Maybe someone that could fight the board on all the nonsense they create, especially as of late, and let the Fire Chief be a Fire Chief, and not spend a majority of his time having to fight with the Village Board. I really don't know what the "Board Of Wardens" is....maybe someone could explain? Tarrytown FD is a department rich in pride and tradition. However, they've also been rich in conterversy-especially when the Village Board is concerned. If it's not one thing with Tarrytown FD, it's something else, and I'm starting to see where the root of the problem is. Tarrytown is slowly evolving from a working man's town that it once was- it's now a wealthy Westchester village. In order for the department to evolve, somebody needs to step in and sort through everything. Maybe a consultant would help identify issues and how to resolve them. But the FD hired a apparatus architect-consultant to come up with specs for an engine, and presented their results...and the Village Board did what they wanted anyways and took it upon themselves to decide what was and wasn't needed for the new engine. Someone needs to do something, or the Village Board is going to find itself without a FD,PD, or DPW.

We had the honor of Jeff Cool being a guest at our Westchester County Career Fire Chiefs graduation on December 15,2005. Jody Carrol brought him by a few days before, where we got to interface with him on a more personal level. He is a strong, awesome guy and his speech and being able to put a face with what happened to him will last a lifetime. Great video. +1

Interesting. Maybe a better title/position be "Administrator". I know someone who would be perfect for that spot.

It's not only cancer. Severe PTSD and suicide is often a cause not thought about.

This happens every day in Westchester, due to poor staffing in some career departments, and difficulty staffing volunteer departments during the weekday hours. And because everyone wants in on the action. Mutual aid is relied on for your everyday bread and butter fires that shouldn't need a mutual aid response. I haven't heard anything recently (maybe that's a good thing?), but this is basically what Mount Vernon has done in the past. Used mutual aid as an excuse not to properly staff or equip their department. As for Camden, that's one department that sees a lot of action. Like in Westchester, taxpayers are going to have to sacrifice their own fire protection and also pay for fire protection from another community. Nobody outright says it...yet...but it does occur.

Audio from the event: It seems that there has been an increase in gas line explosions in the recent year. I don't know if people aren't calling 811, utility workers aren't getting trained or funded to detect these things (if possible), or the infastructure is just aging...

Pretty dramtic video.Dangerous situation for all involved. I would say someone should go to the top of the hill and warn drivers, but I would think even going near that hill would be dangerous.

But, isn't Stamford just the opposite? Didn't the "big 5" towns in Stamford consolidate?

Yes! I was just about to suggest that. How about 6th Street, Austin TX?

It's good to see FDNY expanding it's marine operations, especially with all the economic turmoil in the budget. As stated though, I guess a majority of the money comes from grants.

I see many large machines and large parts of machines on the back of trucks up and down I-35. However, this one was parked at a safety rest area and sparked my curiosity? What is this machine, and what does it do? It's bug and red, so I was thinking it may be firefighting related. I know it's owned by Haliburton, and it's most likely going to the Port Of Galveston to be shipped overseas.

I forgot to add, street medicine is an art, not a science...and cannot be succesful if reading from a "recipe card".

I was reading an article about chainsaw operation in the wintertime in "Popular Mechanics" recently. It detailed steps to take to make chainsaw operation in the winter easier. Does any department on here "winterize" their saws? And do you feel it is neccasary to gain peak performance? Also, after a fire with moderate to heavy usage, what are the steps you take to inspect and clean the chainsaw or K-12?

I never like the show anyway. It's way out there and doesn't portray firefighters in a good light....plus you could swap firefighters with any other profession in this show. Has anyone watched an episode or two of the TV show "Speeders", on "TruTV". http://www.trutv.com/shows/speeders/index.html I don't know how this show can be real, or what department would let it's officers participate in this. They not only mock the officer, they mock the traffic law. I know this network puts out scripted shows they try to pass over as real, like "Operation Repo", but I doubt they would name an officer and a department for this show. They've had departmetns from NY, IL, CA, NJ, etc featured.

Even if you don't have an interest in FDNY, I feel it's one of the best training publication out there. Each month, it has several great articles any firefighter could learn from. Good heads up.

Horrible tragedy. Thoughts and prayers.

Unless you can treat the underlying cause, or, in the rare case, witness it, there's little chance you're going to revive a cardiac arrest patient. I see good things with the core cooling, and with the CPR machines to do effective compressions. Face it, it's nearly impossible to do effective compressions en route. And it's always a lot easier to backboard the patient anyways to secure the airway better and get more effective compressions. The one hand thing is being promoted ONLY so the public does get whatever oxygenated blood flowing until others can get there, without the public having to be afraid they have to do mouth to mouth. As for getting shocked during CPR, we're lucky that the manual paddles and conductive gel are a thing of the past.....

Does Rescue 5 have the lowest amount of volume as compared to the others? Maybe it's going to Staten Island first to work out any "kinks"? Does FDNY do that kinda stuff, or is R-5 just due?

Um, this thread is about answering StepJams's questions so he can build an accurate replica of the current Yonkers FD Rescue One. Please don't hijack this thread-this member's talent deserves it's own showcase. All non related thread has been split into it's own thread entitled "Yonkers Rescue 1 Numbers" in the Local Forums->Westchester section. http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php/topic/40111-yonkers-rescue-1-numbers/page__pid__226783#entry226783

This is my issue: See this article, this is the PBA's concern: http://tarrytown.patch.com/articles/tarrytown-board-of-trustees-roundup-01042011 And are going after other village unions: There's also a quote from him in the article publicly questioning the fire department's ability to operate a fire hydrant. (Quotes from the Tarrytown Patch, full article from links above)

Interesting. I guess this would fit in their lineup between a Furion and a more traditional looking chasis. http://www.spartanchassis.com/
