It appears like they were on duty, given the radio mic in the photo. But WPFD is required to get up at 2AM and do fire code compliance checks on all bars and nightclubs in White Plains. The title of this story is completly ridiculous. First of all, THE JOURNAL NEWS took the photos, and from what I understand, their "MetroMix" photographers get in everyones faces to take photos of as many people as they can. When you have uniformed firefighters walk through a crowded bar full of drunk women, they are most likely going to attract attention. The Journal News took the photo, and then printed a story about it. They even acknowleged the firefighters were there doing a compliance check. They had the choice not to publish the photo, and to not publish the story. It's almost like a setup. This is only an issue because the Journal News made it an issue. Absolutely ridiculous. What do they expect when the firefighters walk through a crowded bar full of drunk women? Doesn't look like a pose to me, looks like the firefighter could have been grabbed and suprised by the photo, or maybe he knows the person. WPFD does the best they can to keep these people from suffering from tragic incidents that occur at bars and nightclubs by getting up at 2 in the morning to do these compiance checks. They are keeping the bargoers safe. Where's the article on that???? http://www.lohud.com/article/20091010/NEWS...or-party-photos

I think this is a good point for me to end my involvment in this discussion. The point I was trying to make is no matter what the motive of the city, the firefighters in the City Of White Plains are doing as assigned by the higher ups and being proactive in preventing potential loss of lives in bars and nightclubs that have occured nationwide due to lack of code enforcement. Kudos to WPFD, and I hope the JN does an article highlighting that fact. As far as police issuing tickets and why, that issue is completly irrelevant.

That is the one of the most ridulous statements I've heard in a long time. Are you going on calls around the clock? How many arrests do you make per shift? How many field citations do you issue? Is most of your work traffic related and burgalar alarms? When was your last foot pursuit? Does being on the dive team help justify your primary job? You've admitted that your department issues tickets mainly to generate revenue, not in the interest of public safety. Do you not do proactive patroling because it's "a waste of taxpayers money"?? I guess you also feel fire prevention and education is a waste of money too? Maybe it's because of strict code enforcement that there aren't a lot of fatal fires. They could be sleeping like most other career departments, but the city would rather have the FD do fire code checks at 2AM since they are already on the clock instead of hiring Code Inspectors to do it.

Read something about FDNY equipping certain engines and the high rise units with a "department developed" high rise nozzle in the latest Fire Bell club newsletter. Does anyone have more info on these nozzles??

Last week, I wanted to attend the services for FF Joyce. I, like many, was very shaken up by it and would have liked to have paid my respects. However, the airfare for a last minute ticket is outrageous, and I didn't have the funds. I think that the National Memorial Firefighter Oranization and others should partner with airlines to offer discounted rates for FF's wishing to attend services for the fallen. Same for PD and EMS. My only question would be how to prevent abuse?

Its not about revenue, it is about ensuring the safety of people visiting these establishments. There have been many nightclub tragedies due to overcrowding and/or fires across the nation. WPFD is out there trying to make sure this doesn't happen iin White Plains.

They mostly all bars on Thurs, Fri, and Sat nights and during special events, such as New Years. Regardless of whatever type of event is being held. They could be sleeping in their beds, like most other career firefighters, but they are out doing code enforcement instead. That is PROFESSIONAL. That is their department policy. And the photo's completly innocent. If a firefighter did a "buddy shot" with a male, would anyone even care? Those types of photos are taken all the time. What's next, child molestation because a firefighter was photographed lifting a child into a firetruck? Like we did with this photo, a million things can be assumed. As far as a Cop getting hugged, that's a completly different story. I don't know about NY, but handshakes during intial contact and hugs are strictly forbidden for officer safety reasons. And I figured the writer didn't want to write the story-but the JN or someone else forced him to. It's sad what the Journal News is making it's journalists and photojournalists do. But the newspaper industry is hurting, and I guess they'll sink to whatever level they can to sell papers.

Best wishes to those involved for a speedy recovery......looking at the photos, could've been a lot worse... http://www.officer.com/online/article.jsp?...=1&id=48627

