  1. Thanks Bill. Wasn't much to see once I got there. I was on scene only about 5 minutes. Everybody was working, nobody paid much attention to me, since all hands were either doing overhaul or salvage. It's Austin, so everyone is really laid back and unless I got in the way or it was a big fire or incident or unusal or high profile location, I don't think anyone would say anything or mind. I am only one of two buffs in the Austin area that I know of or have seen in the 3 years I've lived here, so not many fires get "buffed", or even get news coverage. There are a lot of fires and incidents to buff everyday, so if you roam the city you'll most likely get something to buff. When I visit firehouses to photograph apparatus, firefighters are really cool and hospitable. They don't know at first really what a fire photographer or buff is, but once they know they think that it is pretty cool. This fire only got an extra engine and truck because of the tempature, otherwise it was an everyday no big deal bread-and-butter type fire for them. Now that I have the HomePatrol Scanner in my car, I hope to catch more fires.
  2. Not at all. That was one of the things I took into consideratiion. It runs inbetween the seat and the void space between the console and seat, and you can slide the seat all the way foward and all the way back. Also, I rarely have a passenger, since I primarily use the car for errands, going to work, and photo hunting, so it's rare. Mostly use my wife's car, since it has all the baby stuff in it, and my car is a two door version of the Focus. Also, I should note that I have the Ford Mictosoft Sync in the car, so I can attach it via USB and hear the radio through my car speakers. I also got a Uniden external speaker, but haven't figured out where to mount it yet. (with the muscic I listen to....Avenged Sevenfold, Stone Sour, Art Of Dying, In This Moment, etc) I want to be able be able to override that when I hear a legit incident.
  3. Also, as mentioned in the IA, Yorktown Heights also responded, details of their role on their website: http://www.yorktownfire.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=310
  4. Who are we to play God? I agree it should be taken into consideration for safety reasons, but not be used to judge whether they should rescue the man or not.

  6. I want to know where the money is going! Hopefully back to fund the PD! This money would be great seed money to start the process of building a new police HQ/court at the old Frank's Nursery site and enviromental cleanup there. Greenburgh rakes in cash from years-old traffic tickets. Still can't believe Greenburgh is going after these people. 7. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the Officers involved! http://www.lohud.com/article/20110601/NEWS/110601002/2-motorcycle-officers-hurt-collsion-White-Plains?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|Frontpage
  8. This gives a little more insight and "behind the scenes" of this incident. Made me change my viewpoint, and the firefighters were justified in their actions. Sometimes you have to weigh risk vs. benefit, and I think this would have been a clear risk based on the article. http://alameda.patch.com/articles/alameda-public-safety-agencies-respond-to-beach-death
  9. Great shots as always! Makes you feel like you're there!
  10. @Anesti: you can get the frequencies from Radio Reference or the included Uniden Sentinel software. The Butel software is also available. You can also manually enter frequencies. AND, wherever you are, it also picks up radio systems automatically. @Joe: Thank for the info. It's easy enough to take out of the car cradle and bring with you, since it also is powered by rechargeable batteries. I intend to keep it updated as often as I can, including the firmware, which they keep tweaking and fixing bugs. I would like the GPS kit, maybe one day, but basically this scanner was an even swap and the GPS setup costs about $100 more. Here are some more photos of the installation: And the mount to the seatbolt, which sits like a long washer and is bolted down by the same seatbolt. (the wiring comes from my external Sirius unit, and the HomePatrol power cord, which goes to a power supply under my passenger seat. I'm going to neaten it up when I can.
  11. While I understand the policy and the danger faced by this type of situation, and this may not be the full story, to just stand there and watch a man die over department politics is disgusting.. I'm sure they at least had something to throw him. For the witnesses to go out and get the guys body they should be ashamed. Again, I don't know the full story, and they may have not wanted to put their own lives in danger due to the situation, I still don't understand. Did they even attempt to use words to save this guy? There seems to be a lot of witness acounts that correlate to the department's inaction. If you're in a community with water, at least have something to throw to them. I lknow the WEMS 45 Medics carry or used to carry rope bags for this reason. If they have a beach, at least maintain something to throw. Does anyone remember the "Cops" episode where the worker was trapped in a canal with swift water?I think it was Passaic County Sheriff's in New Jersey. FD hadn't arrived yet, and all the cops had were a life preserver which broke. The officers and bystanders worked together, jumped the chain link fence, to reach down several feet and rescue the guy. The victim was so fatigued, that he was only moments away from being taken down river and dying. That is heroism.

  13. It was originally built for the City Of Newburgh.
  14. Different circumstances, but this sounds kind of like what happened in Thornwood. Suspects used a vehicle as deadly force against officers, and Officers fired back to defend themselves. The developments in this will be interesting to follow. http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/blotter/entries/2011/05/31/one_suspect_dead_in_officerinv.html
  15. Awesome job, guys! Very impressed with the modesty despite such a heroic action!

  18. Code 3 has released FDNY Ladder 46, operates a new 2010 Seagrave Marauder II/Aerialscope II 75'. There are 4,000 made, with the price being $89.00 for non Code 3 club members, and $79.00 for club members. I don't know, from the photo and maybe it's just the photo, the detailing seems..well, quite plain and generic, compared to what Code 3 had been getting better at a few years ago, but this seems like they jacked the price (a lot) and lowered the quality. I would still want to purchase it, but at $90.00 and 4,000 made.....I think I may wait it out a bit. Take a look for yourself: http://www.code3.net/product/detail.asp?item=13059 And, for reference, this is the actual apparatus: http://www.fdnytrucks.com/files/html/bronx/e81.htm
  19. I REALLY like it, actually. The paint scheme stands out and makes the car a lot more visible, esepcially on the county's parkways where they often get hit.

  25. With the Ridge Hill development begining to open, are there any plans to add police, fire, or EMS services to the area? Maybe it's just me, but all inbound fire companies would be coming from fairly remote areas.
