  1. Yet another reason why healthcare sucks in this country. http://www.statesman.com/news/local/injured-patients-discover-hospitals-seeking-a-piece-of-1353975.html
  2. Found some accesible apparatus photos from last week's FDIC. I really wish I could have gone, seems like this year had a lot of awesome apparatus, especially the new FDNY stuff. http://chicagoareafire.com/blog/2011/03/fdic-2011-highlights/
  3. This is an example of why a walkaround is essential, and communicating that information found to interior crews is even more essential.
  4. If a patient is in asystole and given IV Narcan with good CPR, then their chances of survival increase greatly. IV Narcan is different then nasal narcan. It absorbs in a much different way, and has been proven to save lives without significant side effects. Regardless, there is bad heroin going around, and every tool should be used to combat this. It's not our place to judge these people for what they have done to themselves, but we're not God either. It's not our job to judge people- it's our job to save lives. And this will give the patient that extra edge where time is critical, so why isn't this being done? People who have gone through these bad heroin going around situations know....that you sometimes even run out of Narcan because there are so many....I remember this situation happening in Yonkers when I was an EMT.....we responded to the projects on School Street several times on one shift for the same thing. And the correct way to titrate Narcan is enough so they can walk to the bus......
  5. That's why equpping Police Officers with the narcan would be important-they are always on the road and mostly always first on scene in these communities. If other major cities are letting this be administered by civilians with minimal training, then there's absolutely no reason why it can't be allowed in Westchester, especially with all the credible research available. And if someone does overdose on heroin, there needs to be some leniecy on the victim by law enforcement so people call immediately without the fear of getting arrested.
  6. Fox is re-airing the pilot episode of the series, "The Chicago Code", tonight at 10 EST. Good chance for those who are just getting into the series, or want to.
  7. This really isn't a complicated fix. Put temporary repeaters inside the terminal, until permanent ones can be installed. But there's probaly going to be a dispute on who should fund it. I don't think an officer engaged with a subject has the time to make a cell phone call when he or she needs backup...... I know the new American Airlines terminal at JFK is gigantic, I wonder how they work on there? Kind of an unrelated question- who dispatches the PAPD, and where are they located? Is each facility have their own dispatch?
  8. Great job guys! FULL ARTICLE: http://www.lohud.com/article/20110328/NEWS/110328002/Pace-students-rescued-White-Plains-fire-?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|Frontpage
  9. Question- Does NYS mobilize their wildland fire service to this region during these conditions?
  10. We are not there, yet. I've been trying to save funds for a few years to get this done (Federal Filing fees and help filing), and the application is quite extensive. I HOPE to get it done as soon as time and funds allow.
  11. With all the new construction going on down here, I frequently see these concrete pumps used mainly to pour foundations. I think they could be very useful in delivering a large amount of water to a difficult area to access. They can go up, over, and around a lot of obstacles, and have a far reach. Phoenix FD has one adapted for firematic and foam use: http://phoenixfirepics.angelfire.com/PhoenixFire5.html So, why don't we see more of these?

  13. I know a couple departments around here are already ready to order it. The rear cowl doesn't prevent firefighters from exiting either side. From the people I spoke with at FDIC, it's a REALLY nice chasis with a ton of room and convienent features. It's actually much more accomodating to crews, then let's say, an HME "Ahrens Fox". 15. Maybe with more fuel efficient planes, in the future, lol. They could AT LEAST, right now, fly to one of their major hubs, like O'Hare or Baltimore, then you can connect anywhere. Is there even any more room to park at HPN? I haven't been there in years. When I did, they had, but didn't use the boarding gates. You got on and off the plane via ramp, much like jetBlue at Long Beach CA. The terminal was small and cramped (the new one, not the Quanset hut), and there was no place to get food or beverage while you waited for you flight. One of the worst airports I've ever flown out of. Which is a shame, because it has so much potential.
  16. According to a posting on FireEngines.net by a very credible and reputable member of that site, FDNY has awarded a contract to Wheeled Coach for 56 regular ambulances on a 4 door Dodge Ram 4500 Chasis. Further info: http://www.modelfiretrucks.net/smf/index.php?topic=12372.0
  17. Wow. That is ridiclous, especially with the taxes people pay to live in Pelham. Isn't Pelham and Pelham Manor one of the wealthiest areas in the country? Chief Stone seems to be doing an excellent job with the limited resources he's allocated. From what I have been told, Pelham FD has been making strides in recent years from where they used to be 10-15 years ago. I can't believe some of the absurd suggestions that the Village Board is making. Like outfitting Chief Stone's personal vehicle to be his work car, and to use DPW workers and crosstrain them as volunteer firefighters? First, that takes away from DPW's job, which means other things wouldn't get done. Especially if the DPW workers get injured on a fire scene. Is Pelham going to cover them as a firefighter or DPW worker? Are they going to force this on DPW? And if DPW is union, are they going to take away jobs from the Pelham FD local? They definetly should seriously consider a merger with New Rochelle or Eastchester. It seems like Pelham has been cheap on their FD/EMS spending on and off for years, and (I feel) would benefit in multiple ways by collaborating with New Ro or Eastchester. And three firefighters on duty isn't even a full Engine or Truck company, and doesn't comply with the 2 in/2 out rule. Do the Pelham FD Lt's count in that number, or seperate?
  18. AWESOME find! Is this the one they they've been touting in magazine as "Prepare For The Fight"? Glad to see the Dash is back! Kind of reminds me of the Seagrave Lo-Pro. And "CF" kind of reminds me of Mack. Also, Pierce has done a great job with reaching out via social media lately.
  19. Thanks for the info, Pete! That was definetly a unique and interesting job! What was underneath the bridge?
  20. BTW, what is Southwest doing with the 727's it aqquired in the buyout? Too bad they don't have a direct route from Austin to HPN. But now I have two airline choices to connect in Florida to get to Westchester County Airport. Not like I will be going anywhere anytime soon.
  21. At approx. 0100 this date, Miami-Dade ARFF and FD responded to a jet fuel storage tank explosion. It will be interesting to see what the cause is. I thought these tanks were designed not to catch fire. Read more: http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/03/23/2131149/large-fuel-fire-breaks-out-at.html#ixzz1HXHD2boN
  22. Date: 3-24-11 Time: 0100 Location: Miami International Airport Departments: Miami-Dade Fire Rescue ARFF and FD, City Of Miami FD Description: Large jet fuel storage tank exploded , unknown reason. Delays at the airport due to fuel issues. Links: http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/03/23/2131149/large-fuel-fire-breaks-out-at.html Writer: x635
  23. I had heard that Boeing was designing the next-generation 737 with a version to meet Southwest's needs. Maybe this is a ploy by Southwest to Boeing to shape up their operations. They have a lot of delayed deliveries, and increasing competion. But, since Southwest only uses 737's, and having one type of aircraft in their fleet is touted in ther business model, it would probaly cost them quite a bit to change and add another type of aircraft.
  24. Strong work by the 4th Precinct and Yonkers PD ESU!
  25. As someone who loves animals, I'm very thankful for Lt. Lugaro and the ASPCA PD. I hate people who neglect and abuse animals, and they are cowardly criminals who should be rooted out and prosecuted.
