  1. Did anyone attend today? And/or have photos?
  2. I love how this guy compares the cost of an ambulance ride to an Uber ride. Dude why didn't you RMA and drive her yourself? I understand how the bill can seem high, but the complacent ignorance of this guy as to what goes on inside an ambulance especially for someone who's supposed to be a journalist. I do somewhat agree about the overbilling of the health care costs by all providers because they know they'll only get a certain percentage of that back from insurance companies is a problem but that's the system.

  9. LA City FD covers about 4 million people over 471 square miles. They have a huge fleet including over 162 Engines, 42 trucks, 100 ambulances, and tons of support vehicles, including ARFF trucks and helicopters. This truck (and it's spare) responds to about 30-40 calls where the boom is placed into rescue service each year. It's also on call to tow any disabled apparatus. Additionally, it also provides support services, such as uprighting overturned vehicles and trucks or removing them from cliffs, etc. It's also a good tool for moving debris during large scale emergencies such as earthquakes and other USAR operations.

  11. Rotators were once a towing industry specialty, and now they are becoming an industry standard. As far as FD's, Los Angeles County FD and Washington DC also have a rotator in their fleet, but have been unable to duplicate LAFD's program. I'm actually surprised that they are not more commonplace in the fire service. Stiloski's was one of the first in our area to have a rotator. John has and still owns several 60 and 75 tons. Vincent Towing is another local company that has a 75 ton. The rotator was also brought to fame by the TV Show "Wrecked: Life in the Crash Lane" which was aired on the SPEED Network in 2008-2009, which followed a large heavy truck towing and recovery company as they responded to wrecks along Chicago's numerous highways. Jerr-Dan, a competitor to the industry leader, Miller Industries Century brand, had a rotator on display at FDIC. A friend of mine snapped a photo. He knows who he is and that I'm still upset he didn't bring it home for me LOL. I hope I will see in Harrisburg if I get to go.
  12. Here's a photo of the old Heavy Rescue 56 that I took in 2003: And another:
  13. Just digging around some website files and came across one of my "Photo Hunts" from 2011", in the Boston/Worcester MA metro area, and figured I'd share: http://emtbravo.webspaceforme.net/PhotoHunt/111707.html

  15. The Village in which I live, also where I grew up, has a premium Senior Living Facility in town. It's upscale, and costs several thousand dollars a month to live there. Since it's opened, the local VAC has seen it's call level explode. They go there several times a day. This VAC, which was doing around 300 calls a year, is now doing well above 700. Listening to my scanner, 9 out of every 10 calls is to this facility, which offers various levels of assisted living. As a resident of the Village at the time this facility opened, I thought that something needed to be done to prevent taxing EMS resources, like contracting with Empress or WEMS for private emergencies for the less serious incident. It also taxes Greenburgh ALS, with Car 75 responding to every call. The only upside is everybody at this facility has insurance, and the ambulance corps gets to bill...but that doesn't help with volunteer burnout. I've got to give them credit though, they are a dedicated bunch. The most common call, and the majority of calls, are for falls. How are so many residents who are spending a fortune to live there, and be cared for falling all the time? Many times, speaking to sources, it's due to staff negligence. Now, a component of a good EMS system is elderly hazard reduction education. Although this really doesn't affect me, it annoys me listening to this unnecessary EMS calls for falls that shouldn't have happened in the first place. Ah, it's 1AM and my brain is tired after worrying about a sick friend all day. I don't know where I'm going with this from here...someone pick this up for me. [/rant]
  16. Stiloski's Automotive recently completely rebuilt Goldens Bridge former Rescue 24, a 2001 Spartan/Rescue 1. It was destroyed along with their firehouse in a fire in February of 2014. Rescue 24 was totaled. Stiloski's purchased Rescue 24 as salvage, and completely rebuilt it in house. The roof and interior needed complete replacement, the body needed complete repainting and structural repair, in additional to numerous mechanical items that were destroyed by the heat and smoke. . This truck operates now as an Incident Support unit, supporting Stiloski's two heavy duty 85 ton rotating boom wreckers, as well as other recovery equipment. It carries, amongst other things, chains, cribbing, jacks, high lift air bags, generators, scene lighting, cutting torches, fuel spill containment and cleanup supplies, traffic cones, and other specialized tools. Also to note, Stiloski's loaned the former Tarrytown Engine 80 to GBFD until they can obtain a new rescue. BEFORE: AFTER:
  17. At the World Of Concrete Expo in Las Vegas this week, International debuted their first new heavy duty vocational chassis, the HX series. Can't wait to see fire apparatus and plow trucks on this chassis! Read about it, see photos and videos, at one of my favorite blog websites, DailyDieselDose.com: http://dailydieseldose.com/international-hx/
  18. That is an excellent article. Very well written and informative. Teen driver education is very important, should be taught in high school, but parents and the media need to take more action, as this blog points out. It's also on a blog that integrates homeland security and pop culture, an interesting mix. I'm looking forward to reading more articles.
  19. Congrats to all the new officers in our area who were recently elected to terms from departments that begin in April! If you have them, list 'em.
