  1. I wasn't criticizing your job. I saw the wires, trees, narrow alley, and thought it was a good picture to illustrate positioning. Luckily, lettering on rigs is glued on and not painted. If the radiant heat gets your rig, the first thing to melt away is the lettering. That way, when you drive it to the paint shop, your dept name is gone and nobody will know who screwed up. Also: The Navy has no height requirement, but you have to be over 6ft tall to get in the USCG. That way if your ship sinks, you can walk back to shore.
  2. 1971 Heavy 2500psi Scott in a suitcase. To be used only if needed because we have to send the bottles out for refill. The FDNY South Bronx guys used "cheaters," which were a bite-down scuba diver's mouth piece adapted to fit the elephant hose. This was in place of the mask because the mask used to fog up. Besides that, there's good air at the floor or if you stick your head behind the nozzle. And: rubber and/or canvas coats, Johnn&Roy helmets, Pull up boots, Edmont Fireball gloves, bunker pants were for winter and you had to buy your own, door chocks and Gerrity light inner-tubed on your helmet. Anything better that you are using today, bear in mind that we old guys are the ones that got it for you.
  3. Yes, I did, my brother, but I ran out of rhyme (at least rhyme that I could post). But the Byrds adapted it to rock and roll. We are an all-hazards service, so almost everything can be applied. Also, I like your post on can use.
  4. There's a time and place for eveything. The can will knock down a lot of fire while waiting for a standpipe to be readied and the line stretched. On the other hand, if the fire is showing in 3 windows with signs of extension to the attic, it may be wiser to leave the can on the rig and help pulling the 2 1/2. Also, Chiefs...don't over-SOP the guys. Give them a little leeway to work their fire. Overly strict SOPs leave the troops no options except for the one you specified. Remember that your SOP was something you dreamed up for what you would do in an imaginary situation. All fires are a little bit different from eachother and the tactics must be flexible to tend to those differences. "To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven" A time for the deck gun, a time for he can A time to break glass, a time for the fan
  5. Where's LAFD's preplan, cids info, MSDS procedure, 1st due's area knowledge? No evidence of that in the video. Where's the general knowledge of chemistry that a FF should have? This would have clued them if they remembered that elements that end in IUM are combustible like TitanIUM. I still hear that the west coast is way ahead of the east coast when it comes to firefighing, but you can't prove it by that video. Maybe the west coast dumbed down the entrance exam before us, and that's what we will look like in a few years.
  6. So, these out of work people they found on craigslist, the welfare roles, Goodwill, unemployment, etc, must be overqualified to take jobs like FF or waiter. The Fire Chief should be doing the interviews. This should be accomplished by firing him and picking him from Goodwill, along with the rest of the menagerie that thought hiring the unimployed to do interviews was a good idea. Our elected government, all branches, all levels has been teter-totering on the edge for quite a while, now. It may be starting to tip too far, now, and may fall into the abyss if we don't fix it. Think before you vote.
  7. Pump the brakes...it will lower the air pressure
  8. History: Bad Karma: A few years ago a member of FDNY who went out on a disabilty made a hell of a search for a possible victim in his volunteer dept. on Long Island. Turns out there was no victim. Made the news. He was arrested for fraud, had to make restitution and lost his pension. Good Karma: A few years ago a member of FDNY who went out on a disabilty made a rescue in his volunteer dept. on Long Island. Made the news. He was arrested for fraud, would have had to make restitution and lose his pension. But the victim was a judge who recused himself from hearing the case. However the judge that actually heard the case was the victims golf partner. The case was dismissed.
  9. The clipboard and an umbrella must be the way to go. I used to hold my clipboard upside down so the writing doesn't run and above my head to write.. Then we got a suburban with a board in back and a lift-up tailgate. That was much better for keeping track of Guests.
  10. Much like my mother's rule, and for that matter every woman's rule for China, bath towels, etc. Buy two clipboards...one for everyday and a good one for when guests come to town. C'mon, helicopper, I bet your nnother had the same rule and strictly enforced it.
