  1. hey walter, i ate 2 chili dogs the other day and boy did they ''repete'' on me lol!
  2. firefighter survival would be my choice.
  3. hopefully the FFI program would be changed to include the much needed survival training,do you make the FFI class longer? maybe they can cut the time down for hazmat and weapons of mass destruction and replace it with survival which certainly in my opinion is a priority! and to reply to wmurph- the fires aren't any hotter in mt vernon than in tarrytown so if you want to cut corners for training because you volunteer in your community you really need to step back and re-think what you are saying!!! be safe.
  4. white plains still has a pretty strict background invest as well as requirements that must be met before being appointed, psych test, criminal invest to mention a few!
  5. may be they should have tried a KARATE CHOP!!!
  6. ok,so what did we all learn today? pass it on for others to learn by! TY

Again we in the fire service have broke the 100 mark, hopefully this will be it for the year. As we all try to make our job safer it appears that the odds are always against us. Manpower, bad decisions made on the fire ground, accidents, heart attacks too mention a few are like the black cloud that hangs over all of us everywhere. Hopefully 2007 will be a better year! be Safe! jjc

    stat- u funny!!!!
  9. FDMV= 3876 TOTAL FOR 2006
  10. coat and helmet stolen? I can top that-HOW ABOUT A 95' AERIAL PLATFORM !!!
  11. ok- i am approaching 47 yrs old, i have alomost 30 yrs in the fire service, probably a little older n wiser than some on this thread today, with walter being an exception, when we were kids we rode around in the back of pickup trucks doing 60 mph. we had no infant car seats, seat belts were those shining buckles that you burnt your a** on in the summer when you sat on them, a DWI was unheard of, kids rode wherever they wanted in the car. If you were 6 yrs old you could ride shotgun not having to worry about an airbag deployment, if you had a convertable(RAGTOP) you sat on the rear dash board like you were in the ticker tape parade (1969) GOTTA BELIEVE-NY METS. if you wore a bicycle helmet your buddies called you a geek. IF you didn't ride in the trunk of a car to get into the drive Inn movie you were a chicken, dad would let you drive sitting on his lap-the list goes on--- do we still do this stupid stuff? hell no,why? because it is a proven fact that it is not safe, how did we learn that it was unsafe? fatalities!!! how did the fire service change over the years? COMMON SENSE and fatalities!!! enough on this one. be safe...
  12. ladder12-even on the career side fast teams are a smoke screen depending on where you are. 2 guys standing IFO the structure with no fast training whatsoever is a joke. thats 2 less guys doing the much needed work on the fireground. I am in favor of fast team but only when they are done correctly. just putting 2 guys IFO the bldg to satisfy a law does nothing for anyone!!!
  13. chris- as a police officer you hit the nail on the head- in laymans terms-NO,NO,NO. Riding on the tailboard, hosebed etc is illegal, for those of you out there say that "NFPA is only a recomondation" then I would like to know where the info was gatthered a few years ago when the chief of a NYS fire dept was put in jail because of the live burn where the firefighter was killed when he got trapped on the #2 floor of the private dwelling that the dept was using for the live fire training. The info used in court was from NFPA, yes they are guidelines, yes some of them might be almost impossible to follow but in many cases such as where to ride on a fire apparatus it is pretty cut n dry! be safe!
  14. going back to this past summer,a picture was posted of an engine loaded with members on top of the engine in the hose bed. boy did that dept take a beating.(rightly so) anyway- if it was a 4th of july parade would it be ok to let UNCLE SAM and others to ride on the hose bed because it was the 4th of july? I don't think so. There are accidents and there are "AVOIDABLE ACCIDENTS'' Thats why this thread pertains to all of us because it comes down to the safety of all! Be safe!
  15. here we go again, when a serious issue is brought up and some don't like the correct, legal, common sense answer then we get get bashed!!! if you are the driver of the rig you would be a fool to even move because its gonna be your a** in the sling when all goes wrong!!!
  16. thats great news, I need more leg room when I fly, hate that cramped feeling!!!
  17. sending units out for mutual aid is more than just sending the rig, chief officers should be aware that they have interior qualified firefighters.I recently saw a stand by crew with its senior members standing by. Not pointing fingers but the dept can refuse to supply mutual aid if they are already committed with another company at the scene. this is for everyones benefit including the community involved. Don't take me wrong because I know someday my day will come when its time to pass off the interior work to the younger firefighters.
  18. when you send the mutual aid out with an eng/trk who's watching the store? if you can't take care of home on a normal day you shouldn't be sent to take care of someone else's !!!!
  19. I have seen first hand what happens when you put guys on the bus at the fire scene,THEY DON'T GET OFF THE BUS!!!
  20. it appears that the career academy is at its 20th year, what year were you there and how many in your class? class 2-87 (16 members)
  21. Gotta love those chili dogs!!!
  22. one of the biggest things that I want to mention here is that a protocall should be in place for the other agencies that would need to be involved incase of a major a/c incident. EG; to mention a few, dep, health dept, coroners office, coast guard,FAA,NTSB,news agency-assigned to a PIO, OEM,military police (mil a/c). OFPC.SEMO, TOWN SUPERVISOR,MAYOR,food services, logistics- porta potties at the scene, fuel personnel-reservice of the rigs at the scene, EMS, HAZ-MAT,utilities,finances,mash tents, as you can see this can get pretty deep. it would be a ongoing incident so the help would be needed!
  23. as one of the ARFF instructors my students often hear me say "it can and will happen Here in westchester" some depts have the responsibility to respond the the county airport and some don't. when you look at the sk( day and night )you can see over your fire district why it might happen anywhere in westcchester co. the amt of flights out of westchester may open your eyes not to mention that many a/c from the other major airfields are using westchester co as a holding pattern, flight path etc. hopefully we never see a large frame a/c come down because regardless where it happens a majority of the depts in westchester will have their work cut out for them! be safe! jjc
  24. oh boy.here we go!!! throughout the nation emergency responders are killed in situations such as this, recently a change in the response was put out in the dept that I work for basically because we need to "block" the scene for our own people. Also an engine co with 2 firefighters and an officer is not adaquate to take care of a situation such as a car fire or MVA. By undersaffing the apparatus the officer who is ultimately the IC has to get involved leaving no one to watch over the scene. how many times have you been on the roadway and another accident occurs because of rubber neckers doing 60+ mph. the highway safety class teaches the blocking method. most police agencys have had their close calls on these highways. everytime you watch video clips with cops on highways you see what happens. if it was me,i would leave the rig where it was and the officer could "book me"! be safe!
