  1. If Bee-Line goes on strike, then what happens to the Indian Point Evacuation plan?
  2. What software are you using?
  3. Here are some better shots from my friend, Ben, who was able to make the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport stop today, in much nicer weather. http://www.bensware.com/firetrucks/PierceRoadRallySW2012/
  4. Anyone under the age of 18 is not emotionally equipped to handle some EMS situations. No, coming here with fellow peers that may have the knowledge and experience is your friend. They has a search engine that displays a multitude of results.Including this site. I've Googled things and then came here for further information and opinions.
  5. Disclaimer: My opinion is based on what I've been told by various sources and formed by me. The FF's who work these trucks and engines know them best. It also shouldn't be forgetten that Seagrave has been used by FDNY almost exclusively (with Mack, too) for decades. It makes it easier in some ways because the mechanics become more familiar with the apparatus, and the parts are not hard to come by. A lot of what FDNY specs as well is in regards to maintainence. As far as manufacturers, each on has something to offer. For example, Seagrave has Aerialscope. Pierce has the Bronto Skylift and an incresingly popular aluminum aerial. E-One and KME offer 125' + ladders. Etc. Also with the pounding of the NYC streets and weather, it takes a toll, no matter how you spec it. There's also not a large profit margin on the FDNY contract, so few manufactuers want to take a crack at it. Seagrave has all the engineering done, while Ferrara had to spend millions to develop the FDNY apparatus they built.
  6. Pierce recently held a "Southwest Road Rally", with stops in Louisianna, Texas, New Mexico, and California. It came through Austin in the Cabella's parking lot. This was a really cool idea on Pierce's part. This was my first time seeing the Dash CF up close, and while not a solution for all agencies, I see it being the perfect fit for some. There also was other apparatus on display from Pierce and the Pierce Contender brand, as well as a Siddons Skeeter Brush Truck. (Siddons-Martin is the dealer for Pierce). All the vehicles are stock and available for immediate purchase. The Dash CF will not be available until the Spring. I'll hopefully have some more time later this week to post more photos. And I apologize for the crappy shots, there's been severe fog and drizzle in the mornings down here. Inside the Dash CF:
  7. I've got to add as well, as stated above, you have to be on top of your game to be an Empress dispatcher. They usually don't hire from outside, and only take people from within. If you apply for this job, you need to bring your A-game to work everyday. The City Of Yonkers and all of Empress' contracts (business that keeps your job) will depend heavily on the dispatcher. As well as the safety of the crews. And you can't multitask multitasking, then don't even bother. Many Empress dispatchers over the years have gone on to accomplish great careers, which speaks volumes of the training and experience you'll get at Empress.
  8. I agree with this article. This is why, IMHO, High Schools should still have "Shop", and vocational education shouldn't be shunned. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/100-000-factory-job-whats-145600750.html

  11. I've been told that FDNY is currently considering three bids for the new Engine contract, which will be over 100+ engines over a certain period of time. I believe KME was the low bidder, with Ferrara being next, and Seagrave being third. I see FDNY returning to Seagrave if they are able to meet the warranty requirements.
  12. Looks like a great job by all! However, it must suck to have to fight a wildland fire in structural gear!
  13. There's one up for auction at: http://www.auctionsinternational.com/item.cgi?show_item=0000080105
  14. In the latest edition of FAJ, it was announced that Seagrave was the only bidder on a contract to replace all the FDNY Squad company Engines. I'm suprised Ferrara didn't even bid.
  15. Well, after some research, I decided to stick with the Blackberry. I got the Blackberry Bold 9900. AT&T is still retailing it with contract for $199, but I got mine for $60 on AmazonWireless.com. I was trying to hold out for a price drop, or the Blackberry 10 OS, but it doesn't seem to be happening for a while. My Blackberry Curve 8900 was reaching 3 years old, and was starting to get very slow when I tried to do anything. The Bold is really, really fast, and I can take advantage of the new, real AT&T 4G LTE network. There are a lot of apps with Android, which I liked, but all I really use my phone for is the phone, email, and messaging, as well as Evernote, Google, and Wikipedia. Thanks to everyone for the advice.
  16. I do like the chasis. It's MUCH better then the other chasis Rosenbaeur introduced several years ago http://www.woodbridgefd.org/content/current/image/1-10(1).jpg And, isn't this a Spartan built chasis built exclusiverly for Rosenbeaur?

  19. I think it's an excellent idea. A very unique and nostalgic idea. Also could be used for emergencies when needed.
  20. Excellent post, sueg. So, if an elderly or disabled person called your fire department, and asked for help with their smoke detector, how does your department handle it? If they need their battery changed and can't reach their detector, then what? As far as liability, so what? You can get sued for anything. Err in the favor of service. I would think it would be more of a liability if someone asked for your department's help with a smoke detector and was denied, and then died because your department wasn't willing to help. Any department should be willing at any time to assist citizens with fire prevention and life saving devices in any capacity.
  21. This week's episode of "Dirty Jobs" features Mike visiting the San Francisco FD ladder shops, where they still make and repair all of the department's famous wooden ladders in house. It's replaying this weekend, and will probaly replay multiple times in the future, as well as on demand on some cable systems. The episode is:
  22. Another question-are there situations where you need to "open up" despite what the thermal imager says?
  23. Thanks for sharing your story, George. I am sorry for your loss. The last sentence says it all.