Goose, your post clearly shows that you don't understand the situation. These guys were in a crowded bar, doing compliance checks and code enforcement. There was a MetroMix (Journal News) photographer there, taking photos of everything. It looks to me like the girl grabbed the FF unexpectedly and the photo was taken. If you see the photos on their site, they obviously snap away at everything and anything, and set up a lot of shots....who knows what he told the shot girl to do? It obviously was not a posed, set up shot. If you were on an EMS call in a crowded bar, and some intoxiated female hugged you while trying to get through the crowded enviroment and a photo was taken and published on a media website, would you be calling yourself unprofessional and a bonehead???? Are you really in the position to make those claims? Your unfounded insults, accusing them of being "unprofessional" and "boneheads" makes you look ignorant to the situation. They didn't get too "involved" in the late night scene, the only way they got involved was by doing their jobs-every Thurs, Fri, and Sat night they are required by department policy to go out and do code enforcement in these places to prevent tragedy. White Plains firefighters conduct themselves very professionally in public, and for the newspaper to make an issue of this is dispicable, especially when they BRIEFLY notate in the article what they are there for. As far as your comment regarding this discussion, you obviously don't understand the "central issue", so how can you accuse others of not "hitting" it? I find your post to be very arrogant, you are not an expert on every issue, and you claiming that you have a "problem" with this discussion is absolutely ridiculous and perplexing.

Is there some sort of law in NY that differentiates between a "real" and "fake" psychic????? How does NY certify fortune tellers? http://www.lohud.com/article/20091010/NEWS...d-in-curse-scam

MEMBERS Regarding the online get well cards for the injured Yonkers firefighters, I hope more of the membership will put some more comments. I can't tell you how many times family members have come on here, or people themsevles, or have recieved the thread that is printed and sent to them, and were very grateful, appreciative, and honored by the "online response". Some were even suprised that so many "online" people cared. Many of these cards are for your fellow members of this forum, former members of this forum, or their family members. In a lot of cases, you know these people or have some sort of connection. Please, take a moment, and sign the cards and show your support to your fellow EMTBravo.net members! You don't have to write anything fancy if you don't want, often a simple "Thoughts" or "My Condolences" or "Get Well Soon" will do. It only takes a second...just hit "Post Reply". I'm just trying to build community spirit and goodwill towards fellow members via this forum, and the online cards have proven to be a very succesful and popular thing, and I don't want to see it go by the wayside. I heard about yesterday, which was both a step forward and a devastating day all in one. My heart continues to go out to you, and wish you the best as you continue to progress with your recovery strongly.

If you want to see some action, most departments here in Texas (Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin) all have ride along programs- and you will be sure to see some action. It's worth the trip. And all these departments are still hiring or will be hiring. If you want to actually be a cop and not get bored and work straight through your shift, these are the types of cities to work in.

Bedford Village FD is also currently working with East-West Fire Apparatus Consultants to sepc a new rescue to replace it's very tired mini-rescue. In order to fit into Bedfords antiquated and obsolete firehouse, it will require some modifcations. I hope the existing apparatus floor can take the added weight. Is Bedford Village FD going to ever build a substation, so they can house needed equipment that the current firehouse limits, like a tanker?
-
Word is Pound Ridge has a heavy rescue out to bid, with specs written by East-West and SVI being the preffered manufacturer. This came as a suprise to me.....EW has written specs for their engines before, and they've both been Gowans Knight. GK builds a great product, and I wonder why SVI would be preffered? I hope I'm wrong and GK bids on it and wins. Also, how big is this rescue going to be, and where in Pound Ridge's bays could they house it? If it's the current bay that houses the midi pumper rescue, then it would be a smaller rescue.......

NEFEA is a good dealer as well. I think SVI is a great builder, it's just that I know several comittees who've wanted Gowans-Knight, yet they weren't able to. SVI is an awesome rescue builder- that's their primary business. 6 months-1 year to wait for the start of construction is ridiculous. However, sometimes it can take a while to get a Spartan chasis delivered to the manufactur, and sometimes Spartan waits on Allison transmissions and whatever engine manufacturer, which sometimes can delay production of the chasis itself. Larger builders usually are higher priority for the chasis companies, especially SVI and Crimson, which Spartan owns.

I meant more in the terms of construction and maintainence of an engine, there's a lot more to fabricate, install, calibrate, etc. Like the pump, tank, pump valves and throws, gauges, and now electronic throtle controls and transmissions, etc. Most typically, a rescue is easier to fabricate but on the flip side, equipment, such as SCBA compressors, body design, etc can add to the complicated nature of the rescue. I just meant that's it's far more straightfoward to fabricate and mount a rescue body on a chasis then an engine. Plus, it's easier to make changes on where you're going to put things on a rescue during the final stages then it is an engine. Izzy, I know Gowans Knight is busy, and has had a tough time finding qualified welders and mechanics in recent years. It's none of my business, and I don't know much about theirs, but I'm sure that they could expand just a little more without losing quality. They build a great product, and I like to see local builders flourish-they could stay small, but with a little investment........ Has their quality gone down in recent years, or customer service?? SVI is one of the leaders in building rescue trucks, but is begining to diversify, recently building a pumper for Maui (HI). Who is the local SVI dealer anyways?
