  3. Date:8/22/06 Time: 2131hrs Location: 349 Union Ave X Jackson St Frequency: 154.145 Units Operating: E-5, 3, 2, 4, TL-3, TL-1(acting) L-2, Res-1, Batt.(Car-2) Description Of Incident: 2 1/2 STORY FRAME FIRE ON 1ST FL. 2-L/S/O. ENG-2 FAST. Writer: hudson144, FDMV168 FIRE WAS IN A 2 1/2 STORY WOODFRAME. FIRE IN THE LIVING ROOM WHICH HAD SELF VENTED OUT THE FRONT PICTURE WINDOW AS THE 1ST DUE CREWS STRETCHED THE LINE. A QUICK KNOCK DOWN WITH NO EXTENSION TO THE ABOVE!!! GOOD JOB!
  4. as mentioned by Mr benz-emergency responders are getting hit out on the roadways, chances are that alot of the accidents that may be minor may only require an ambulance and an eng. In many cases where manpower is an issue 2 man eng co is not sufficent when it comes to working on anything.Even with an officer on board the 2 man eng co. has the mpo who has his assigned task of driving and operating the pump if needed. the nozzleman has his assignment to stretch a line an either stand by or attack the fire, being that we are talking about parkway responses lets say its a car fire. As the 1 man hoseman trys to attack the fire the officer decides to help out and gets on the hoseline with the other member. Now there is no one watching the store. the cars are still buzzing by as 70+ mph and rubber necking. the engine co is in a bad position of being wacked by oncoming traffic.Apparatus must be used as a block to protect our own, this not only standstrue on the highways but even in the local streets. its important to have additional manpower on the scene to help resolve the incident, yes you may tie up another rig but whats more important the rig or our lives?
  5. fdmv up until recently sent an eng with 2 ff and a officer,as safety issues were brought to the attention of the supervisors of the dept. the assignment now stands for 1eng,1 trk and the rescue, something long overdue which needed to be changed!!!
  6. some promotions are a joke even in the career side.I know stuff that goes on that I could not even post on here, promotions should be based on- work ethic, experience, knowledge of the job,as well as if the person actually will be able to lead his crew. sometimes the civil service laws in place are not in the best interest of the job. an interview of the persons eligible for promotion should be in place and the persons doing the interview should keep in mind that the person that you promote will be responsible for others lives!!!
  7. In some cases the fast teams that are in place are just a smoke screen, just because you have 2 firefighters standing IFO the fire building doesn't mean that a true team is in place. The initial stages of the fire are important to all especially to the victims you are trying to rescue. I have seen many incidents where the fast team shows up and the fire is out! For those depts that just put 2 firefighters IFO the structure thinking that they have satisfied the rule they are only hurting themselves. Trining is important on how to rescue one of your own. Every firefighter that is on the so called fast teams needs the training. I know that manpower is a major problem for most these days but the team is not beneficial to anyone if they don't know what they are doing. Tools and equipment for the rescue are needed also, TIC,ropes, stokes basket to mention a few, placement of ground ladders for bailouts from the floors above, this all comes into play when it is time to get out or time to get someone out!
  8. join the armed forces! they will give you one for free!lol
  9. westchester organized? its not the fault of DES or 60 control-Too many depts still have the mentality that "NOBODY" is going to tell us how to run our dept. even if it benefits "ALL" WITHIN THE COUNTY!!!
  10. huzz- if you read my post it has alot about mutual aid and if i remember correctly 9/11 was mutual aid. AND IN MY POST IT IS A VERY STRONG POINT ABOUT MINDING YOUR OWN STORE BEFORE GOING TO A MUTUAL AID CALL. Its not whining its stating some facts.
  11. jason, i left out alot more than that but it would only cause a problem, some fast teams are nothing but a "SMOKE SCREEN" just to cover the mandatory saying that a SMOKE SCREEN I mean a fast team is ready to go!!!
  12. a prime example for being somewhere we shouldn't be is exactly how I felt on 9/11. For some depts that were relocated into the buroughs of ny city I will probably piss some people off by saying this but I don't care. On 9/11 westchester county was sent into the northern bronx to cover. Now I know that many depts do not have enough manpower to cover their own districts from 8am-5 pm and if they do have some manpower it may be some senior members or younger inexperienced jr members. i know first hand a dept that I am associated with had no right going down there. To give you an example I know that the many of the depts are not even set up for stand pipe use not to mention that many depts then didn't even have the right connections to establish a water supply if needed because the threads on the hydrants are different from most water sources in westhester co. this may vary from dept-dept but for many it is true. Part of 9/11 also was that in the early stages of 9/11 each community in westchester co. could have been hit from some type of terrorism. We all wanted to help but sometimes we have to take a step back and say "should we commit ourselves to something that we might not handle"? please by no means this is not bashing anyone or dept that went flying down there but honestly sit back and ask yourselves if you had a job on the 6th floor of an occupied multiple dwelling did you have the right people with you to take care of a situation any of your members are not familiar with? be safe!
