Personally, I think every fire station should have a pickup truck for utility use, fancy or plain. Some departments already do this, and I'm glad to see Purchase is another one. Is that a plow on the front? (This is just a periodic reminder and no one has done so on this thread or any others currently, but we want to keep the rule current-remember, this thread is not to question or comment on the need for the truck)

OK, I screwed up what I was saying. Here is the official High Rise SOP from LAFD's Operations Manual (in .pdf format): http://www.lafdtraining.org/ists/books/bk100v0107.pdf Chapter 7 goes into intense detail on elevator operations.

I believe there is a protocol to not use elevators during a fire until the exact location of the fire and where it has spread is initially determined.

They look GREAT! They needed a makeover. Great shots too, Rob. Thanks for sharing! 20Y2, thanks for the info....who is making the new ESU truck?

Wheeled Coach. You can always ID a Wheeled Coach by the "corner cap lights" on the module.

I'm glad you're OK! If you need anything at all, please let me know 24/7/365) (And that photo is a magazine cover! Looks like he got excellent care by the book!)

+1 rep for FFBlaser for starting a good topic.... Usually, almost always, another car stops the wrong way driver. I think that areas that have traffic manqagement centers, should coordinate with 911 and get messages up on the electronic billboards as soon as possible. They should also be actively monitoring traffic and have some sort of wrong direction detector on the entrance and exit ramps...maybe ever a barricade arm. However, that doesn't account for the people who do it intentionally. Or in some areas of the country, they don't maintain highways very well and signage may be overlooked, poorly lit, blocked or missing complelty (cough, Saw Mill) and someone not familiar with the area could potentially be misled to the wrong direction. It takes a lot of ignorance, but if you are a competent driver you should realize almost immediately. Oh yes, and MUCH tougher DUI laws and more money for DUI and nighttime traffic enforcement nationwide.

It's funny Phoenix were the ones to develop these operating guidelines.......because last time I was there, Phoneix was mostly desert, and I didn't see any climable trees or forests!

As some of you may know, I like the show "Howe And Howe Tech" on the Discovery Channel, as I wrote about in this thread: http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php?showtopic=35230 In the Season 2 premiere last night, they came up with an idea for a firefighting robot, named Thermite. They made it clear that this was for scouting, industrial fires, and other fires too dangerous for a firefighter to go into. The show will chronicle the construction, testing, and application of the robot. They also pointed out that bomb squads and other organazations use robots for dangerous situations, and this is just meant to be another tool for a firefighter to use, and not to replace firefighters. If you're lucky enough to have a vent, use that. Normal, consistent ventilation and rapid transport works best. That, if at an appropriate distance, is a good reason to use an helicopter because most carry vents. ny10570 hit the nail on the head-but as we all know, the academic community changes things all the time for us with "studies". In Texas, some systems carry Manitol or some other experimental drug which is escaping me right now.

As we continue to bring you more photo features from EMTBravo.com's "Attic", here is a compilation of 75 photos that I took in 2005 and featured it on EMTBravo.com It was one of the best and most memorable years of my life so far-I had no idea how much change the future would hold-both good and bad. A lot of you are even in the photos. Makes me sad to look at some photos, and happy to look at others. And for some of them, both. All photos taken by me. x635's Favorite Photos Of 2005 Page 1: http://www.emtbravo.com/x635Favorite2005/x635051.php And Page 2: http://www.emtbravo.com/x635Favorite2005/x635052.php -Seth Granville

Did anyone catch "Howe & Howe Tech" on the Discovery Channel last night? (Reruns airing this week-check local listings) http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/howe-and-howe-tech/howe-and-howe-tech.html They fabricate armored vehicles for military and law enforcement and mining use. In the first episode, they were building a prototype to their "Badger" vehicle, a mini-armored tank that can fit thru a house with an officer inside the tank. It also showed it undergoing explosives and ballistic testing. Pretty cool show so far.