  11. Tradition has nothing to do with strategy, tactics, thermal imaging, smooth bore tips, and so on. It is about respect for those who came before us by doing our jobs in a certain manner. It is a jargon that any fireman would quickly recognise as ours. They are not fire trucks, they are Engines and Trucks, and they are housed in quarters on the apparatus floor (not the garage). To test tradition in your firehiuse, try this: Leave a $100 bill and a cupcake on the kitchen counter. Turn around, and the cupcake will be gone. Turn old and gray and the $100 will still be there. Tradition has its place. It doesnt impede progress. It helps us make progress, even at the worst of times. “I have no ambition in this world but one, and that is to be a fireman. The position may, in the eyes of some, appear to be a lowly one; but we who know the work which the fireman has to do believe that his is a noble calling. Our proudest moment is to save lives. Under the impulse of such thoughts, the nobility of the occupation thrills us and stimulates us to deeds of daring, even of supreme sacrifice.” Chief Edward F. Croker
  12. Bin Ladin thought he was going to meet 70 Virgins Instead it was 24 Virginians
  13. LANDSHARK!
  14. No matter what the party, I think I've voted for the "lesser of two evils" for the last 20 years. Once anyone get into congress most of the promises go out the window and they start taking care of themselves first. How can you pass things as long as you are exempt from what you voted for? I don't intend to pursue this conversation any further. Sorry.
  15. Next paragraph: " Now,"said the president, "I'm going back to Washington to see if we can get rid of your Collective Bargaining, your outrageous Pension Plans, and that pesky Union of yours."
  16. Bin Ladin wanted to go to Heaven and meet up with 70 Virgins. Instead he met up with 24 Virginians. Thanks Seal Team 6
  17. Don't drop your guard, my brothers. Islam has declared Jihad long ago and it may not end with Bin Ladin's death. I would be ready for some kind of retaliation on the US by the radicals. Stay aware, Stay Safe.
  18. In 1973, Mamaroneck had a 26ft steel-hulled fireboat outfitted as a fireboat by then Harbormaster Hank Sheridan, also a volunteer fireman. Hank was an ingenious fellow who added a 750gpm pump, permanently installed with a thru-hull suction and bow deck gun. I had the pleasure of working for Hank when I was a kid, and had the pleasure of taking the boat on its sea trials. The pump was so powerful hat the deck gun would push it baclwards and I found myse;f steering with the deck gun. This was overcome by securing a line to the vessel on fire with grapples or by double anchors. Shortly after being commissioned,, the fireboat as going to appear at the Mamaroneck Beach and Cabana Club for my wedding reception, and Hank said he would color the streams like the FDNY big boats. Unfortunately, the club burned down two days before the reception. It was the boat's first "job."
  19. LOL< Barry, but there is s subtle difference in our tactics. My tactics will work, but your's, given a steel hull, might take a while to burn to the waterline. Filling the hull will make the gunwale and the waterline one and the same. It's all because even red nuns have odd green cans.
  20. Rye Fireboat. I think it was homemade by Rye members in the mid 1970's
  21. New Rochelle Fire,Police, and EMS operating for a medical call aboard a cable layer on LI Sound
  22. Boat Fire Tactics: 1. Use copious amounts of water. 2. Fill the burning vessel up to the gunwales. 3. Once burning vessel is no longer visible, allow the fuel fire on the surface to burn out. If you don't have a fireboat, go directly to step #3.
  23. I beg to differ. Rummagers are above the awareness level but below the operations level although they think they are smarter than ops level people. President Obama is trying his best to increase the number of rummager teams across the nation. He heeps raising taxes and national debt. He got us a new health care plan and collective bargaining will soon be a thing of the past. He's ignored the highest gas prices ever. I think that in less than a year all cops, FF's and EMT's will be rummagers too.
