http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090318/ap_en_...asha_richardson I didn't know that Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson were Millbrook (Dutchesss County, NY) residents. Thoughts and prayers are with them during this terrible time. I didn't know much about Millbrook until last year. It's quite a wealthy little enclave, I never imagined x129k living in such a Beverly Hills type enviroment.

From what I have heard, the Village Of Fishkill FD has started training to become a collapse unit. They apparently have purchased a special operations truck and are equpping it with collapse rescue stuff. Anyone have further? Also, does anyone have the specs for the new special operations truck?

During an Incident, the Incident Commander, and designated officers who are trained to that level. General management is basically most of the Chiefs, Officers, Firefighters, and Commisioners of these departments woking together to get these grants, arrange training, etc etc. Everyone works together quite nicely, really.

Obviously, you do. This may come as a shocker to you, but people have opinions that differ from yours. That doesn't make them wrong, right, smarter, dumber, etc. Everything is not as black and white as it seems, especially in EMS, and whomever admits they are perfect and haven't ever done anything wrong is a liar. PEOPLE, make mistakes. We, as an EMS community, aren't perfect. Anyone who's been in this business for any length of time knows the shennanigans that go on, and those of us who have been around can name incidents just as ridiculous as this one. This guy went on the news, didn't try to make excuses or cover anything up, and fessed up to what he did. For that I have respect. For the actions that he particpated in, I don't. And, I hope that this provokes changes and there is at least some sort of disciplinary action to mark this action unacepptable. The media has a choice in the way they handle stories. FOX NEWS NY has resorted to this cheap, tabloid style journalism over the past 10 years that has no respect for anyone or anything except ratings. I used to watch Fox News WNYW NY in the 80's and early 90's, when they actually had a great news program. John Roland, Jim Ryan, Dick Oliver, and many other longstanding and respected NYC journalists. Watching how they've changed makes me cringe.

The system designed was a national model and the movement was led by Yonkers FD. It was written about in several publications, and discussed at several national conferences. Many areas around the nation developed similar systems based on this model. Greenville FD was also one of the stronger departments that helped to lead and grow this team. Unfortunately, due to various situations that plague Westchester, the model couldn't be implemented as completly as it was designed, and that's unfortunate to the citizens. Home rule, duplication of resources, and egos are some of the things that, in my opinion, led the challenges that faced the system upon it's start. However, the team is proving itself again and again, most recently during a trench rescue in Eastchester. I strongly believe as this team responds to more and more incidents, they will prove themselves superior, while still being able to maintain firematic coverage in their respective districts. They will respond anywhere they are needed or requested. They will also train and work with any agency that's willing to reciprocate.

This is typical FOX NEWS that people love so much. Scare tatics, fiddling with video clips to make them appear more dramatic, etc. It's cheap, tabloid style television reporting. However, we all must remember with cell phone cameras so prevalent, we're always going to be put on the spot forerver on, no matter what. I find smoking in an emergency vehicle, especially with a Type III ambulance, is not fair to the patient. A lot of patients are sensitive to tobacco odor, and it can irritate some with already sensitive lungs. And it's not professional to have someone, presumably in a marked emergency vehicle in some type of uniform, smoking. I'm not judging people who do, but it's proven to be a deadly habit. That's why many health care organizations, fire departments, EMS agencies, etc, have banned tobacco use completly from their campuses altogether. If you're caught smoking at an EMS agency down here in any situation in anyplace, that's it, you're done. I think, however, that the subject handled the reporter extremly professionally and hoonestly. And, let's all remember, WNYW-Channel 5 FOX NEWS aired this clip to thousands of people- and we're just discussing it here. I'm sure it's going to get picked up on other forums and outlets, such as conversations, as well.

A majority of these guys are maniacs no matter where I drive. One of them managed to park his tractor trailer inside a hotel that was well up and off the highway the other day near where I used to work. It turned out to be a nice tech rescue job, and no one got hurt, but this guy really launched it. I hope this new Federal Bill includes money for commercial vehicle enforcement that includes signage. Many of these guys are from small towns and have no idea how complicated the road system is up there. However, I thought these guys were scary, until I drove in Ireland....now there are some aggresive truck drivers with bigger trucks on roads smaller then the Taconic!!

Nice stop! Grass fires are a routine thing around here, and every department has a "grass truck". Easy to put out, but they move really, really fast- especially with wind.

Although I think Priority Mail is a great value, this doesn't suprise me. Especially as of late, seems like a lot of my magazines and mail are coming later and later, if at all. FULL STORY: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090314/ap_on_...d_late_postcard

OK, I know I'm opening a can of worms here. With all the talk of the County run USAR team, and thoughts about the time it would take to dispatch, assemble, respond, and deploy the team, left me reminsicing of some late night conversations at 60. Why not hire career firefighters to staff the special units of Westchester County DES? That way, the apparatus gets out with trained personel in a timely manner. Like a full time Westchester County USAR and Hazmat Unit. Maybe make previous career firefighter history and training a requirment, as well as Paramedic certification. These firefighters could also be responsible for outreach to departments to train them to first respond and interface with them during emergencies? These same firefighters could also be responsible for getting the various DES resources (gator, foam bank, etc) to scenes, and assist as a manpower squad at larger fire incidents, if needed-which would be. It used to be people were "afraid" to mention this in the volunteer service during the Patrick Kelly era because they were afraid of a Countywide paid FD similar to Baltimore County FD. But if so many can band together for to push for a County USAR team........
