  2. I'm not a gun control person, as I believe people will get guns to use no matter what. All gun control does right now is keep guns out of people who use them properly hands. There is no federal funding to get guns away from nutjobs and enforce the "laws". Full disclosure, my father owned a business that sold guns and ammunition, so a lot of my childhood was paid for with that money. However, these shootings are getting crazier and crazier.I do feel gun control laws need to be stricter, and more funding and staffing to go with it. This is getting to be domestic terrorism, and this anti-government movement is growing larger and larger. Politicians are now going to seriously have to fear for their safety, as I'm sure there are people contemplating doing the same. To be able to protect politicans, we're going to have to spend millions of dollars. And they won't even be allowed to go out in public. FULL STORY: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_congresswoman_shot
  3. I just wanted to make a simple point to make about firefighter fitness. Whether you are a career firefighter or volunteer firefighter, would you trust the people you are going into the building with with your life? Are they physically fit enough to drag you out, if need be? Are you physically fit enough to be dragged out easily? Take that, and think of health and fitness. We all work as a team. We should all excercise, eat right, get regular REAL physicals and stress tests as a team. We should encourage one another. Also, if CPAT is the standard for career firefighters to start the academy, it should also be the standard for volunteer firefighters who are interior as well. Because, again, volunteers perform the same job, and should be on the same level with fitness and health. Next time you're enroute to a call, think about the guy (or gal) next to you. Can they save your life, and can you save theirs? How can we take care of others if we can't take care of each other?

  5. I don't what the whole story was, but the bus broken down or unable to move...looks like a tight street?
  6. Any in-service photos yet?

  8. Kind of sparked my mind after seeing this list: http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/111745/things-babies-born-in-2011-will-never-know?mod=family-kids_parents What Fire, EMS, Police or other emergency items and/or terminologydo you think will be obsolete when the babies of 2011 grow up and start to replace us? I think the Plectron, Minitor, Siren, and other alerting systems for volunteers will be obsolete, and everything will go to a smart phone. That's actually happening now, but I think they'll never know what that is, and every phone will be "smart" then.
  9. Members, Two new things with your member profile screen: 1. You can now see who gave you a reputation point, for which topic, and the time they gave it to you. Simply click on the "Reputation" tab in your profile, as pictured below To see how to rep a member for a great post, photo, or Incident Alert, click on the link to see the thread on how to give a rep point: 2. On your profile screen, when clicked, the default tab will be "About Me" instead of status updates imported from Facebook, which really wasn't a neccesary or much used feature. The "About Me" screen will allow you to introduce yourself to anyone who visits your profile. If you have any questions, feel free to post on this thread or contact me, seth@emtbravo.com Seth
  10. Just wondering what goes through your head while you're responding to a working fire during a winter storm? I know there are a lot more components during a snowstorm to apparatus response protocol, size up, apparatus positioning, etc. What extra thoughts and plans do you take with you when responding?
  11. My thoughts and prayers. North Tarrytown was a MUCH different place then it is now, and under his watch he kept things in order.
  12. It's GREAT to have you back! I love seeing the dedicated men and women of Dutchess County at work, and as they say, a photo says a million words. With your understanding of the scene and photography, your photos really come out amazing, and really reflect the incident.
  13. As always, Eli- AWESOME photos! You've got a real talent, and hope one day you'll compile your work into a book. Thanks for sharing them with us here!
  14. Firefighter health and safety funding should always be purused. And it doesn't cost a dime to go for a run, or make healthy choices at mealtimes. It doesn't make sense that you can't stay in shape just because of the economy. And, you shouldn't be doing it for financial incentive, anyways-unless you want to keep your job, in extreme cases.