  13. FAST TEAMS- SHOULD NOT BE "TEAMS OF TWO" STANDING THERE WITH THEIR THUMBS STUCK WHERE THE SUN DOESN'T SHINE WITH NO TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT, IN OTHER WORDS A TRUE FAST TEAM SHOULD BE A TEAM OF 6+ WITH ALL THE RECOMMENDED FIRE,SAFETY,SEARCH TOOLS AVAILABLE. SOME DEPTS CALL IT A FAST TEAM JUST TO GET BY, I KNOW THAT THIS COULD BE IN ANOTHER FORUM BUT IT MOST LIKELY WOULD GET THE BOOT BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW WHAT DEPARTMENTS THE FINGERS WILL BE POINTING AT. BE SAFE!
  14. its up to each and everyone of us not to let that happen regardless where u are from! the term'' accident waiting to happen'' certainly applies here. come on n smarten up.if you are the driver in a situation refuse to move the rig,if something bad did happen you are the one who will be responsible for the consequences!!! BY THE WAY-I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE DEPT IS FROM AND DON'T CARE TO KNOW-YOU CAN DELETE THE PICTURE AND IT IS STILL A GOOD TOPIC TO OPEN SOME EYES OF OTHERS OUT THERE BOTH CAREER AND VOL.
  15. Imagine this-you were first due yesterday and you figure its the average run of the mill gas leak call, SURPRISE! As you are blown clear across the street and hopefully survived the blast I am sure that you might reconsider how you might have handled the emergency. Did you have all of your PPE on? Was the correct assignment dispatched? Did you follow the guidelines that are in place by your dept for handling gas emergencys? Approx 2 hrs ago I went to a gas leak,we were requested by con-ed, basement had a good concentration of gas in it. the Con ed guy found a leak in the pipe in the basement the size of a quarter and actually heard it from the 1st floor. were we prepared-yes, what if yesterdays incident didn't happen? would we have been complacent? possibly? think about it!!! a quote from the con ed guy "ANOTHER 5 MINS THIS PLACE WOULD HAVE BEEN LEVELED!"
  16. they may catch the eye but the important thing is to use a rig as a block!!!
  17. hope it comes with people to man it!!!!!
  18. Imagine if they arrested for illegal blue lights, the jails would be overflowing!!!!
  19. medal day- I see some guys in westchester county with more ribbons on their dress blues than a 25 yr member of some of the busiest companys in fdny, i must have missed some of the fires/rescues posted here on EMT BRAVO!!???????????????????????????????????????????????????
  20. Through proper sizeup and a complete report from the interior crews the panic button can be avoided, The old saying that it is easier to turn crews around than to make up for lost time does stand true but in the initial stages of the incident the IC should evaluate the situation and communicate with his/her crews before turning an incident into a real cluster ****. Take a breathe or 2 and think about what is going on,it appears that lately the whole portion of the county needs to get involved in some minor incidents and its really not needed.Am I monday night quarterbacking? nah-it might be monday night common sense!!! be safe!
  21. LA County FD-thongs!
  22. if the board of fire commissioners, wardens, trustees etc were made up of citizens from the communitys then the fire depts would have a rude awakening. Just think of ordinary people spending money wisely- no $50,000 chiefs cars,no $1,000,000 tower ladders,no $8000 inspections,no duplication of apparatus(neighboring dept has same rig and never uses it) department might be a little more accountable for the taxpayers money being spent!!!
  23. They are legal when you put a HOTDOG on a stick and sit there with a smile!!!
  24. I always wondered why there is not a fulltime CFR dept, it basically comes down to the classification of the airport,in this case the airport does not qualify for a fulltime dept. After a few trips to the air port I can say that I am impressed with the airport ops personel. They are all CFR trained and take their jobs very serious. The apparatus is top knotch and the system of ops people responding appears to work, what I do see is what happens after the airport units run out of agent, this is where the coordination of mutual aid needs to be carefully planned out.
  25. ok this can be good,I recently sat in on the table top drill at the airport and I saw many things that needed to be fixed. Hopefully from trial and error today might have been good to bring out the areas that need to be addressed where they might be dificient. I could not attend the drill but would love to hear about it here on this forum. Please try to keep it positive without finger pointing or bashing. Through constuctive comments others might learn and things may change----let it rip!!!
