I'm not too in tune with Westchester politicians as I use to be, but I thought the new Mayor (Delfino is gone, right?) was in some legal trouble? Has that been resolved, and he still in power? And when does the city expect to see any tax revenue from all these developments they gave tax breaks to? It's sad, because I finally thought that White Plains FD and PD were starting to head in the right direction....and now because the politicians didn't plan for the future and let power, greed, and corruption run the city, they are now scapegoating the PD and FD unions for the city's mistakes, who really don't make a liveable wage considering the cost of living.

This is a punitive action, and it's disgusting the city is behaving this way. I hope other departments that have vacancies are able to pick up these layed off FF's and PO's, even though I'm sure they are dedicated to White Plains and that's where they want to spend their careers. If the city doesn't immediately rehire those who are laid off, they are going to end up spending the money anyways....when someone dies (hopefully this doesn't happen) and the family sues them for millions due to their negligence in staffing and wins-so either way White Plains will be paying up. BTW, did DPW or any other non essential city agency suffer any hits?

Yonkers FD has a variety of staffing preplans and callback teams to ensure proper staffing of all companies when specialized teams are deployed. For when they go "out of town" to an official disaster, all staffing and overtime are generally paid for by FEMA. Not really. Many Yonkers firefighters are highly trained in hazmat, USAR,collapse, emergency firefighting water supply operations, etc etc, and can supplement the SOC when needed. Also, Yonkers FD, when Rescue 2 (R1's spare) is tied up at an incident, R2 will be staffed so the city isn't down a rescue company should another incident occur.

Actually, you'd be suprised at the people who read this forum. And the post to the "masses" may cause some Medics and others to think. This is why ER nurses need to be involved in call audits as well. I've also noticed that you earn a reputation with ER nurses and MD's. The better the medic you are, the better you are treated and the better you reputation with the hospital and your co-workers. Everyone knows who the lazy medics are, and who come across with an unprofessional image. Much of that is the lack of EMT's and Medics and the compensation. Down here, a Medic in my county STARTS at $60,000 a year and are civil service with 20 year retirement. But that ambulance is ALWAYS shining and the medics ALWAYS look military sharp. And, they are held to HIGH standards in all they do. You get what you pay for. Also, working in a busy city ER as an EMT for several years myself, you really get to know the patient well and see the outcomes. And you really can see the difference a good or bad medic team makes. As an EMS provider, you're not only making an impression on yourself, the ER nurse, and the patient, but also family, bystanders, etc. Sometimes just being nice and respectful to the patient and communicating with the family is all the patient care you need. If you know the person doesn't need a cardiac monitor or whatever else (not drug wise) but the family asks, what's the harm with putting on the monitor? Or starting the IV to save the ER staff time so the patient can be treated quicker? Much of the blame here should be placed on EMS agencies. Many don't (or don't have the funding) for proper quality improvement and insurance on the customer service side. Many don't focus on the patient's experience with the provider, and only have the time/money for reviewing patient care reports as required.

Glad to see you join here, Alex! Can't wait to see more of your photos!! I love that Spartan/Braun!! It really does make a lot of sense as opposed to a conventional EMS chasis, as it is meant to be an emergency vehicle and carry the weight, and it also looks like it has a great turning radius!! Not to meantion looks awesome overall! Thanks again for sharing!

Lake Travis Fire Rescue (Austin, TX) has taken delivery of 2 new identical Spartan-Crimsons and a Pierce Velocity Quint recently. Some of the specs on the engine are really cool, and I will post them as I have time. Engine 604: Quint 605: Engine 603: The back of Engine 604 (same as 603) with an automatic hose bed cover: They are ALS First Response Engine Companies: They use Timberwolve mechanical sirens, which sound just as good and loud as Q's but draw less amps: On the Quint, the aerial can be fine-tuned from the pump panel when being used as an aerial master stream: Not apparatus related, but a bailout simulator at Q605's station: Both Engines have a light tower: Both engines also have remote control deckguns- that actually have a non-wired remote control. Booster reel and hydrant bag-booster reel can flow CAFS Kinda cool.....a compartment for the porta-foam thing....with an auto fill built into the compartment Built in donut roll holder on each side of the pump panel: The engineer has pull out trays with all of the fittings, tools, etc... Pull out drawer with some forcible entry equipment: Drivers side: CAFS at the flip of a switch for any attack discharge: Quint 605: Engine SCBA/O2 bottle storage (3 other similar wheelwell compartments on engine) Officers seat on the Engine: All foward facing seats on the Engine: Holomatro Extrication Equipment:

EMS via double Medic ALS Ambulances is provided by Austin-Travis County EMS (county based municpal EMS system) and Lake Travis Fire Rescue is considered a first response agency. Depending on staffing, they can run ALS or BLS. Often, they'll get ALS care started immediately if needed, however response times for EMS are pretty quick.

Really? This is an insult to EMS, and sends the wrong PR message. Let him letter up a box truck or something. I'd rather seem someone protesting the lack of EMS funding or attention by the Federal Government in this new health plan.

What apparatus was planned for this substation? I know Brewster's headquarters is cramped, were they looking to relocate some appararus here? $3.25 million for a substation is a lot of money. Was new apparatus included in that figure? If it's just a substation, wouldn't a prefab metal structure (which have come a long way) serve the purpose at a lower cost?

COngrats Joe. You've worked hard for this and deserve it. Best of luck in your new position.