  15. You're absolutely correct. CPAT is an entrance exam to select the best canidate. I forgot to add to my intial post that once you're in (as a career firefighter), after the academy, some stop staying in shape or neglect their health. There should be some sort of incentive or requirment to stay in shape using benchmarks for the duration of their career. However, there should be group motivation and more importantly personal motivation to stay fit and healthy, and encourage everyone around you to do the same. Volunteers have to perform the same exact tasks career firefighters, and the human body is no different. The point is, career or volunteer, your life might depend on someone who can't save yours.
  16. I absolutely agree with you. It would. CPAT is designed for the best canidate selection. BUT, there should be some sort of basic physical ability testing as part of Firefighter Basic. It should also be part of the class. Age shouldn't matter. Things like reibursment for gym membership and a department personal trainer, as well as promoting a healthy enviroment, can be done in a volunteer department. And volunteers can depend on each other.....meet on a Saturday morning for a group jog, cook healthy meals at the firehouse, etc.
  17. Another great job by the court system, excellent timing! [/sarcasm]. Anyway, two words. Death penalty. http://www.lohud.com/article/20110103/NEWS02/101030321/Yonkers-man-to-go-on-trial-in-death-of-firefighter
  18. Just read the article. What great people the Joyce family are. I don't know if I could have their strength. I'm glad they are keeping his memory alive with positive things like his memorial foundation, and not negative things like this. Also, we shouldn't forget about the others injured, and how this guy has made them suffer for the rest of their lives. On another note..... 20 years to life? Isn't there such a thing as life without parole in NY? Or did he just cowardly take a plea deal because he was scared and knew he wasn't going to get out of it with a trial. Or maybe he got word or observed how NO ONE wrongs a Yonkers Firefighter and gets away with it.
  19. That's great news-thanks for the update. I bet it was the overwhelming presence of Yonkers FD and the Joyce family, and he not realizing that he can't get out of it. Only wish he had done it sooner to avoid the trial completly. Hopefully, he'll get life but I doubt more.
  20. Poking around some more in the EMTBravo Attic, I found these two photo sets from Noroton Heights FD in Noroton Heights, CT (just east of Stamford). Noroton Heights can be reffered to as the "Mack Mecca", and the photos do a great job of expaining why. Be sure to read the text. Noroton Heights Fleet: http://www.emtbravo.com/NorotonHeights/index.html And, also be sure to check out the (then) new Rescue Engine 23, which was a former FDNY BOT Engine: http://www.emtbravo.com/NorotonHeights/NorotonBOT.html Hope you guys are enjoying these "From The Attic" reruns, it takes some work to put them back online. Seth
  21. When it's 100 degrees in August, I just remind myself of stuff like this......
  22. Why? They are prepared for other "once in a lifetime" disasters, why not a weather related event? The vehicles could not have benefitted from snow chains or having some 4x4 ambulances? The FD has specialized units to respond to just about everything when it comes to fire and rescue. So, I don't think enhancements to the EMS fleet for a winter storm would be a waste of money.
  23. Wow, Tappan has an awesome fleet of CF's. BUT, has Tappan taken delivery of "new" Mack CF's? NHFD has taken a Mack CF snorkle and made it a Mack CF tanker, a tanker and made it a Quint, a former FDNY BOT Engine that was near mint and made it a rescue Engine, etc? A lot of work done in house. These Mack CF's are in basically brand new condition when repurposed and (re)delivered, and nobody has the talent of Scott Plank and NHFD to do this. They have a modern fleet of Mack CF's. That's what makes their fleet unique.
  24. Very interesting concept. I'm just suprised no one from the Fire Department was appointed, unless not noted in the article. http://www.lohud.com/article/20110105/NEWS02/101050345/Port-Chester-recruits-9-to-promote-safe-housing
  25. So, this is going to be the city's action plan? Spend time and energy finding people to blame it on, and firing them, so it look's like they are "doing something". I hate how the City is demonizing those who were actually "in the trenches". I don't know what the circumstances were or if this Chief deserved to be fired, but I'd rather be reading the headline "NYC Buys Snow Chains For Entire Ambulance Fleet" or "NYC To Order 4x4 Ambulances".
