  2. I thought the same thing, and understand your doubts. So I did some research, and I am pretty sure I believe the story now. There have been similar cases where the delivery driver would do something like this. Plus, it's on a pretty credible website. And this is exactly why people videotape it.
  3. Here's another shot of the car that I got yesterday. It's been in service with 43-M-1 (Empress ID Medic 60) in Yonkers for over a week. It's twin is still being outfitted and should be delivered shortly. To the vehicle, but also some similar traits to Wake's program.(It should be noted that the former Deputy Medical Director for Wake County NC was a former Empress EMS Paramedic, and is now the Medical Director for Austin-Travis County TX EMS)
  4. Dell sucks. I also had a problem with them after they sent me a lemon computer. I made multiple calls to them, each one more futile. Every time I called, I had to start over from square one. Completly frusterated with Dell and no longer wanting to spend hours on the phone with them, I eventually had to get the computer repaired out of my own pocket to keep my sanity. Then I started having problems with my laptop. Again, same deal. I completly sympathize with this guy. Given that I lived in the hometown of Dell, I know many of their employees hate them just as much. It's sad that Dell has such a grip on the computer market. And they know it and I feel that's why the average customer is not important to them. With discontent with Dell increasing, I see repeat customers going with another vendor and Dell losing marketshare. I'm a happy Lenovo customer now. Never again will I buy anything from Dell.

  6. I wonder why a central firehouse concept wouldn't work. I know MKFD looked into this, just wondering what they came up with. I know with the traffic and roads, and volunteers going to the firehouses, the current setup is ideal. Just that one building would probaly cost less then three, you'd think that the politicians would be looking for that, especially if they get to put two properties in the valuable central business district back on the tax rolls.
  7. I didn't mean local agencies don't, I just meant that being a County PD, they still have local dedication. No problem, I try to present opinions that will engage people in discussion. I'm glad to see it's doing that.
  8. With an increasing amount of time spent online, should emergency services personel be issued personal iPads? I was reading an interview with the Las Vegas Fire Department Chief in Firehouse Magazine (July 2012, Page 68), and read about how they really embrace technology. In the article, it is mentioned about how the trend of how technology is becoming almost essential in everything we do, and how more and more firefighters are beoming technologically savvy. The Las Vegas concept is to issue each FF with a business only, locked down iPad. This iPad could be used for checking department email, handling their timecard, virtually attend almost all of their didatic training, write patient care and other departmental reports. Personally, I think it's a great idea. iPads are the new clipboards and notebooks (the paper kind). Just as most departments now issue their members their own portables (worth several hundred dollars each), issuing an iPad could be justified just as much as the radio. The efficiency gained, especially with being able to read and respond to department corrospondence, deal with scheduling and payroll issues including time off requests, navigate through and fill out various department forums, read and reference department handbooks and reference materials, and complete online training are some of the many benefits this technology can bring. Issuing individual devices to each member would allow members to take care of business on and off duty, and allow the member to customize the tablet to them, and not have to wait on communal devices that makes technology more "distant".
  9. If they are for-profit, then they pay taxes. I know a lot of FD's that are not responding to calls in urgent care facilities unless they are serious, since these facilities already have medical personel on hand. Issues with facilities that cause a frequent and abnormal workload for FD and EMS, should be dealt with when these facilites go through the planning and zoning process. Is it possible to have a municipal or district law requiring these facilities to pay for the workload they create in some form or fashion? And/or should we teach these facilities when to call a commercial provider and when to call 911?
  10. I'd give KME a chance, and keep an open mind. They are used in numerous major cities from coast to coast, and have many repeat customers. The apparatus they produce are highly customized. They are not the same KME of several years ago, they've come a long way from what they were. Building for so many different customers coast to coast has given them a lot of engineering experience, and added to their research and development aresenal. It also allows them to have the capability and experience to accomodate such a large order. Just because it's not a Seagrave doesn't mean that it's crap. Seagrave had their problems, in fact numerous problems, as well with the FDNY pproducts they produced. I think that it's a money-loser for Seagrave, and they want to be better off with smaller departments who want a high quality, legendary rig, or smaller contracts with unique rigs that are exclusive to them, like the Aerialscopes. I hope these rigs, any rigs in fact, work well with the FDNY members and give them what they want and need to perform the jobs they do in some of the most brutal conditions for apparatus in the world.
  11. On the flip side, you can go from 1 patrol car to 3 patrol cars depending on what criminal activity is going on in your neighborhood. In this case, you pay less, but get more. In my daily commute, I see more County PD cars then I see local PD cars. They are everywhere. And NYSP has also seemingly beefed up their coverage of the Taconic. Both are extremly proactive, because they have the staff, resources, and flexibilty to do so. The presence of these agencies and the advanced level of serivce they provide with 100% dedication and professionalism to the community should be taken full advantage of.
  12. Simple solution. Westchester County PD. Not only do taxpayers benefit, but, for example, the officers of smaller agencies would have extensive advancement oppurtunities, and can work areas that suit their needs. The interoperability would allow County PD Communications staff and dispatchers to deploy officers real-time to where they are needed faster and used to the fullest potential. And every officer in the county would be on the same level. This doesn't have to be a kick everybody out and start over. This could be phased in, so those that have dedicated their careers to certain agencies and have moved up in rank don't have to have everything taken away from them. The local control could be replaced with increased security. Having the manned desk could be replaced with a more interactive website for things such as obtaining reports online, and regional precincts. The only issue I see would be local laws. How would consolidation affect that?
  13. Great topic! Coincidentally, Fairview FD (the one in the Town Of Greenburgh, Westchester County), has a fire district where over 60% is non taxable. In 1996, there were plans to build a large new assisted living and skilled nursing facility near the WCC campus, which would be non-taxable. The not-for-profit donated Rescue 3 a at the time brand new International 4x4/KME as a trade off. I don't know, now that it is built and operating, if this facility contributes more towards operating expenses, because they sure-as-heck use those services, but I'm sure a FFD member could update us. As far as colleges go, there's a trade off. Yes, there are increased responses, but at the same time, do these colleges contribute enough to the local economy to balance things out? Such as jobs, sales tax from local businesses generated by college students patronizing lose local businesses, etc. I do think, even with the economic benefit most colleges provide to the surrounding communities, that these colleges should meet with local emergency services officials to discuss what is needed to provide the agencies who serve the college with their fair share.

  16. I believe in seconds chances, but how does this guy get 96 second chances? How is he not in prison for life? I'm not being sarcasrtic, I really wonder how? I thought maybe there were all petty crimes, but 19 were felonies. http://greenburgh.dailyvoice.com/police-fire/greenburgh-police-charge-two-credit-card-thefts
  17. Empress is still looking for Paramedics, either new or seasoned, full time or per diem. Great place to work, strong family atmosphere. The best part of Empress is your fellow members. If you are a new Paramedic, Yonkers is a great place to get experience. There is a high volume of calls, and with that you will see a endless variety of situations requiring ALS. If you an experienced Paramedic, you will find daily challenges that let you truly utilize all your ALS skills and tools. Empress is clinically progressive, and has advanced protocols and equipment not found anywhere else in the region. There are also great oppurtunities for advancement and professional growth.
