  1. the brigade is made up of a various group of working plant members,they vary from security officers to other persons who may work in different sections of the plant. they do train on a frequent basis and are pretty knowledgable of the plant and its systems. some of them are involved with the hazmat section becaue of their experience in the plant they are an asset to the brigade. pretty impressive fire systems, they don't hold back spending $ for safety.
  2. the airforce is a great way to start your fire service career,as of last fall the airforce was downscaling and according to the chief of fire protection the fd is taking a hit. the other option is the air national guard, i wrote an article "starting your fire service career" to be submitted to firehouse magazine when they start hiring again basically using the military as a good way to get your career going. i was 18 and went into the USAF as a firefighter , its a 4 year enlistment but you get alot out of it. the Lt from fdny who is in Iraq is a frind of mine in my unit who started his career with the navy. several fdny firefighters and city firefighters throughout the nation started out as air force firefighters. the air national guard- you would attend basic training in texas and then you would go to school to be a firefighter at Goodfellow air force base in texas also,you would go through 10 weeks of training which would include structural firefighting,vehicle extrication,ems,then CFR (crash,fire,rescue) many benefits come along with the military especially getting the nationally certified classes that you would take while in either active duty air force or the air nation guard. pm me if you need any additional info!

ITS PLAIN AND SIMPLE.DON'T DO IT!!!! NOT TOO MANY YEARS AGO RIGHT HERE IN WESTCHESTER A MEMBER OF A LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT DIED FROM INJURYS WHEN HE FELL OFF A RIG,A VERY WELL LIKED AND RESPECTED INDIVIDUAL WHO LOST HIS LIFE,WE SHOULD ALL LEARN FROM OTHER TRAGIC EVENTS AND REMIND OURSELVES THAT SAFETY FOR ALL IS THE # 1 PRIOITY EITHER AT AN EMERGENCY OR NOT AT AN EMERGENCY! IF YOU SEE SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT THEN SPEAK UP AND SAY SOMETHING! BE SAFE-HUDSON
  4. snorkel 1 was a very active piece in the MV inventory- because it was in service for so many years I would't be wrong by saying that it saw more fire than most apparatus in westchester,at the time of retirement it was believed that it was going to the dominican republic. the snorkel gave us the advantage of fighting fires where wires weree a concern,it was also a great when we had a storefront or more burning because the bucket could be put right on the sidewalk and knock down some heavy fire. the snorkel was a tricky unit to use,you really had to have it together when operating the bucket because the "joystick" was touchy. many of the senior guys that were assigned to the unit knew the best way of operating it,driver it was another story-the turning radius was not good so you had to often make wide swings when responding and really be used to driving it. many times I feel that the snorkel was missed at recent fires especially when you go to the surround and drown mode which happens often in MV>

  6. a few years back i took a class taught by Lt Mike Wilbur (FDNY 27 Truck) about this topic-it was a very informative class with some past incidents used as examples of why you should not respond (running red) to relocate-in one case which happened upstate ny where I believe where Lt Wilbur may live a compnay was relocating to another community and the were "running red", the apparatus broad sided a POV with kids in it IFO an amusement park and I can't recall if people died or not bad the outcome was not good. Its unfortunate that alot of depts. still run red for non-emergency calls and yes it is a tough call sometimes on what is and what is not an emergecy,sometimes its damned if you do and damned if you don't! In the community that I live in I always see Empire state ambulance running red going to do non-emergency transports-one night I cfollowed them to the health care facility to see if they were actually on an emergency and they weren't. normally I wouldn't care but the JACK*** driving cut me off ! be safe!

James, if i could do it all over again i would not have came back to NY< i lived in the south for almost 4 yrs while serving in the USAF, if it wasn't for having family back here i most certainly would have stayed south. if you can land a job down there stay! ny is way too exspensive for a firefighter to live, try to get on down there and enjoy the sun and sand!!!!!!!!!!
  8. ff jeff cool will be released from helen hayes hospital tomorrow @10 am.jeff was one of the firefighters injured at the tragic fire on 1/23 in the bronx. his hard work and determination at helen hayes hospital helped him get out of the center weeks prior than originally thought.way to go jeff! welcome home!!!!!!!!
  9. if a job is offered,take it! its not like this happens everyday to get hired on with a fire dept. you can always go elsewhere once you are in the system!!!

