That's awesome news! Are they required to match the grant?

What is actually the solution to this "epedemic"? I've racked my brain, and there's a variety of factors that don't make it possible to have a concrete single solution, especially since most of these perps have nothing to lose. Figuring out how to get more guns out of the hands of criminals is one way, especially mental health tracking and spontaneous checks on persons that have been in illegal possesion of firearms before. That's a LOOOONG term venture, but could have some potential. I also think federal funding needs to be beefed up for law enforcement, both proactive and reactive. We talk and train for "Homeland Security", and play with Haz Mat tents and practice and equip for WMD's, something that may never be needed, but this is real "Homeland Security" and I think more needs to be diverted from equipping and training Police Officers in Iraq and Afganistan and pull that funding over here. Major cities also need to have ESU type units on the street, so that specialized tatics and equipment are always available immediately, along with the trained officers. An ESU Unit should become commonplace. I know a couple of cities that are currently strongly studying the ESU concept. God bless and RIP for all the officers that have been murdered in the past 24 days.

If Paramedics are being promoted to firefighters, why not take advantage of that skillset, and run ALS or ALS Assesment Engines? Also, is FDNY still running 8 hour tours exclusively? And what is the starting pay for a EMT and a Paramedic?

Let us not forget today is the fifth annivesary of "Black Sunday" in NYC, one of many tragedies in FDNY history and one of the saddest in modern times. 6 firefighters fighting a fire at a tenament on E 178th St in the Bronx had to bail out the fourth story window of a illegally subdivided apartment when flames trapped them. Maydays are transmitted, and audio of the fire is found with a Google search, but there wasn't any time and nothing anyone on the scene could have done fast enough. This brought national attention for the need for "bailout" equipment and training, as well as better code enforcement for these types of buildings. Lt. Curtis Meyran and Firefighter John Bellew both gave their lives that day. Firefighters Brendan Cawley, Eugene Stolowski, Jeffrey Cool and Joseph DiBernardo all survived, but with severe injuries. Later that same day, at another fire, Firefighter Richard Sclafani from Ladder 103 was killed after being knocked unconscious, without his mask, as his brothers searched for him in a smoky basement fire in the East New York section of Brooklyn. God bless, thoughts and prayers on the anniversary of this terrible incident. Hopefully, lessons learned were applied and have already saved firefighters lives. Excellent article about the fire: http://nymag.com/news/features/26574/

Eng51ine got some great shots from the Purchase fire when it was 11 degrees out before his batteries ran out. I've always wondered, does the cold weather drain a camera battery faster? When it's cold here, my batteries seem to have a shorter cycle then in summer. Thankfully, I'm neurotic and carry multiple battery packs, but I've always been curious.

Thanks for the info. Great placement of the truck companies. Looks like between TL-53 and L-31, they had plenty of room to manuver the aerials and make great use of them...as well as ground ladders. I couldn't handle 11 degrees anymore, hope everyone has dethawed!

The City of Newark, NJ has ordered 3 Ferrara engines.

Don't forget to "Rep" your fellow members for great posts, photos, and Incident Alerts. Let them know you like the content they contributed to our community!! In case you're wondering how to do so, all you have to do is hit that green "+" icon. And it will show in their profile and post sidebar info: It WILL show who repped you. Again, let your fellow members know you like the content they contributed to our community!! (If you're wondering why you can't find it on this post, it's because I can't be repped nor can any other EMTBravo team member)

I should add, there is no limit to how many reps you can give per day.

I did think ahead. If you go in there individually, they can't charge a automatic tip if you come in individually. I think that if there were enough people inside the bar affected by 9/11 and offended by the comments, which I understand there were, that lends some credibility to the issue. the least the bartender could do was immediately apologize and offer a free appetizer or something, regardless of his opinion. The manager could have been sympathetic about it. It's a business, and customers were offended. I don't think this is a 9/11 issue, this is a customer service issue. It's trivia night, which is often fun at bars. Some poke fun at some current events, but there's certain boundaries. As for the Freedom Tower not being built that some brought up and possibly what the bartender was eluding to, that's just ridiculous. We're not going to rebuild and recover after a terrorist attack because we are afraid of another one? NYC will lose billions, and Lower Manhattan will suffer even more economically because we are afraid? Didn't we start a war where thousands more were killed and cost us and future generations billions upon billions of our own tax money so this supposedly won't happen again? What is the Homeland Security Department for? But that's a whole 'nother topic. I live in a city where last March an American citizen disgruntled with the IRS flew his small plane into a moderate sized office building to get revenge with the IRS. Thankfully, out of the hundred or so people in the building, everyone got out unijured except for one gentleman and of course the pilot. The buidling was salvegable, and is already rebuilt. The shooting of the US Congresswomen in Tuscon. These type of incidents proves anything can happen anywhere in this country from any type of people, and the best we can do is live our lives and be prepared for anything.

