I never said this, and I will deny it to the hilt. Next time you are in some smoke at the burn building and it is getting a little hot, too, find a place where no one can see you, and do this: Take your glove off one hand and hold your ungloved hand up in the air for 1 second. It's hotter up there. A lot hotter. Now your head up a little and pull outward on your facepiece until some smoke comes in. Now do the same thing with your nose to the ground. There's air at the floor. Watch out for the Safety guys with TICS. They can get you fired for trying this. Because smoke contains carcinigens, etc., you should only do thid TWICE in your lifetime. The first is at the training center. The second is when you are in Mayday-style trouble, out of air, and trying to get a breath. Or you could take Flynn's word for it and CRAWL...all the time. (Say nothing, Lads, I tell you this in secrecy.)

Regarding Europe, we tend to have more combustibles (wood) in US construction. Masonry is more prevalent in Europe. Just an observation

If you have a Halligan (a real one) handy. take a look at it's engineering. Its awesome leverage and versatility are accomplished through subtile curves, angles, and grindings. All of this was developed in the brain of one man. Many have tried to improve on it and give it their owm name, but none have succeeded. While you are reading this thread, I would be willing to bet that a company officer is on a run someplace in this country, and calling out the good Chief's name to his crew...HALLIGAN!

John and I came on the job together way back in 1971. He was one of those guys that made the job FUN. Rest in Peace, my Brother

I guess that "Mount Vernon Shooting" should not be an IA because it is routine.

One point to remember. You are not on the phone...a lot of people hear your transmission. Watch what you say and how you say it.

Look just under the front bumper. Those are the jackpads for the front jacks.

More often than not, with resident hiring, the "resident" moves out of town within a couple of years of his hiring. Nothing against him. Ya gotta live where you can afford it. You simply get more bang for your buck out of town.

After being interviewed, fire officers should always read the daily newspaper...more often than not they will find out what they DIDN'T say.

The question here is "Did it melt the ice?" If the answer is "yes," then he accomplished his goal. Now he just has to tweak a few bugs out of his system.

Brings back memories. I remember HFD's old E 171. No adjustible seat No power steering Tiny little windshield wipers No roof...rain hurt your face No heater, but you could warm your hands by holding them in the exhaust Try backing it up...the back was wider than the front and the mirrors stuck out on rods, vibrating so much you only saw blur

During World War II I believe the quarry was jokingly called the TUCKAHOE NAVY YARD. Those who did not go to war claimed they worked there. The legend says: The military built top secret submarines there, and upon completion of the sub, it submerged, and went to sea via an under ground waterway. I'm too young to have first hand knowledge of it. Ask a really old guy about it.