Didn't Anderson Cooper buy their Manhattan station and turned it into a residence? Also, what happened to their apparatus and equipment? I know the benefits of the Fire Patrol, but agree with ny10570. These companies were primarily formed by the insurance companies to reduce their losses, saving them and their customers money. They've also saved priceless artifacts and some valuable NYC historical structures. However, now they are going to be saving the wealthy investors of these insurance companies money, so they can go out sailing or play tennis at their mansions on the blood, tears, and sweat of the fire patrol. If they do get the legislation passed, and if they do get funding, I would imagine there is still a ton to be worked out. I still strongly think the best option would be to rally the public and lobby the insurance industry for funding. But, with FDNY closing companies, what is more valuable- material items or human lives? Will the grants and donations they get take away from other existing agencies who may need these funds to staff apparatus or replace equipment? Kudos for their effort, but I don't think it's going to be succesful unless they can get millions annually from the insurance industry I don't see this being viable unless they can succesfully fund multiple companies, because their efforts depend on how fast they can respond. The only way I can see this working long term besides insurance company funding, is to sell "subscriptions" to it's services, and billing the insurance companies for their work.

It's these idiots who ruin employers interfering with employees using social media. FULL ARTICLE: http://www.lohud.com/article/20101211/NEWS05/312110022/Ex-EMT-admits-posting-corpse-photo-on-Facebook?GID=Va1cI5Zs1boA85aXx28Vy7POp9QgK1KWTOwEVcpucrA%3D

WOW! Awesome shots!

Very innovative. I love that idea, especially as an apparatus operator when positioning the aerial in the dark. Thanks for bringing this to our attention George! I guess we'll find out how durable they are when a brave aerial operator puts their aerial through a window to vent or to knock down a parapet (if that's still even OK to do), lol. It looks like if these lights were damaged, the aerial probaly would be too.

Thank you Connor for introducing yourself, and for the kind words about the site. I really appreciate it.

Stuff like that make me wonder what we pay taxes for. I know the NYS Thruway will bill motorists insurance companies for propery damage caused by an MVA, which I can sort of understand. But to bill the motorist directly? Even if they just bill the insurance companies, it means auto rates are going to go up for people that live or drive in New York City. Do they charge for trash pickup? Some of these ways these politicans are coming up with to fund Fire, PD, and EMS are going to kill people by fear alone. No one should have to hesitate to call 911 to consider if they can afford it or not.

Here is the bill itself: http://dpc.senate.gov/dpcdoc.cfm?doc_name=lb-111-2-181 9/11 is still killing people. Absolutely disgusting that these politicians put politics and this game they are seemingly enjoy playing in Washington and screwing over the people who put them in office. Since it takes being a multi millionare to have a signifcant role in US Government, all these politicians are not in tune with the people they serve. I also blame part of society, the citizens need to stand up for what they believe in. I don't think you're going to ever see massive rallies about this. People don't care anymore about the governemnt because come election time, you just vote for the best of the worst. People statiscally care more about getting Betty White to host Saturday Night Live, or what the latest celebrity is doing, then their own government- until something affects them personally. And, since the press can skew stories any way they wish, I don't think people are getting the correct information. C'mon, if you had the outpouring of support there was after 9/11, this bill would have been easily passed. Now, people just have forgotten the sacrifices. As far as the political parties, all I see is the Republicans opposing everything the Democrats do, just as a political game. I also think this propaganda about President Obama is hurting things, and whatever you may think, he is the commander in chief. Republicans who are "getting back at him" out of spite and refusing to work with the Oval Office are causing a lot more problems. Also, with all the money we've spent paying for this war overseas, we could have easily made sure EVERY responder to 9/11 was taken care of. They were the first victims. I guess they forget that THEY WORK FOR US!

I know this is kind of a taboo subject, and not one many of us like to think about. Organ Donation. Are you signed up to donate your organs properly (signed up with an agency, not just signing your drivers license), and does your family know your wishes? We are lifesavers, and god forbid our life is taken from us before our time, we have the chance to save another life still, even a few other lives. We won't need them anymore. What good would they do decaying in the ground when somebody can be given a new chance at life with it?