Members, Two new things with your member profile screen: 1. You can now see who gave you a reputation point, for which topic, and the time they gave it to you. Simply click on the "Reputation" tab in your profile, as pictured below To see how to rep a member for a great post, photo, or Incident Alert, see the first post in this thread. 2. On your profile screen, when clicked, the default tab will be "About Me" instead of status updates imported from Facebook, which really wasn't a neccesary or much used feature. The "About Me" screen will allow you to introduce yourself to anyone who visits your profile. If you have any questions, feel free to post on this thread or contact me, seth@emtbravo.com Seth

According to Fairview FD's Official Facebook page, Chief Robert Mauro is set to retire on January 31st, 2011. He's been serving as a career firefighter in Fairview for 46 years, and has been Chief since 1977. The department and district has seen a lot of growth and positive change during his tenure. Congrats to Chief Mauro on his long deserved retirement!

That's awesome news for Ghana! It's a national fire brigade, going from 136 stations to 202 stations. I know they've had their difficulties the past few years with the country growing and their fire apparatus fleet not being able to keep up with demaand. http://news.myjoyonline.com/news/200906/30837.asp Here's their website: http://www.ghanafireandrescue.org/ Hopefully, this will be a shot in the arm for the economy of Pierce/Oshkosh, it's employees, and the local economy. I wonder where these will all be built, in the Appleton, WI or FL plant? Pierce is even opening a dealer there. It's interesting they are going with American apparatus and not a more major international manfacturer. Cool that they are buying Jerr-Dann wreckers and Oshkosh service vehicles as well for the new fleet.

I think Finnegans is the only real bar or "pub" in Yorktown, if I'm not mistaken? Obviously, it was a fun place to go. Has anyone contacted the OWNER of this establishment to let him/her know about his bartender's and manager's comments and inaction? It's called the Freedom Tower, I assume, to represent the freedoms an American citizen is privledged to have. One of those is free spech. However, free speech comes with responsibilty and consequences. A good bartender knows his clientele, and obviously this one didn't. I say go in there, in mass, order drinks and food from him, keep him really busy, and have everyone tell him his tip is going to a 9/11 charity. Maybe that will send the strongest message to him.

Looks like they are starting to put some effort into designing commercial trucks again...... 2011 Freightliner.....I couldn't find the model though.... I could see this being an awesome chasis for the fire service...

Here is a video I took of the Physio Control LUCAS device in action at the Firehouse Central Expo in Dallas in September. It was attached to a LifePak 15 which it can be controlled and adjusted by (automatically).

Everyone cites "343" as the number of firefighters lost on 9/11. However, firefighters routinely are dying acutely because of their responding and working this incident, and don't their deaths count as well? What about the two FDNY firefighters who died while fighting a fire in a building damaged on 9/11? Personally, I think "343" is a low number, and tragically, almost 10 years later, it is still growing. A lot of firefighters sacrificed their lives to save others at this incident, some died instantly, and some had to suffer through illness and PTSD and then die. I don't mean to be gory or disrespectful, just wanted to shed some light on this and see what others thought.

I have to agree that SOME services it would only make sense to consolidate. Things like consolidating communications for PD,FD, and EMS into a single PSAP. This would free up officers on "the desk", as well as free up a firefighter in Hartsdale and a firefighter in Fairview. And, based on my experiences, I totally agree with the public being more educated about Fire Commisioners and Budget votes. The turnout at these votes are really low. The public may be ignorant, but that shouldn't be. They are the ones paying the taxes and funding these departments. Rarely do you see budget or commisioner elections advertised, except a tiny little law-required legal notice buried in the classifieds. And, the question I've always thought, is who is going to replace these commisioners when the time comes? Also, cooperative equipment buying and equipment maintainence can save money...especially if the use the Town's very well equipped garage. Consolidation of these departments may not work, but I do see some elements that will, and I've been saying these same things I just wrote for years.
