Empress is a company that has rebounded many times before. In fact, it's resisted mergers offers and selling to another company and is still standing. They do what's right the best they can when they can. They've respectfully and honestly gained and earned many contracts, and unfortunetly, some have been stolen due to other shady companies and politics. And they've NEVER trashed other companies employees to make an example to sway their own employees. A lot of people can talk bad about Empress, and complain while they are there, but when you look back at it, they are one of the best commercial EMS companies out there. They are the company responsible for many EMS "firsts" in the County for many years, including the very succesful Westchester EMS conference, EMD, GPS tracking, EMS Special Operations Division (in Westchester), Stat Flight, etc. Many people have gone on to great careers that started at Empress, including mine. And, to this day, Empress is still there for me if I need them. It truly is a family and part of your blood once you've worked there. I know more people that have good memories of Empress then bad. I'd send in that application, and ignore the critics. Who knows what the future holds for Empress, but do everything not to miss out.

In these days of texts, Twitter, Facebook, mass texts, forums (which this site has a strict longstanding policy on), we must remember the impact a single message can have. When a person passes away, particulary in emergency services, and in an unexpected and tragic way, HOLD OFF spreading the news. Let the family be notified in a proper manner first. Let members of the department know first. Who knows, they could be on Facebook at that time-is that really how we want loved ones of the deceased finding out? Let that department officially announce it before you start sending the information. Many times departments are in contact with the family to see how they want the information presented and how/when. And when it does become "official", don't put out the circumstances unless you're an officer from that department or it has officially been made public. Let it go through the official channels- there's a reason for that- and when it has then post your sympathies. See the following link for EMTBravo.net's Policy for Posting Deaths: http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php?showtopic=9889 Sorry to bring up such a morbid issue, but I felt it needed to be said.

My sincere condolences to everyone involved in the tragic situation.

Does anyone know what type of engine that boat uses? It certainly goes from stop to very fast to stop!

So, if I have this right, NYS can audit fire districts financially. However, the OFPC cannot audit or survey fire districts for basic compliance on response and training issues, like NYS-DOH can do with ambulances? And NYS can't set standards for these fire districts involving response? What do these financial audits really mean, and what implication do they have? What is the difference between the state being able to do this and "home rule"? If the state can set laws for fire districts, can't they set staffing, response time, and training laws, etc?

What are they going to do with all of the EMS equipment? I would guess a ambulance that served in Manhattan wouldn't fetch much, and FDNY certainly won't make use of them. Also, I didn't realize St Clares shut down? What happened to that part of the EMS operation, and didn't they have other hospitals and Brooklyn and Queens they served? That Paramedic program was alwats regarded as excellent. I worked with several medics from that program, and all were top notch. Do/did they still give a program, and can't the program be kept in tact somehow by being picked up by another college or hospital?

Caught the show. Repeating multiple times this week on CMT (check local listings or website linked above) Awesome show! The boat is very cool. VERY cool! The one thing, getting on that boat for a primary search and overhaul seemed kinda risky to me. It's wierd they used structural turnout gear for boat fires, I imagine if they were to fall in that would add a lot of weight and possibly drwon them.

See, it's posts like this (amongst many others) that deserve a rep point: http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php?showtopic=36554&view=findpost&p=208682 or an excellent IA such as this one: http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php?showtopic=36578

Their violations are a meanigless joke most of the time.

That's the 911 contract I was thinking of. Thanks.
-
I believe Access briefly had a minor 911 contract in the Fairfield County area way back, but now I believe they don't. If you're a brand new EMT, you're probaly going to have to do some time doing transports, especially nowadays depending on who's hiring. If you're looking for commercial entry level (transports first with chance of 911) in CT, try AMR in Bridgeport or New Haven.

Awesome then!!

It's not so much illegal immigration that's the problem in Maricopa County, it's the human and drug trafficing that poses a HUGE problem.

Wasn't Access at one time co-owned by Stamford and Greenwich EMS? I know they ran out of Stamford EMS HQ for a while...

Not to mention, the aerial seems safer, judging by all those trees that were down/dead or looked like they were about to come down. As far as the aerial, hey, it penetrates the layers underneath nicely!!

Highly reccomended, fill out and employment application and send in a resume with it. Mail it to Human Resources, 722 Nepperhan Ave Yonkers NY 10701. Their website is currently undergoing reconstruction, and just because Empress lost the Mount Vernon contract temporarily doesn't have a major effect on hiring EMT's nor does it mean the company has other big contracts in the works. Depending on where you live, I'd also apply at Mobile Life. They will be expanding significantly in the next year.

The group that owns E-One has bought Horton, AEV, and Leader ambulance. They already own Wheeled Coach. http://www.fireapparatusmagazine.com/fire-apparatus-magazine/articles/772762-Private-equity-firm-increases-its-stake-in-emergency-vehicles Rumor is that Horton (high end custom) and Wheeled Coach (mass market low end) will be left standing, and AEV incorporated into E-One's line.

I guess that there are no more poor and disenfrachised people anymore. How does this affect health care in Manhattan? Are other hospitals able to pick up the slack? What if something else disasterous was to happen in Manhattan? What about "homeland security"? This closing is seriously tragic, after 160 years of excellent care, the community is losing it. Hundreds of healthcare workers, including EMS employees, will have to look for new jobs. Is NY State or City in no position to step in? Is there not a large corporation willing to make some large donations? This needs to be scrutinized thoroughly to see how this came to be- and it's beyond the typical "reimbursment fee" excuse. Gotta love the corporate emphasis and greed that rules healthcare in this country. They really should have built the new facility while they could have....too late now....
