Next time you hear Joe Kelley of Hartsdale FD on the radio, it will be as 2172. He's been promoted to Deputy Chief with Hartsdale FD (Shift/Incident Commander). Congrats, Joe! You are a value to the fire service, and I learned a lot from you when you were Captain of my group at HFD. Joe previously served with Arlington FD in Dutchess County years back (might not have been Arlington, but one of the career FD's in the Poughkeepsie area-can't remember). He also was the Lead Instructor for the Westchester Career Fire Academy a few years back. Well deserved!

There was a large brush fire on Fort Hood last week. 7,000 acres, destroyed 2 homes near one of the ranges. A few more popping up yesterday. I know that military air resources are being used, I'm not sure which branch besides the Texas National Guard are being used, but I know there is a mobilization forming at Camp Mabry in Austin. I thought I saw 2 Blackhawks flying near my house. For detailed minute to minute official information: http://txforestservice.tamu.edu/main/article.aspx?id=12888

The problem is, usually when you clear brush, it is compiled into a pile and burned. With a burn ban in effect, brush is cleared, it is moved to these piles but not burned. With a ton of new construction, it's hard to find places to store this brush safely. I saw a plan to grind it up, but there was some reason it wouldn't work. As they say, an Austin drought always ends in an Austin flood. Luckily, all new development in the past 15 or so years has included infastructure to deal with massive amounts of stormwater, but there are still flood prone areas. In Austin, we have wildfires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes and hazmat disasters to worry about. But our local Emergency Service agency's are prepared for anything at anytime, in a very organized fashion, as proven when the plane intentionally crashed into the building in March 2010.

Doubtful this is true. Training in wildifre sitatuions, wildfire gear, and accountability would make this a no-go, other then possibly remote water supply situations. I think a few departmental recalls may have been what was requested. Freelancing could be an arrestable offense, as you are putting assigned firefighters live's in danger.

There is public education and codes. A LOT is done to prepare from them. You DO NOT want homeowners to stay in their houses to try and hold back the fire. They can be overtaken and killed in a matter of moments. Firefighters are doing their best to protect exposures, but you don't have the time or resources to protect or fight hundreds of structure fires at once. These wildfires aren't part of nature in today's society. Combined with an exceptional drought due to months without any rain makes the brush perfect fuel. How are you supposed to let brush burn when winds are 35+ MPH plus higher gusts, and there is something called "fire weather"? And in populated areas? Hundreds of people have lost their homes, entire neighborhoods have been destroyed, thousands of people are in shelters that don't even know the status of their homes. Ash from the ruins is blowing and being found 30 miles away on cars and buildings. Agriculture has been suffering due to the drought- now thousands of acres of fields have burnt and livestock killed. And don't forget, besides the Austin area- there are fires burning in 251 out of Texas' 254 counties. Texas IS prepared-extensively....everyone was just waiting for this to break out... http://tfsweb.tamu.edu Not possible, in any way, shape, or form. Although future planning should take this into consideration, there are still thousands of homes that are in the urban interface zones. Thanks, Joe.

This is still going, with all kinds of vulger malicous links. There is malware on people's computers that record the keystrokes when they log in, and the malware then uses your contact list to send out spam. This could also be "spoofing" of your email address, but with the way AOL is set up, I doubt it. If it was "spoofing", it would be using your email address making people think you are sending the mail, but are really not. There are NUMEROUS users on this forum that have this problem and I doubt are aware of it. Here's what I reccomend: Scan your computer for any malware. I suggest using http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free as it is free and effective. You should be scanning for malware at least twice a week. If your computer is older, I highlu reccomend bringing it to a computer shop, a place like Best Buy Geek Squad, or an online service from the comfort of home, like Geek Squad, to remove any major infections you may not be able to find or resolve on your own. For the next step, check your "sent messages" for any messages you did not send to verify this issue, although the emails may not show up there anyways. Make sure your firewall settings are strong in regards to outgoing mail. When you're done with that, reboot your computer and change your password. Make sure your password it strong. For instance, use one or two capital letters, a few lowercase letters, numbers, and a symbol. Like "fiREdpeartment12#" If you do end up switching to another email provider, (we reccomend Gmail or Yahoo) remember to update your forum account here on EMTBravo. Seth

They should fund more County Police sworn Officers to patrol the park. Nothing against the seasonals or rangers, but a Police Officer is more highly trained and experienced. As I mention below, the contractors would have to fund extra full time WCPD positions, however they need for the park and however they can use them in the off season. It doesn't matter where the people come from. If it was only Westchester people, the park would see a tremendous drop in attendance. Especially with the current reputation. If I lived in the area, I would never bring my daughter there. I say hand the place over to a private contractor to bring the park up to it once was, including a boardwalk, resturants,a family friendly layout and amenities, etc. For the off season,a childrens museum, indoor concert venue, etc could bring in year around income. The county would get a percentage since they own the place. Enough talking about this and getting RFP's over and over again, and putting them off, DO IT. There are plenty of orginazations wanting to save Playland in one way or another, and my feelings that can only be accomplished if they build a safe reputation and develop year around cash flow. Also, the parking lot is pretty big....would be a nice place for a training facility for the departments in the area....just sayin'

Thanks Kyle for the photo!

In the begining, and I'm pretty sure still, the producers tell them what to say. You can note the difference when Sr. is in public vs. doing commentary at the shop or elsewhere.

Good to see you posting again, Truck6018! And thanks for the info!

Got this in the weekly Texas Fire Service e-newsletter: http://www.tcfp.texas.gov/library/avftl/081211.pdf It's a good resource for materials to talk to children about 9/11.

How does FDNY decide which areas get Tillers?

I've been reading various trade magazines, and was suprised to see that Seagrave was coming in less expensive then comprable rigs from Crimson, KME, etc. It's always been my perception that Seagrave was the "high end" and "pricey" manufacturer. I don't know if this is a new trend, but they certainly have their price points competitive. Things like this speak volumes: http://www.hudsonvalleyfire.com/content/deliver/DarienCT.cfm http://www.hudsonvalleyfire.com/content/deliver/PelhamManorNY.cfm

Outsourcing prisoner transport, I'm predicting, is going to become a trend, like privatizing jails. Don't many PD's have non-sworn "Jail Wardens" that do this? I know Yonkers and Mount Vernon do.
-
Agreed. I was lucky to be tought "why" before I was tought "how". I think that there are too many firefighters that either do way too much or way too little not understanding the theory behind firefighting. That's why this article hits the nail on the head.

It was in my vows about taking photos, lol. My wife and I used to travel a lot. Then came our little girl, which some would say stops them from traveling, but she's already traveling and loving it! She's going to see a lot of places as she grows up. Again, I'm glad you had a great time and got great photos.

Here in the great State Of Texas, we have hundreds of trails for ATV's down here, in all kinds of enviroments from swampland to desert, to beaches to mountain and canyons, to thick forest and tricky hills. You can even get a few ATV's and a RV vacation package. As long as you're not doing anything illegal or dangerous in a populated or private or protected areas, Law Enforcement has better things to do. LEO's want to catch criminals and stop crime. ATV'ing is considered recreation. And every LEO that I know uses every excuse in the book to use the department's ATV's when there's a missing person search, etc! And since your are an FD Captain, that would give you a lot of respect. "This guy sends firefighters into burning buildings and makes sure they go home. Why would someone harrass him for riding with his son-damn yankees"-quote I just got...
