  1. I hope that none of the runoff went into the eastchester creek and hurt any fish! I'm sure the runoff was a concern and if you have ever been near or in the creek you will know that I was goofin about the fish, good job to all.
  2. With the recent show Hoarders and some recent fires locally it wouldn't be a bad idea to discuss the hazards you might encounter when you are called to the structures packed with years of items. Collyers mansion in a nut shell is about a home in nyc occupied by 2 brothers who hoarded anything and everything. Conditions that were so bad that firefighters had to tunnel their way through the home. Lets use this as a training thread and bring out some points to ponder!
  3. Its a great thing that many of us will appreciate, can't wait to see how this will turn into a big political press release! All dressed up with 3 new rigs like they did us a favor! AMAZING!!!!
  4. I went through the academy with Joe, class 2-87. Wow- we start out 25th yr now. I remember when the garbage men threw his books in the back of the garbage truck when he went back into his house to get something. I've heard that sometimes the dogs eat your homework but the garbage men took it??? Good luck Chief!
  5. In todays Buffalo news it is stating that the settlement might reach 4.1 million $$$! Again because of racism the taxpayers will take the hit and the corrupt politicians just shrug their shoulders!
  6. *NOTE- The FD test was not $75 for out of towners when it was last given, this was a recent change that us dedicated members who put our lives on the line everyday now have to pay when we take promotional exams. This is for all exams issued by MV. I am sure the City has the right to do this but IMO it shows how they feel about us "Out of Towners". On the past FD test they still have not given the physical agility and I find it inlikely it will be given. At this point there are approx 170 "Out of Towners" who have passed the FD test. The city has made $4250.00 with the test fee being $25.00. Now at the $75 rate the city would pocket approx $12,750. Not a bad income to rip off the "Out of Towners"!!! Don't let $75 deter you from taking the exam. MVPD is always hiring and is a busy Police Department with alot going on. They have hired many "Out of Towners" in the past also. Good luck! Unlike the FD you need a clean record for the PD.
  7. Press on pending settlement: Go to Buffalo news .com ,article is there and for some reason I can't copy!
  8. If we didn't put our Bunkers pants in the Bunkroom at night the mice wouldn't have a place to sleep! lol They must getting tired of the kitchen stove!
  9. I am not going to even mention the $ part of the article because they deserve it like many other emergency responders, what really stands out in my mind is that the NYSP requires high standards to be a trooper! Hats off to them, raise standards not lower them is the route all should be taking.
  10. Appointed positions always raise the question if the appointee is qualified,if civil service rules do apply etc. Political patronage sometimes plays a major role in these positions and sometimes qualifications do make a difference with the selection of the persons involved. Its often obvious after a few months if that selected person is in over his/her head by what decisions are made when in the "Hot Seat".
  11. So i guess now that a Firefighter can be" appointed" to lieutenant,a lieutenant to Captain, and now Captain to Chief based on the recent decision.? All without the civil service rules too include written tests throughtout NY State. Interesting decision.
  12. Nice! Many should follow his actions. Just a reminder as mentioned before. civilians who are veterans in street clothes can now salute the flag. This shows that you have served. Recently at a Renegades game I looked around and didn't see anyone saluting, I know that there were vets out there. Be proud !
  13. Congrats go out to the New Haven 20,finally closure for them and their familys! Politicians should look at this case as well as those taxpayers who will be responsible for the cost. Because of corruption in New Haven in city hall this all took place. Reminds me of a city locally! Time will tell.
  14. Best of Luck goes out to retiring Fire Chief Kiernan for his 45 yrs of service to the city of New rochelle, Up through ranks to lead the Department in the right direction. Best of Luck!

  17. BINGO-WELL SAID!!! We still run with 2 man Engine Co's ,12 Firefighters,3 Officers on a 1st Alarm assignment.
  18. Most Departments in Westchester could handle a small General Aviation (GA) Aircraft going down. We have had motor vehicle accidents on our roadways that were more horrific then when a small plane has gone down. In the past years there have been many crashes all over the County. Take the time and look at the sky at night especially if you are on the sound or the Hudson. The big difference IMO with a large frame aircraft is the resources and coordination needed during a large frame event. Look how things go sometimes just on a buliding fire. The incident commanders will have their hands full and the need for pre-planning,training etc. is a must. A few years before Sully brought the plane down in the Hudson I mentioned to my students in an ARFF class I was teaching that a large frame aircraft will someday go down in the Hudson. In that case they had the resources to handle the situation too include many water taxi's that were some of the 1st on the scene. This could be a good training session here so post some of your thoughts that could make this a good training tool for others.
  19. As of recent according to the EEOC "Retaliation" charges in the work force are the most common charges that the EEOC investigates and they appear to be very common in the work force. Politicians and persons in positions of authority (Fire Chiefs)are not exempt and many times too include in the Fire Service political immunity may not apply to them.

  22. Ive witnessed 2 man engine companys for 23 years, all with negative results!!!
  23. My thoughts and prayers go out to the familys involved. A tragic situation for all. Keep in mind the emergency responders who have recently responded in newburgh to other untimely deaths of both adults and children.stay strong guys and keep the fatih! JJC
  24. Last week the announcement for both the Captains and Lieutenants exam were posted for June 4, 2011. As many of the members on the job read over the announcement they all had a big surprise! The city is now requiring that you are a City resident for at least 1 year prior to the test. They also are requiring that for the Lts job you need to be an EMT. For the Captains you need to be an EMT-D. Sources say that this has not been a practice for many years if ever! The EMT issue was thrown out 4 yrs ago because some felons may not ever be a EMT which would unfairly keep them from being an officer. Pretty interesting that the test is in approx 70 days from this writing. Oh,well-maybe next time I can take the test!
  25. Hats off to the the members who stepped up and researched the issue, Another Hats off to NYS civil service who stepped in and ADVISED MOUNT VERNON TO AMEND ITS TEST ANNOUNCEMENT to delete the residence requirement. This whole issue is obvious where it all started from!!! More to follow.