  11. its hard to believe that the county airport does not employ a "fulltime" staffed dept. with the amount of flights that go in and out of there on a daily basis i know that its only a matter of time before a major aircraft incident happens.On an airfield fire protection is a must regardless of the classification the faa gives to the field, when you deal with aircraft you deal with large amounts of fuel(depending on the size of the bird) and a strong possibility of an mci incident. the wc airport has some nice up to date arff rigs but like anything else the manpower is needed to effectively attack and extinguish a fuel fed fire. The other part is when the incident happens people need to be rescued and time is an important point here. the automatic mutual plan is not going to have help there within a short period of time. the surrounding depts do respond in and may have a good response time but not like the time that it would take a arff rig to get to the ramp or runway where the incident may take place. this is a problem throughout the nation and i often wonder if the faa is really on top of things. just a thought- b safe!
  12. one of the best equipted boats in the northern westchester area is 18 marine from stony point,it has an on board pump with deluge guns and is available,it was purchased last year with a price tag of over $200k.when it comes to the river help from other depts is a must. if a jurisdiction gets a report of a river incident (fire,boating mishap etc) more than one dept should be sent. the marine association of westchester was organized a few years ago to better coordinate any incidents out there but the unfortunate thing is that some of the Incident commanders out there wait to see "what they got out there" before they activate the plan. i personally have been on the river for over 20 yrs as a fisherman and have been involved with some serious rescues with life threatening injurys that could have been tragic if myself and other pleasure boaters didn't get involved. its important for all depts to know who is available and what they are available with.police agencys should also be more aware of who and what is available.depts must realize that the vessel that they might have may not be sea worthy out there at certain times. a 17' boat does not belong out there when conditions are bad. it does get bad out there and to put 3 firefighters in a row boat with 30knot winds out of the NW will only put those members in harms way.some depts have done the right thing with up grading to sea worthy rescue boats,hats off to you guys! it can get real bad out there and its no ball game. i might have opened a can of worms here but it could be a good thread. be safe-hudson
  13. most fisherman use marine #68 for fishing,#16 for emergencys only,#9 for normal useage while in motion or "on their way" and the $100,000 fish was not caught! biggest was about 21lbs worth about $1000.it was a fun tournament. over 700+ applicants.
  14. Instead of worrying about the members of the FDNY wearing green berets the person who made this choice should be worrying about giving the members of FDNY some green-in other words a CONTRACT! THE REAL GREEN THAT THEY ALL DESERVE.
  15. I recieved word this afternoon that ff cool will be returning to Rockland Co. tomorrow. Visisting him this morning jeff mentioned that the doctors might release him to Helen Hayes hospital in Rockland co. for rehab sometime soon. Jeff has made some big strides in recovery over the past few days which appears to be one of the reasons that the doctors are allowing him to be transported to HH Hospital. Evidently the doctors decided this morning to let jeff out of St Barnabos to HH for rehab! Good news for the Cool family!
  16. if 3 trucks go into service in MV it may correct the mutual aid problem as far as truck companys coming into MV but it will create another problem, 3 LESS FIREFIGHTERS AT THE FIRE SCENE! IN OTHER WORDS IF MV GETS A JOB THE 3RD TRUCK WOULD NOT BE SENT TO THE FIRE THIS WAY 3 MEN AND "MAYBE" AND OFFICER WILL BE IN SERVICE TO PROTECT THE CITY!
  17. thousands today lined the streets of pearl river to pay their respects to Lt. Bellew. with the frigid weather biting you the members of many surrounding depts.as well as FDNY members stood at attention to pay tribute to one of FDNY's fallen. A strong showing of support for the family and friends of the fallen comrade. ironically tonights pick four for the ny lottery was 5555, the signal transmitted in FDNY for a lodd. rest in peace Lt Bellew.
  18. WHEN I WORKED THERE THEY SAT YOU IN A CHAIR AND TOLD YOU TO SAY 10-4. YOU SAID 10-4 AND THEY SAID,"WHEN CAN YOU START"? THE OTHER QUESTION WAS-HOW MANY NO-DOZE PILLS CAN YOU EAT BEFORE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE HAVING A HEART ATTACK?BACK THEN YOU WORKED BY YOURSELF!

