  1. I'm a volunteer firefighter and a union Dpw worker also in the village I grew up in. Our mayor and trustees allow dpw workers to respond to alarms during working hours and it has benefited residents numerous times. The board understands that we are still providing a service to the residents and have always supported our response. I personally think you should use discretion and not abuse the privilege. If the call ends you return to work, if you are working on something important at work you don't respond to every smell and bell, but when there is a serious incident there are not many DPW jobs that take priority.
  2. Yet westchester has the highest taxes in the country and pay nearly $7k a year more on taxes on average but every highway shuts down every rain storm. Time for westchester to rethink some things.
  3. Tyler was such a great kid. Very responsible, humble young man that had an instant impact on all that knew him. He will be terribly missed. Rest in peace Ty Pie!
  4. You chose to use the word volunteer over local fire depts. I'm not the one making this into a career vs volunteer issue, just commenting on your post.
  5. 99subi it says your a volunteer in Westchester, so per your statement is it safe to assume that you only volunteer for perks? Do you only go to drills, meetings etc for food or are you just making another assumption of why volunteers do it?
  6. JFLYNN its funny that the word volunteer comes out here. You and the media can be as critical of volunteers as you want but there are career departments that have called other career departments from far far away instead of the volunteers next door.

  11. First of all most people that join to be volunteers do so when they are somewhat young, including myself, and losap means absolutely nothing to them when they are 18. Most people do it because they want to do it. I have NEVER heard a volunteer say I can't wait to get an suv, I can't wait until I retire so I can collect, or any other "perk" you people are mentioning. P.s I have been volunteering for 11 plus dedicated years. Its never been about perks for me or any other dedicated volunteer I know. I come on this site and see a bunch on NON volunteers knocking us for incentives to keep dedicated members active. Im all for it. When I was an officer our captain would reward the top 3 responders in our company gas cards as an incentive and guess what?... it worked. For all of you vollies stay dedicated, train hard, and stay safe
  12. I know 2 people that got 85's. One is ranked 121 the other ranked 463.
