  1. When I drive through Tarrytown, I've always been fascinated at the wide variety of the structures they have, and the challenges they face firefighters. As a matter of fact, we actually used photos of structures in Tarrytown in my probie class as a learning tool. This is one example. This is in Riverside Hose's first due, and I think the rearmount stick, I forget the number. This looks like it could be an IC's nightmare. I was going through my photos, and figured I'd share it. On a side note, has Tarrytown ordered a new aerial for that company? If so, what did they go with?
  2. I've always noticed that New Rochelle Ladder 13 (the old Pierce) has been the star fire truck in many, many childrens books. Since my daughter LOVES books, I was searching around for a few small books for her. Of course, being who I am, one of the books was about airplanes, trains, boats, trucks, police cars, etc... This bookstore is awesome, and has an overwhelming amount of childrens books, just about every one published probaly. But this book really stood out, and ended up in my shopping bag.
  3. I was thinking today while driving. Dangerous habit. Anyways, Our core goal is to save lives and preserve property, while protecting ourselves while doing so. Sure, a search team could find a missing person. A crew with a handline can extinguish the fire. A Truck company can open the door for those teams to do so. That's us serving the public. But isn't ventilation really for us? Quickly ventilating a building can make it A LOT easier for those inside, is well duh! thing. How accesible are your saws? Do you, or will you, have a crew to complete this task ASAP? What do you think? Do you think some IC's put this off? What is a reasonable time for ventilation for a typical two story garden style OMD?
  4. Departments by me are starting to pick this up. Crews are changing the verbage of a progress report to a "CAN" report. From what I understand, it stands for (C )onditions, (A)ctions,(N)eeds. I didn't have much time to research or discuss this, but all I know is that it provides an easy "template" for a progress report. I know there are probaly plenty of articles on the internet, but if someone could elaborate here it would be awesome. Also, is this technique being used up north yet? (I don't listen to the radio up there)
  5. That's a lot of new firefighters! Congrats to all who made it throught the academy....now is when the testing really starts. I hope their departments focus on their retention as well. Also, do we have an average age of all graduates? Just curious.
  6. Great shots!
  7. PASS alarms. First, we didn't turn them on when we were supposed to. We didn't change the batteries, or the batteries ran out unoticed. Or we left them on when not needed. So, they intergrated them into the airpacks. Now, they go off so frequently, it's like car alarms....no one pays attention anymore in most cases. Heck, you can hardly hear on a fire scene because they go off so much. What have departments done to combat this "compliance", and have any departments found technological or logistical solutions around a PASS alarm?
  8. I know, especially with the current economy, and with civil service testing methods being antiquated in NJ and the area, it would be tough to transition like you said. However, keep an open mind. If you truly want to be a firefighter, you will find a job in Texas. There are a wide range of departments, some even require you volunteer or work part time first. There are a lot of growing cities that hire often. I don't know about other states, but the fire service here has many more oppurtunities to become a firefighter.
  9. If you don't know something, you're not obligated to answer the question. Your answer was compleltly incorrect. Be careful assumuing, and have some patience....someone who knows what it is will come along and pass it on. Also, I noticed that you went back and edited all your replies after this post. Hartsdale FD has that Utility Line Truck to maintain it's Gamewell Fire Box system, that maintains the Gamewell system. Two firefighters are paid an electrician's stipend to perform this service, like many departments still do in New England. There are numerous boxes throughout Hartsdale, in all the schools, etc. I'm sure wraftery knows way,way more about this truck, and I hope he will chime in. As far as the truck, it's in pretty great condition considering it's age, especially the chasis. Here's a photo of it in quarters, it used to sit between TL-15 and C-2172 (Disclaimer: my information is of 2008, will get further if needed and advise)
  10. Every week, there is a question like I'm about to ask in a Texas Fire Service website., which I'm getting some interesting discussions out of here. Some Chiefs ask for this on the site, then I link them to this thread and they really like it. So, Does any department have policies regarding taking apparatus off road to access an incident?
  11. First off, I don't understand why all of NYPD ESU's are on a heavier duty, larger chasis like this. But I guess the Ford F-550's are just as heavy duty and the current bodys are just the right size for patrol. But you think that they (NYPD ESU) could use the extra space as well for the ever-increasing terrorism equipment they carry. http://www.odysseyauto.com/vehicles/rescue/city_hd_esu.html Just one question, what does NYC Corrections ESU do?
  12. For a fire department that is not a medical first responder and does not provide fire-based EMS services, what should the minimal level of training be?
  13. Hope these work for you....both are 2010 Pierce's. PM me if you need the full res copy.

  16. Great pics! Awesome to see the TMFD and other rigs in action!
  17. B & H is an excellent place to buy from. They are knowledgable and carry almost anything camera related. Last time I was there (2008) they had just renovated they dedicated the entire second floor to Digital Camera. For someone just starting out, I'd highly reccomend the following camera: Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital Camera http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/753762-REG/Canon_5169B003_EOS_Rebel_T3i_Digital.html Here's a great compact camera that's easier to tote around, easier and less expensive: Canon S100 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/822124-REG/Canon_PowerShot_S100_Digital_Camera.html Also, keep in mind you will need to buy a memory card (8 GB min), spare battery, and protective carrying case. I may have some surplus cameras coming available soon as well, mostly all point and shoots though.
  18. So, how does FDNY dispatching work now? Are NYPD Calltakers trained in EMD, EFD, or EPD? Who is the duty supervisor for each shift? Why hasn't NYC adopted communications standards set in other major cities?
  19. This article was posted on VentEnterSearch.com http://www.vententersearch.com/?p=1512 Couldn't the knife become a hazard if accidentally dislodge from it's case in the positions it's shown mounted in?
  20. The BRAT brand has developed a reputation from it's inception as a brush truck to the current units being produced. Firematic manufasctures a host of vehicles under the "BRAT" banner now. I've always thought that now the name is kind of obsolete due to it's orginal purpose. The MVPD ESU truck looks AWESOME! Glad to see MVPD ESU getting this high quality truck that will run 24/7/365. As far as FDNY, I'm curious. It is definetly an older model Ford F-series, maybe 2003-is. It also has an amber lightbar. Firematic just mounted the Skid unit, which is weird because the FDNY shops usually could handle something something like this. Would it technically be a brush unit or used for something else? Thanks again to Steve for his heads up with these new deliveries!
  21. I just installed a new, live chat feature. Right now, it's limited to five members at a time. If members use it, I'll increase the number. You can also have personal live chats with other members and staff. Also, maybe we could have events like live chats with some of our very knowlegeable members and have a topic and pick their brains. Hope you enjoy this new feature. Oh yeah, you can access it from the tabs on the top of the page. Seth
  22. I snipped this excellent post from another thread, thought it would make for a good discussion. Hope you don't mind, Kurt.
  23. Chat is back. It can be accessed through the tab above, right underneath the "EMTBravo.net" banner.
  24. I like the idea. Especially when you are cleaning up the fireround. Maybe just reflective tape (the heavy duty scotchlike type) would do the job.