Mount Vernon's foam 1 has been out of service for over 5 years now,a foam unit has been stationed at fulton ave Station #2 because of the gasoline terminals located on the south side of the city. Somewhere in the "very" near future a foam unit will be put back into service at Sta#2. The unit is an oshkosh CFR truck which carrys 1500 gals of water and 180 gals of foam which can be discharged from a roof turret or bumper turret or a handline. Hopefully it will be available soon once the unit is aquired,crews trained, and additional equipment(radio's etc) installed.
  20. FF Christian Engledrum of Ladder Co. 61 in the Bronx died while serving with the Army National Guard in Iraq.Sgt. Engledrum of the Bronx was killed Monday. A firefighter for 5 1/2 years with FDNY and a former police officer is survived by his wife and 2 children.More is posted on the fdny/insider website as well as on the local news stations and news papers. May he rest in peace!

Tues 12/7,Wed 12/8 from 1400-1700,1900-2100 Funeral services Thurs 12/9 1100 hrs At Church of St Benedicts located at 2969 Otis Ave in the Bronx. My understanding is that this will be a full Fire Dept/Military Funeral.
  22. the reason mt vernon is getting it is because they have a large amount of fuel storage on the south side of the city,the unit might have been scrapped at brookfield if fdmv didn't seek to get it,as far as the unit being centrally located,the foam trailer was originally @ the FTC and then relocated to fairview so it can be dispatched asap instead of waiting for crews to respond from their homes to go and get the unit ready to respond, its all about response time with such as specialized unit,the incident the other night proved that the fairview firefighters can respond immediatly without a delay.the only thing that might delay the response is if the IC doesn't call for it in a timely fashion.as far as the airport being shut down,the airports are required to have a certain amount of water/agent available as well as a response time on the ramp or runways. Like I had mentioned before there is a calculation for thw whole response package on the airports,it does amaze me how the county airport doesn't have full time coverage for the airport when the birds are flying but that is all in the guidelines i belive that are set up and monitored by the FAA. I am going to try to get more info on this,the units at the airport are up to date modern crash rigs that are ready to respond if an incident does happen. the airport operations crew does oversee the whole emergency response criteria.
  23. montrose went to 60 control around 1985,after years of being answered by the peekskill answering service the time was right to go to 60 control because of a few reasons 1) the answering service could only blow the whistle which in turn activated the home alerts and minimal amount of pagers that were assigned to members at that time.the 1st member in the firehouse was required to pick up the "red" phone and speak to the operator on the other end who would give you the location of the incident as well as the name of the residence where the emergency might have been, the "radioman" then would re-transmit the alarm over the montrose base radio,he would be rerquired to stay on the radio until another radioman showed up,this was a problem because many times a driver would be stuck on the radio! 2) 2 remote radios were available -one being in the fulgums house on orchard st where madge fulgum (remote 1) would transmit the alarm and monitor the radio,she did this for years since her husband fritz was a chief in the early 60s. a second remote (remote2) was usually put in the chiefs home and was either operated by the chief or the chiefs wife, this was the method for years, By going to 60 control the alarm was transmitted immediatly by the radio operators at control which activated the tones as well as the sirens,this method was welcomed because it did not tie up the 1st driver on the radio which in turn allowed an engine to respond quicker that the old method of 1st man in has to be on the radio.enough history for now! amazing how far things have gone over 20 years,now the calls come over the nextels!
