  1. the 2 incidents that i was referring to was from this year (2007) The TIC can be used on the first crews going in,yes if you can't see you crawl, when using the TIC your basics still have to be followed. If there is indeed a fire burning through the floor from the basement a well trained ff using the TIC correctly will notice the high temp on the screen of the TIC. Thats the importance also of being trained on the tool that you have. yes sounding the floor is key but that all falls in under following the basics. In some cases you may not even realize that the fire is in the basement.
  2. just reading the most recent and up to date of LODD on the USFA site I want to mention that of the 18 deaths already this year 2 of them were from firefighters falling through the floor. as we chat here about basement fires I want to open this to basement fires in general. Just to mention that the first in line or crew should have a TIC. By using the TIC as a primary tool as you enter the structure you might find that the floor in front of you might be burn't through such as the 2 mentioned in the USFA report. while were at it a scan above you is a priority also.
  3. i would say something but the last time i did all hell broke loose, be safe!
  4. must not be an interesting topic????????
  5. mary, better known to most of us here in montrose as "mother mary" was an active person here in the community. raising 7 children here with her deceased husband "pop" Jackson. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and community hearted person. she will be missed by all! Rest in peace.
  6. with opening day of striper season being mar 16th on the hudson what depts along the hudson have their marine units available. when do the boats get put in and when do they take them out? Looking for info on the rockland co units also.
  7. with the hudson being popular for fisherman I have noticed the increase in the use of the river from mid march-jun. many boaters don't consider the boating season open until memorial day. the avid fishermen out there do not care about weather conditions, rain, sleet n snow and they are out there. for those that don't put their boats in the water till jun they miss out on 2 1/2 months of boating. from jun-sept they sit on the boats in the campground and enjoy themselves! yes i did say campgrounds, many people sleep on the boats for the whole summer another consideration if you have a fire in your marina during sleeping hours.
  8. another fine example of why you can't be complacent on these gas calls! a tragic loss for all involved.
  9. as of this writing TL-1 (new seagrave) is in service as ladder co # 2 @ station #1. TL-4 (old mack) is in service at station #3 and is being called ladder #3, Ladder #3 is out of service at station #3 (e-one) confused yet? all 3 were put into service last week during the fires.

  16. an interesting book or really SOG book that i found while working at 60 control in 1983 that was written in the early 40s had the mutual aid plan for all of weschester co. the part that I do remember the most was that alot of it included the civil defense. Departments were to stage in area's around westchester to respond into in the event of a attack on nyc. Adapters for nyc hydrants were issued to all depts in case they had to use a nyc hydrant. Ironically 60+ years later the mutual aid was activated for 911.
