what nfpa standards do you all feel we all should be following? I know it is hard to follow but lets put a list together on the one's that can easily be followed and enforced for safety reasons.
-
just wondering if departments throughout the area go by the NFPA standards, do you pick and choose the standards that you want to apply to your department or do you go by them all? In other words, can you enforce one standard and not the other?
-
maybe they might get a good deal on the NFPA 1582 physicals with the new firehouse!!!!!!!!

In 1982 when I got out of the air force I worked there doing the summer program, it can lead into a fulltime position depending if there are openings, its not a bad thing to have on the resume also.in the long run i would go for it. It was interesting to work there. At this present time a friend of mine is working there so if you have any questions pm me.

where was that? BAGHDAD?

lets not forget about the class "K'' extinguishers, these are important when it comes to trying to put out a deep fryer fire. we have them on all the rigs in MV and yes they have been used!!!

For those of you who don'y know the response------ Telephone Alarm-3 engines,2 trucks Rescue 1, working deputy chief Breakdown of manpower--- 3 engines = 6-7 men 2 trucks = 6 men Rescue 1 = 1 man deputys driver = 1 man ________ majority of time 14 men subtract chiefs aide (1) 1st/2nd due mpo (2) you are down to 11 firefighters. 3rd due engine is the "FAST TEAM" (SMOKE SCREEN) you are down to 9 firefighters. with 9 guys you "make do with what you got", a 2nd alarm is transmitted and 2 more guys(new fast team) show up on the last engine but you are still below a safe working amount of members. a large majority of the time the 5th engine is out of service so we won't even go there with that. bottom line is that we bust our butts but you can only do so much when the odds are against you from the time the alarm is transmitted, throw in that a member might get hurt in the initial stages of the alarm, throw in the fact that a report might be recieved that a person is missing or trapped somewhere in the structure. we all have assigned tasks to do on the fireground and many times they are hard to carry out because you are re-assigend to do another task. another point- 45 minutes or less how many guys are able to actively help themselves if they had to because they are so fatigued or spent that you are only a body on the fireground? we can go on and on from here ! be safe guys because its only a matter of time!!!

this information is better than reading about a favorite recipe for a fruit cake, or where's the best diner or do you wear fruit of the loom or BVD! this is an ongoing problem that may not be resolved ever-however,maybe someday the right person might read what goes on in the lower westchester area when it comes to the mutual aid and its abuse. i say time and time again that it is only at matter of time that someday the worse will happen, i pray that i am wrong but the writing is on the wall. it might not even happen in MV because many other depts are understaffed, mis managed etc. ff 402- someday you might be here putting facts up about where you are involved with the fd. in fact maybe something might go wrong when members of your community fire dept are in MV trying to bail us out!

after the big push on nims I hope that whoever had the thought of making this mandatory by september will do the same for some of the more important courses such as fast, fire fighter survival etc-these are the things that we should be teaching as a mandatory requirement to be a firefighter, yes, nims is an important part of the job but i still feel that the hands on back to basics stuff is a priority and is put off to the side by many!!!!
-
can ya fish there?
-
its only a matter of time before the worst happens here in westchester,i hope i am wrong and i pray that i am wrong but the odds are against us!!! the next day after the worst happens it will be old news and things will not change!!! bottom line is to try to be as safe as possible and make it home at the end of the shift or emergency!
-
OK, for some of you that are up on this stuff is it a mandatory course for all to take?
-
years ago you had to have a clean record, high school education, drivers license, pass a written exam, pass a psych exam, as times have changed most of the above mentioned are no longer a requirement! (some municipalitys still have strict hiring standards) which only benefits the job

I am sure that SOG's,training and all of the above will be answered soon. hudson

john vv- it pertains to both career and volunteer! good point! if a career firefighter is not going by the standard then shame on him,his supervisor and whoever else is supposed to be running the show.

call the nys office of fire prevention/control, they can tell you what courses from the state that are IFSAC,PRO BOARD, PROZAC, ETC. I RECENTLY CALLED THEM BECAUSE I NEEDED HAZ MAT TECH FOR MY MILITARY FD AND I HAD TAKEN IT FROM OFPC- ITS NOT ACCEPTED AS A IFSAC/PRO BOARD FROM THE STATE AND THEY WILL EXPLAIN.
-
if a dept does not go by the standard i am not sure who would be the right agency to contact, maybe PESH,NIOSH,OSHA OR POSSIBLY JACOBY & MYERS!!!!!!!
-
muellerk-there is no eason to "lighten up" if guys want to act like jack***** with the sirens and look like idiots and then want to say that they want to be called professionals then they should "smarten up"!!! YES MAYBE A LITTLE TOOT HERE N THERE BUT DON'T BE GETTING YOUR ROCKS OFF BECAUSE OF A SIREN.

about 10 years ago at a parade i realized how ridiculous the fd looked in the parade, between the old ladys and the kids crying the fire departments involved looked like a bunch of hoople heads. are you impressing someone with the sirens? no you are not, its bad enough that 1/2 of us in the fire service suffer from hearing loss due to machinery, sirens etc , just think about the elderly or the infants how they must feel? i saw it again this weekend and i'm still not impressed with the sirens/air horns that heard.
-
Are you in a dept that has failed to recognize that under laws for the fire service they are required to establish training standards or object to give members the NFPA 1582 physicals? I know that depts or municipalities still decline the members of both the volunteer force as well as career force the above mentioned. Some fire service leaders as well as politicians feel that they have been doing it a certain way for years and that everything is ok. well, for those good ole boys out there, open your eyes and look at reality. the good ole days are behind us and if you or your dept falls into the old time thing you better open your eyes and wake up ! these rules, standards etc are in place for all of us.

A little bird whispered in my ear over the weekend that the veterans administration has elected to make building #13 located on the VA montrose campus as a homeless shelter. word has it that 100 homeless will be moving into the area sometime soon. people, don't get me wrong i am a compassionate person for all. being a veteran myself i know that many vets out there are in need in many ways. bringing homeless into the VA may bring on other problems. will ccvac be burn't out because of the additional calls that may be generated from this facility? are any of these people going to be sex offenders? ( a day care center is located not too far from the building mentioned) 8 additional police officers have been hired recently by the VA admin. what about the manpower for the brother firefighters at the VA? any increase in the manpower or mention of job security for those guys? alot of stuff is going unanswered here and the hamlet of Montrose might be the one to suffer the consequences! from people who live up in orange county the facility known as camp LaGuardia has made a bad impact on the local communitys there. someone dropped the ball here and I hope that my thoughts are wrong and that the VA campus remains the great facility it has been over the years.

standards on beards, long hair have been established over the years because of safety concerns, for some of us who happen to have a larger facial area because of loss of hair its not a problem, for some firefighters who elect to wear their hair long against the rules of the depts that they work for as a firefighter are only putting themselves in harms way and for the depts who let those members get away with it are only opening themselves up for a potential lawsuit.remember-alot of these standards have been drawn up because of past incidents where members have been hurt/killed at the fire scene. but then again i guess you can't get hurt or burn't if you don't go into the structure when it is on fire!!!!!!!!!!!!
