Well, this is certainly a new angle. "Warning: Beer May Lead To Criminal Activity" These guys need to learn to take responsiblity for their actions, instead of adding another frivolous lawsuit to the docket and being even more of a burden to society then they already are. It's not enough victims suffered, and the citizens had to pickup hundreds of thousands of dollars for the police, trial and incarceration, now we should give them $1 billion for being stupid? I guess this is part of the blame everybody else society. Read more: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/03/idaho-inmates-sue-beer-alcohol-companies_n_2404851.html?utm_hp_ref=food&

So, I've really gotten into this show, and for a TV Drama, it's fairly accurate. The way they do things, is, in some cases, better then I've seen real life people do it.

Thanks, guys. Your kind words are much appreciated. Couldn't do it without such a kick-butt staff team and an awesome membership.

When I travel NYC Subways, and Metro North, one of my biggest fears, especially with some of the "characters" that are on the platforms, is getting pushed in front of a moving train. I always try to stand by a beam and keep aware of my surroundings. Stations with narrow platforms, such as White Plains, are concerning to me. Last year, 54 people died on the tracks of the NYC subway. Other cities with large subway systems, such as London, already have these barriers. And, on the GCT-Times Square Shuttle, there are rails at the Times Square end, because people go psycho for that train when it arrived it is mobbed.I know there would be costs involved installing barriers citiywide, but I think it is worth it. "Stand clear of the closing doors please" "This is the train to safetyville.....the next stop is actionville" "Please Watch The Gap Between The Train And The Platform" Read more: http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/MTA-Considers-Partition-on-Subway-Platforms-185153541.html

Today, Metro North is an awesome operation that I enjoy riding frequently. The conductors and engineers are always friendly and proffesional. The Safety personel, including the MNRR Fire Dept guys, are on the ball. And all other Metro North employees are extremly dedicated and stop at nothing short of perfection. All contribute to an awesome operation. Congrats to Metro North on this 30th year! Got a shot of NYSP H208, a 2012 Chevrolet Caprice, and it was black. Are NYSP cars going to be black now? I'd really hate to see that, as I really like that unique dark metallic blue they have. (Sorry for the crappy shot) And here is a photo of one of their K9 Tahoe's for comparison:

Thanks Frank for your hard work in covering the emergency services events in the lower Hudson Valley! Your work is always outstanding. For those that don't know Frank, he has been covering Westchester and beyond as a photgrapher for the Journal News and it's predecessors for over 30 years. He is mostly assigned to breaking incidents and emergency services-involved event. Frank is an ex-chief in North White Plains, and a member of Brewster FD. He is a legend in his own right, and the son of another legend, Frank Becerra Sr who was an artist for the Journal News predeccesors for decades. His dad's art was seen around the world. I can only imagine how proud Jr. makes his dad. He was assigned by Journal News editors to the Newtown CT incident, where the photos he took were seen around the world, published by Gannet Affiliates worldwide and were also on the AP Wire. Watch what Frank was thinking behind the lens when assigned to this incident. This must have been one of your toughest assignments yet.

It seems to me that there's been a lot of chimney fires so far this year. I'm wondering if any department promotes chimney fires proactively, as part of their fire prevention program? Many departments had "candy can runs" this past holiday...and I only know of one that took the oppurtunity to hand out wintertime fire safety literature and promotional items with the candy canes. So, if we see a rash of fires that are attributed to one cause in a short period of time, such as the chimmney, should we promote chimney fire safety?

