Reading through literature on both products, ths SuperVac chainsaw is just a Dolmar (german built) and appears to be just marketed to the fire service with a cut-depth device tacked on. The Cutters Edge seems to be built and refined specifically for the fire service. I've heard complaints about both, but a lot of the time knowing how to use and maintain the chain saw is intergral with it's reliability. Also, don't forget Stihl make chain saws too: http://www.stihllibrary.com/flash/MS460R/main.swf

And that's the primary reason. Until EMS systems are set up as their own third service and are properly staffed, and FD only dispatched on high priority calls using a triage-dispatch system, things are never going to change. The guys on Engine 10, however, are out most of their shift on medical calls. I do feel for them. It does tax the crews energy, and puts tremendous wear and tear on expensive appratus. Can you imagine the burnout and retention problems volunteer FD's would face if they had to go on every "my toe hurts" call? (Some already do) I must say, having worked in a system with ALS-first response engines, it REALLY does impact patient care in a positive way.

So they won it because Seagrave lost it is what I am reading??
-
But those were donated. and this was spec'd.....
-
Can anyone confirm this yet? If this RUMOR proves true, what chasis will they be on? Ferrara, IMO, is no where close to being a Seagrave, although I do hear some good things about them...Houston uses them. The reason I can see FDNY going with them is the current economy and the price of a Ferrara vs. a Seagrave.....

I've heard of more and more departments going with hose testing companies. These companies professionally test your hose and give you professional records to reference. They have the tools, manpower, and experience to properly and effficiently test hose, and provide you with the needed documentation afterward. IMHO, I think this works better from a logistical and legal standpoint. Many hose test companies will now also offer ground ladder testing at the same time. It also saves your manpower for more important things, such as training (but I guess packing hose is training and a typical firehouse chore)

See, I know it's a long way off, but this is a department where I could see the Ferrara MVP fitting in really nicely.....
-
And another Hahn bites the dust, I guess.......

Excellent info NY10570! Good to hear the FDNY has that protocol as well!

Is there a reason why Spartan won't do it? I know in Hartsdale there was the issue of the officer accidentally snagging the brake, but they solved that in house by putting an easy flip cover over the switch.

Horrible accident, great shots though. That stretch of road is probaly one of the most dangerous in Westchester, and I'm suprised there are not more MVA's. I used to ride my bike to The Little Shack when I lived in Westchester, but getting across 22 was a nightmare. Brings me to another question- does Engine 75 carry NWPFD's tool now? And do they still have the mini rescue?
-
Of course, if Mohegan's getting a pumper, it's going to be a Rescue pumper. I would assume that this would replace the Freightliners?
-
I know Hartsdale Engine 169 and Engine 171 both have them (both twin 2000 Pierce Dash's). I think it's a great idea, but I haven't seen it besides those engines.
-
So is Mohegan looking at new Engines? What was the apparatus that was demo'ed?
-
Hmmm. It's only a 16 hour drive from here. LOL.

City Of New Rochelle, NY New Engine 25 2009 Pierce Arrow XT Pierce Job # 21344 Special thanks to Commisioner Kiernan and the guys working Engine 25 that day for their awesome hospitality!! They are very proud of this engine and love it! (Please note that the remote control top mounted deckgun was not on the engine at the time I was photographing it). This engine also had tons of compartments and storage everywhere, and looking at my photos afterwards, I missed some of them. I missed throwing up the tarp and showing the hose bed, and there are a ton of little compartments all over as mentioned. It seems that every possible inch of space on this engine body was used- no wasted "void spacess".

IMHO, some of Bill's best work ever! The man also has the best timing!

That chasis is awesome! Can't wait to see the final product....the bar is set high for me, especially after seeing the new Engine 25!
-
With the economy the way it is, I'm sure there's going to be a lot of competion this year. Has Westchester funded any new positions?
-
Cool article, it's great to see Croton EMS thriving on it's own. I would think long term plans would be to build a new station with bays on the same property?
