits, which would increase The Safety battalion is being cut, IN ADDITION to a fire company......I would think it would be a company that has a truck and engine, maybe like Ladder 74, Engine 314, or Ladder 70? The only option I see is for guys who are ready to retire to retire or offer them some sort of buyout, and if their are 6 of them, then 6 of the newest guys get to keep their jobs. This just plain sucks.

At a fire scene, with a few exceptions, should an apparatus operator be required to wear full turnout gear? (i.e. those operating the pump, aerial turntable, etc.....

Recently, in my travels, I noticed a tractor trailer on I-35 with the following message on the cab, near the drivers door... It read: "In Case Of Emergency, Check Sleeping Berth For Additional Drivers" I don't ever remember being taught this, but it was a good reminder. When I looked into this some more, I found that some trucking companies have up to three drivers in the truck rotating so that it can make good time.

I was wondering if there are any agencies that (after calling on scene), note and call patient contact. As some of us know, there's often a big difference in arrival time and patient contact time, and I'm wondering if any agencies track that.

Good luck and be safe!

That's AWESOME! Great photos and summary. Sounds like it was a great course! Croton has some diverse hazards, and it's refreshing to see a department actually train on the capabilties of their apparatus, instead of maintaining the "status quo". I really like the bag into the buck drill.

The price and availabilty of land in the right places, plus I would say 95% of the membership live near the firehouse, so a substation would be a waste of money and probaly not improve response times.

The Bedford Hills Fire District bond issue passed earlier this evening.

Thanks Tim for the interesting history behind this vehicle. BTW, it's now officially up for auction online: http://www.auctionsinternational.com/item....item=0000038851

So I've been following this whole crisis with the auto industry. Extreme commentors are saying GM could shut down as soon as the end of this month. Ford I wold think would be a little sturdier, given their hold on fleet sales. I think they are the most important, since they produce the majority of Police cars and Taxis in the US, as well as ambulance chasis. However, that is a minascule part of their business, and I'm wondering if they'd even continue with a fleet line. With municipal budgets going the way they are, I think fleet sales over the next few years will fall significantly. If these automakers shut down, what would agencies do for IC vehicles and patrol cars? Could Toyota, Hoonda, and others come in to fill in the gap? NUC is already using the Toyota Camry and Toyota Highlander as taxis, but can foreign (although most of their cars are built here) vehicles really put themselves in the same class as the Chevrolet Suburban and Ford Crown Victoria, both vehicles which are now on the chopping block.

I'm not the Chief, but I've been informed about this resource so I hope I can answer your questions.... Read above. This unit will be quartered and respond with Squad 11 staffing, using a Squad 11 Firefighter to drive the collapse rescue when needed. Also, other companies are capable of "picking up" the Collapse Rescue of Squad 11 is unavailable. There's no bureaucracy at all.....the unit will respond when there are lives and properties at stake without delay, as it has in the past. Sure, it has to be approved by the shift commander on duty, but for specialized resources such as this they should have no problem sneding them, unless they have a situation in their city to deal with (even then, they can handle at least 2 collpase incidents at once) They will and have also trained with other departments in their USAR resources, such as neighboring Greenville Fire District. The only "bureaucracy" I see are some IC's that are prejudiced against Yonkers or don't wan't a paid company, with extensive manpower, training, and equipment, coming into their districts for whatever egotistical reason. This unit will save many lives over the course of its lifespan, and make sure your department puts Yonkers Collapse Rescue 1 into it's runnning cards...both career and volunteer!! This truck will respond pretty much anywhere it is needed and requested, Rockland, Putnam, Fairfield, etc should consider this resource..... I hope to shoot this rig, it's equipment, and compartments as soon as I can afford a trip back up to Westchester, lol!!

In this series of photos (posted over the next few days), I will give you a little inside tour of Yonkers FD's new Mobile Command Center. It was hard to shoot the interior since I didn't have an extreme wide angle lens, but I'll do my best to explain. Thanks again to the members of YFD who helped me to ge these shots, it's refreshing to me about a department that's honest and proud of their new deliveries, instead of trying to keep it a "top secret" like some other departments do. Kudos to YFD on their confidence and on another well thought out, equipped, and needed apparatus! I'm sure we'll start seeing it at incidents soon! Does anyone feel that changing a department's name from "Fire Department" to "Fire-Rescue" to reflect the expanded role nowadays of the fire service??