Great topic, dwc! In regards to the Houston incident, Spoke to a friend. As usual, the media is manipulating this situation, exeggerating what happened, and reporting based on ignorance of the fire service. When firefighters arrived, and during the duration of the incident, it was not known if anybody who lived inside was present. The house had been "renovated" several times and was falling apart, the electricty was turned off, mail was piled up at the door, the landscaping was overgrown, and, at the time, there were no cars in the driveway. The house was an extensive Colliers Mansion-hoarding situation. The victim was buried under a huge pile of debris, includingg large parts of the structures. and his body was basically disingrated. Neighbors didn't know anybody who lived in the house, and several neighbors believed the house was vacant as multiple neigbors stated they hadn't seen anyone in months at that house. There was no sign that squatters were living in the house, as the kitchen was stripped, no food, and no running water meant no toilet. No way to find the signs of elimination. The body was found by chance by Arson Investigators following the burn pattern. The "mother" came the day after, and immediately retained a lawyer who happened to be also on scene with a neighbor who was supposefly a client in an unrelated case...., who, in turn, called the media. We all make mistakes. This was a crappy situation for the firefighters. The guy was dead when they got there from smoke inhalation, and with the conditions and information stated above, we can't take an entire structure apart and remove all debris during the searchs. And in Colliers Mansion conditions, it's most likely that victims may put themselves in risk of not being found during a fire. And, during the searchs, firefighters were keeping getting buried when the piles of crap that lined the hallways kept falling on them, complicating their search. Overhaul may not be extensive enough to even find any fire victim in the conditions stated above, especially when there's no one on scene or no information to find out about people living in the house (the IC followed all leads that he could get). Also, it was treated as an arson and the scene was secured until daylight the next day. When doing overhaul evidence must be preserved as best as possible. So, instead of the media emphasizing how clutter can kill you, they turn a cheek to all the facts, glaze over what the conditions were inside the structure and blame the villians in this story....the firefighters. It's situations like this where I'd love to put the reporters and neighbors in a turnout gear and a donned SCBA and let them search through those conditions, and see what they come up with. And really, does any firefighter want to NOT find somebody? As for the FD, it's a really strong combination department located, like their name, is a northwestern suburb of Houston, TX. Several members are also career guys in some of the busiest companies in Houston. http://www.northwestfiredept.com/NWSite/NwFrame.html

With the tragedies that occured in Newtown,CT and Webster,NY, we must not lose focus. People, adults and children, are severly burned or killed in house fires like the one below. Fires also take peoples homes and busineses. It happens almost every day. There's a lot of talk about gun control and how we can prevent shooting incidents lately, and for good reason. But, what about fire control? Why shouldn't the everyday tragedies, of which could benefit from changes in the fire servie, get the same attention? Things such as mandatory sprinklers in residential structures and smoke detectors should be standard in every community. We should figure out ways to increase staffing and upgrade equipment, so that the first due has enough manpower to initate a rescue efficienty. "Bedroom communities" should have increased staffing at night and on the weekends. OSHA, or whatever regulatory agency that could do it, should mandate 4 firefighters on every apparatus. And fire prevention classes should be mandated twice yearly for every student in every grade in the US. Require firefighters to be "Certified" just like EMT's and Police Officers. Hold EVERY firefighter in the US to the same standard. Push for realistic interoperability. And learn from New Jersey, and their homeland security preperations and operations. That should be what the fed's should be doing nationwide. The media has covered just about every possible angle regarding Newtown and Webster. They are intense tragedies. But the "everyday" tragedies should not be overlooked, as they add up. Why are these tragedies any different? Look at the statistics for 2011 in the US from NFPA. It speaks for itself. Of course, we can't prevent every fire, nor can we rescue everybody every time, but we can do our best that we can, and campaign as hard as we can for change in the fire service. The goverment regulates a lot of things, such as automotive safety compliance. Why can't we have mandatory things like other federal agencies require, such as the USDA, EPA, and Transportation Safety board. Both set strict regulations for compliance, and they follow up on it, and fine companies that aren't complying. Look at airports. The fire service for ARFF is strictly regulated and has to follow specific protocols. Why should the fire service be any different? Apparently, they don't plow the Taconic northbound anymore. Maybe it was too crowded with bumper to bumper traffic moving at 10-20MPH to effieciently get in there and plow-but they could have gotten in there with a plow team. Or maybe they don't have enough manpower or sand/salt due to NYS budget cuts.

Recently, I've seen Hazmat robots mentioned in several various articles. Here's a good article on the robots: http://firechief.com/cbrn-monitoring-and-detection/robotics-extend-hazmat-s-reach I'm just wondering if any area agency is currently using a robot, or has one on order?
